My son just brought up an excellent point: would owl bears cough up owl pellets? If so, that would be an interesting thing for a party to stumble across in the woods...

So I like the thought that went into this idea. BUT. Owls cough pellets because they eat their prey while and can't digest the whole body. (Bones and all that.) Owlbears hunt prey and pick the carcass apart with their beaks more like an eagle would, rather than eating them whole. So, TLDR, no. Owlbears probably wouldn't cough up pellets similar to owls.

Once the owlbear breaks out of the cube using its action, it should still have movement left. So wouldn't it just spend the turn backing up a little bit knowing how slowly this thing creeps along? If the owl bear even moves half it's speed away, then the cube won't be able to immediately re-engulf it which means the owlbear will be able to go back on the offensive. I feel like a predator would instinctively know how fast itself is compared to the thing they're attacking.
@danpgrady

The Gelatinous Cube would still have a potential reaction to make a Pseudopod attack. With initial Engulf damage, start of turn damage, and Attack of Opportunity the Cube will average 41 damage and could potentially kill the Owlbear outright with high rolls in that scenario but not likely. Then again, it wouldn't really be a "VS" if its main goal was running. But if the Owlbear lived, and was in "flight" it would outrun the Cube quickly especially if it dashed. It didn't happen here, but I see a lot of DM's not playing the cube correctly with how it can move. When Engulfing you can "Move up to your speed" essentially giving you 30 ft of movement per turn. A cube can easily engulf an entire adventuring party in one turn if they arent spread far apart. If a DM wants to be especially cruel to the players, you can make a 10x10 vertical shaft trap with a cube at the bottom of it :)
@windspast

@@danpgrady the owlbear wouldn't be running away though. It would be repositioning itself utilizing its own speed. It would totally risk the opportunity attack to get some distance away to stalk its prey before charging in and killing it. The first time it breaks out of the engulf, it should realize it can't stand around just to get immediately engulfed again.

This one was super interesting in that it could go either way! I think the surprise factor is the only way the cube wins though. No surprise there as it's an ambush predator after all.

I think that, in the wild/natural world, once the Owlbear found that once it touches the Gelatinous Cube, its own fur & feathers would start to burn (due to the acidity of the Gelatinous Cube's acid). Knowing this, it would leave it alone & find some easier prey. Assuming that the G/C hasn't consumed the O/B's cub.

Spoiler for the winner Based on outcome 1 The torchbearer stopped to look down at the slimy skeletal remains. “By the Hammer…” one of the party members said as he and the other novice adventurers from the guild looked on in horror. Easton, veteran that he was simply kneeled down to examine the monster’s bones. “Owlbear… looks as though it was ambushed by an ooze, judging the color and thickness, a gelatinous cube. Spat out the bones after consuming everything else…” He was brought out of his train of thought when he saw the novices. Fear and dread overcoming them. “What’s with those faces? You lot said you wanted action right? Come on! We’ve got an ooze to chop up.” “Yes captain!”

If these encounters were somewhat real..... there is nothing an Owlbear could do. Attacking a Gelatinous Cube with an appendage that is affected by acid? Not smart. That would be exactly what it wants you to do. If a Cube could talk, it would say "Please, stick your beak in me. Make this easy and give me your arms too." Its best defense is Its "terrible" AC.

Whatever adventuring party comes through this area after round 2 is gonna consider themselves the luckiest party alive. They get to avoid a cube ambush, and a partially corroded owlbear isn't as much of a threat. It may even choose to leave them alone willingly to give itself time to heal.

An owlbear prowled the halls of a gloomy dungeon, looking for its next meal. That giant rat was particularly tasty, but it still hungered. Suddenly, it felt extreme pain. It was surounded by a slimy, burning substance. It shrieked, flailing desperately at the fowl sludge, but it was no use. The slime suddenly got more acidic, the owlbear screeched with agonizing pain, and tried again and again to escape the grasp of this slime. Alas, it couldn't free itself, and died a miserable death at the sutopod of a jilatinus cube. ... A few coridors, another owlbear's keen, ursine ears picked up the sound of a dying creature. It stalked closer, and its keen mind noticed that the ground was unusually clean. It thought back to a day when it was still a cubling, and a terrifying blob of something attacked its parents. It saw its mother die before its father slew the fowl ooze. It perked up. Sure enough, there was something there, something slimy that had the suspended remains of an owlbear, perhaps the very one that it had heard expire. Primal fear and rage filled the monstrosity, and it lunged, tearing and ripping with savage beak and deadly claw at the offending cube. It finally destroyed the evil thing, and moved on. It picked up the sound of voices, clanking armor and footsteps. There was fresh prey lurking. *gets killed by a group of adventurers*

When you're dealing with bestial creatures, by far the most likely outcome is both creatures surviving. In a realistic scenario an owlbear would run away from any and all oozes, being instinctually afraid of them. But of course, for the entertainment of the masses, they must fight!

If it breaks out and survives the initial Engulf damage, Start of turn damage, and OA damage then yes. but that scenario averages 41 damage. With high rolls or potential crit on Pseudopod (if allowed) the 59 HP Owlbear could potentially go down but not likely... then again it wouldn't really be a VS. if creatures #1 priority was running.

In the wild the two creatures would be mutually beneficial to each other, so I really don't see them fighting. Say the ruin is the OB's lair. The JC comes around once a month to clean out the scraps, bones, owl pellets, excrement, what have you. OB gets a clean lair, JC gets fed. Animal intelligence doesn't equal stupid, at some point Mama tells you if you walk into something and it burns your face off, run! It's why bears aren't killed by wolverines, they back off and let it eat its fill, because the wolverine can't eat a whole dear carcass. It's why you don't see owls attacking crows by day, they know they need a low light advantage. Yall must be city folk.

@@nunya_bizniz Of all the creatures that have ever lost a fight against a dragon it is actually humans who have done so the most. The reason for this being that most of the humans who have lost a fight against a dragon were expecting their opponent to be another human. Until this form of retardation is resolved you could never understand why I with acid could simply go around and wipe out the gelatinous cubes. But hopefully this will never happen. It would put an end to my best pranks.
I might be dumb for asking but... the gelatinous cube couldn't do it's pseudopod attack at the owlbear while it is inside? Cause the trigger for the 6d6 acid damage is at the start of the gelatinous cube's turn, it does nto take up it's action.
