Monster House, yep, I remember this one and, I just thought of something: Why is it that children’s films and tv shows from the 1990s and 2000s decades that opted for CGI as an animation choice, and, knowingly or unknowingly did so because they either did or didn’t anticipate just how far CGI would advance in such a short amount of time that makes what they created look awkward, creepy, unnerving, and uncanny? Can someone please give me an answer for that if any, thank you.

Little fun fact about the movie, not only the animation was motion capture as well, but to have the roars of Constance as a house, they had the voice actress record in a huge barn, so the accoustics would really give the sound they wanted.

Also helps that they make it seem like he’s haunting the house for most of the film. Before they enter the house and see her pictures, the only hints we get that it’s Constance haunting the house is that you can very briefly hear Nebbercracker say “stay away from her!” Just before he has his heart attack and even then it’s cut off so abruptly and done in such a way you could see it as him trailing off and saying “stay away from here”

I remember watching this movie all the time as a kid. This was the only Halloween related film my school had, so we just kept watching it each time the season rolled around. The teacher would sometimes randomly skip to the end and ignore a good half of the film (for example, I remember that we conveniently skipped over a lot of the side characters who got eaten, like the babysitter and cops) and even then we would never finish it, which often led me to be extremely confused as to what was going on. Once, we barely even got 10 minutes into the movie before the teacher just decided to turn it off. Only years later, after catching a rerun of Monster House on Cartoon Network did I ever see the conclusion.

This movie weirdly has one of my favorite lines ever. It's when Nevercracker is about to light to the dynamite and he says "Let this be the right thing to do." That one sentence summarizes everything he's feeling an in such a poetic way. He still loves Constance, but he also knows she needs to be stopped. And the great thing is, this line makes it clear he isn't sure what's the right decision, as anyone in that scenario would be. He can only hope.
@mrcritical6751

That honestly sums up his entire character, he’s stuck in a situation where nobody would know what the right thing to do is

As the other reply said, yeah that sums him up a lot. He hoped he was doing the right thing scaring kids away and being that grumpy ole neighbor for over 45 years; having a whole entire generation of adults hate him for scaring them. He hoped he did the right thing when he finished the house for his wife. And he hoped he was doing the right thing when he freed Constance from the circus that was abusing her (though, granted we can all agree that that *was* the right thing). To when the main story takes place, where he hoped he was doing the right thing when having Constance destroyed.

Very true, and I love that a family-centric/kid-friendly movie has a character like him! Mr. Nebbercracker is a good example of a complex character that can help broaden kids' minds to how the world/humanity isn't often so black-and-white, and how some people aren't just simply good guys vs bad guys - some people are just trying their best with what they can, and being a good person doesn't always mean getting everything right.

A Interesting Fact: In a common practice for pre-production, director Gil Kenan made a list of all the actors he envisioned to play each character in the movie, but prepared no backup actors in case somebody declined their role. Producer Robert Zemeckis advised Kenan to prepare a list of backup actors, but Kenan was sure he could convince everyone in mind to accept their respective roles. Shockingly, every single one of Kenan's first choices accepted their roles, which Zemeckis had never seen happen before in his 40-year filmmaking career.

Per word of Dan Harmon, producer Steven Spielberg and director Gil Kenan made the final product scarier in tone than he had wanted and forced in the scene expanding on Constance's origin and death against his wishes. Considering the film is in fact called Monster House and the backstory is actually very important to the plot, some fans of the film would see their influence as a good thing. Ironically, this was in addition to executive decisions made to make the film less disturbing, such as having all of the house's victims show up alive and well during the credits and rejecting Harmon's original idea to have the house be full of human organs.

I think, first of all, the animation was really well done and spared no expense for the joy on Constance's face and the line delivery in the scene was sweet and subtle so that added a lot, of course. But ultimately, It's the dialogue that does it for me. It isn't that classic line of "I'm getting you out of here!" its instead, "I CAN take you away [...] Would you like that?" Nebercracker doesn't see himself as a hero doing something noble for someone less fortunate, he's treating her like a human and asking for her consent before he takes her away. It really speaks to how much he loved her just at first sight and wanted her happy whether it was with him or not and I really find their romance so sweet because of it.

Monster House is easily one of THE most underrated Halloween movies around! And truth be told, the shadow hand scene is genuinely terrifying to me! When I was 5, I had one hell of a vivid nightmare, a robed stranger dragging me out of bed, dragging me down a hallway to a mural of a large white hand with an eye in the palm, it leaped off the wall crushing my head, literally holding me in it's gaze for god-only-knows how long. I was forced awake by my mum and sister, saying i was screaming for the last 5 minutes, they had to toss me into a shallow-filled bath to snap me out of it. Another Fun Fact: In the original screenplay, DJ and Chowder are harassed by two bullies named Ryan and Cameron who get eaten after DJ purposely lures them to the house as bait. The two characters were removed from the screenplay because the studio thought their death was far too dark, and that the bullies combined with DJ's cruel babysitter, babysitter's boyfriend, and Nebbercracker all made the film seem much more cruel.

This movie had a lot of subtle humour. For instance, DJ asks Chowder where his parents are, and Chowder replies that his mum is at the movies with her personal trainer. It took me ages to get that she was likely having an affair with him.

By far my favorite moments in this movie are things that are left unsaid so you have to pick up on the clues to put together the story yourself. For instance, Nebbercracker comes back in an ambulance. This instantly makes me imagine how, as soon as Nebbercracker woke up, he demanded to be returned home or tried to go home himself only for the hospital to stop him due to medical reasons, so he had to sneak out and steal an ambulance just to get back to his house and save the neighborhood kids. Man, he’s seriously tough.

Another Fun Fact: There is a back story involving Skull (played by Jon Heder) and Bones (played by Jason Lee) being in an amateur heavy metal band. When we first meet Zee (played by Maggie Gyllenhaal), she is wearing a top with "Skull 'n' Bones" written on, and later puts one of their cassette tapes on called "Live! at the Smell". She is also dating Bones in the movie.

Honestly, the fact that the monster is lovable was a novelty to me. I'm not really an amateur of horror in general, so most of the "monsters" I see are despicable, horrible and cruel entities to be run from and/or stopped... But here they genuinely depicted a couple ACTUALLY in love, willing to live and die together no matter what happens, and that turns the entire situation into a beautiful tragedy instead of a "proper" horror story, to me.

There's something else to be said about Constance being deemed a "monster" in life because of her appearance and being exploited for it; but, when she dies and actually becomes the house, it wasn't her appearance that made her monstrous, or her "ugliness" that made her evil, but it was the fact that she was traumatized in life. I actually thought it was more novel the fact that there was an early 2000s movie with a fat woman that didn't make a joke out of her size, they just made it important to why people treated her so horribly in life and why her husband was so protective of his home. The story of Constance and Nebercracker actually always made me cry growing up because of how pure their love was and how innocent Constance really was before her death and transformation, it all really was an unfortunate accident that ended with a poor woman living out the rest of her existence as what society turned her into - a monster.

Uhh, fun fact. When Nebbercracker came out of the ambulance, he exits through the front doors. Strange, right? This implies that he basically escaped from the hospital, stole the ambulance, and drove all the way back to the neighborhood just for the house. It's a detail that's pretty interesting to spot. Anyways, solid review, short, sweet, and to the point.

Mr. Nebbercracker was the hero this entire time. He sacrificed away his entire life to protect others by scaring them away from his house. Yes, he was mean about it, but he had to be, otherwise the house would have hurt people. You can tell he is really a kind soul who looks out for others, yet he never got to really live his life as his life consisted of constantly scaring people away to protect them and having to take on a "mean old man" persona.
