I hope you enjoy this video guys! It was quite hard to get footage of every moment of the fishing due to the higenber of hours that went into the hookup... But I hope you'll enjoy the incredible scenery and find this video nice and relaxing 👌 also hope a few of you find it useful when handling your catch - I know it's hard in the excitement to remember the steps but if you can make a little improve t to your process the fishery will love ya for it. Tight lines & don't stop adventuring 🏞️⛺🔥💯

Haha the clear poly is basically fly line. Perhaps that's overkill. Pretty used to 15-20ft leaders in the south island - the fish are tricky here. Welcome to the channel 🏞️⛺💯

Thanks! hopefully it helps without annoying too many people. The canal is jammed with smaller fish so handling is quite key to ensuring the little ones that get let go can grow up into beasts like these Jacks 💯

Cheers Mike! I was/am a bit worried about being too preachy but looking around the canals a bit of education might help the fishery people I'm sure don't mean to be hard on the fish perhaps they just don't know anything else

The McKenzie country looks great in that calm weather! Unlike summertime with the nor’wester blasting… Great effort on the fish.

Nice vid and fitting reward for the effort! I'm still not convinced about canal fishing, maybe when I'm 90 and can sit on my commode chair all day with Waste Management Services regularly emptying it. That rough track you took around the lake leads to a couple of excellent fishing rivers and high country tarn.

Haha I hear ya. The joy of a back country trip to stalk a fish, then sight fish to it is unsurpassed for us fly fishing nuts 🏞️ If you do hit the canals when you're 90 don't forget your Motorhome, a bag of frozen prawns and a bell on the rod tip 😂

@@nzadventurer won't have a drivers licence by then, will be blind an unable to see the hook to bait it and will be deaf so the bell would be useless...😁

8ft of poly, 10ft of level 8lb, then tippet ring and 6ft of 6lb ... 24ft of leader/tippet (did I hear that right?) seems ... excessive, even in that awesome weather you got. Tough to turn over a two fly rig and keep them out of the tussock. Did you shorten it in the wet conditions?
@nzadventurer
10 күн бұрын
Heya! Yes that's correct. The poly leader is basically fly line tho... Some of the drifts I had the indicator up near the top of the 8lb, say 8ft up, so 14ft from the indicator to the flies.... Presentation probably wasn't what caught me the fish so maybe my turnover was a bit rough or could be I'm used to long leaders from my usual hangout in the back country headwaters. Thx for watching sub for more adventures 🏞️⛺🔥

You out the indication after the polly leader?
@nzadventurer
8 күн бұрын
Poly leader to 8lb nylon as leader, to tippet ring then 6lb fluro tippet. Indicator is on the 8lb but up high to give plenty of length as it's deep.

You were talking about the proper way to take care of the fish, so I hope you kept the first 11 pounder. Otherwise, he was out of the water far too long.
@nzadventurer

Thanks for raising that - it's a fair point and something to be concerned about for sure. The shots holding the first fish up are all photos which I animated to look like video - there is no video footage of the fish out of the water except when I weigh it and that's just a couple of seconds. Cheers
