The Nordic region, in my humble opinion, stands as the epitome of breathtaking beauty. Its vast expanses of rolling hills adorned with endless lush forests and beautiful countryside, each boasting its unique character, whether hilly or flat, evoke a sense of magical. The multitude of lakes and streams in Finland and sweden, alongside Norway's majestic fjords and mountains and Sweden's distinctive mountains, paint a portrait of unparalleled natural splendor. With winters draped in pristine white, teeming with incredible wildlife, and illuminated by the mesmerizing dance of the Northern Lights, the Nordic landscape truly captivates the soul. Everywhere one ventures in the Nordic expanse, beauty unfurls in all its glory, making it undeniably the most exquisite place on Earth.

Hiked there for my first ever hike! Thought I don't remember much between Nikka and Vistas since I walked that ~40km stretch in one day due to being extremely ill prepared for hiking in the mountains :') Had a summer bag when we had -5c nights while sleeping on a thin rollup sleeping pad for 10e :D 8 years later and I have a bit more experience.... Were you genuinely worried about the X-mid? Lovely tent but I've never had it up in faster than 25 m/s wind.
@exposedpaths
11 ай бұрын
That must have been a tough first hike 😂Yes I was really worried about X-mid breaking down. When the wind started peaking to 30 m/s, the corner tensioner locks started loosing and the entire tent started flapping madly. I tightened them once but they became loose again. X-mid is a wonderful tent but those winds are really challenging for any tent (except real basecamp bomber tents). Since you have the same tent you know that all tension centers on the corner pegs, and if they start to slip then everything fails. You could secure the lines with additional knots but still, there's a terrible amount of tension on the corners in hard winds. The designer of the tent (Dan Durston) actually replied to my report on reddit and mentioned that there are occasional reports about the tent holding up in such winds like this, but more typically the reports claim maybe 20-25 m/s as practical limit. I would tend to agree (and even then it's a very restless night).

Really beautiful film. I have skied the Vistas valley from Alesjaure, then through past Nallo to Salka. It is just so stunning this area . I’ve been looking at trekking this too, and your video certainly gives some ideas. It just makes it look so enticing, although I know it is also hard work, particularly if a storm or high winds hit! Thanks for sharing these beautiful memories.

Thanks! I've been in Vistasvagge twice now and it's always beautiful. The best part is from Alesjaure to Vistas stugor, the lower part of the valley is not so nice. But there's forest cover there :D I bet it would be just grand during the winter, with high mountains on both sides.
@billthomson7468

@@exposedpathshi. It was an impressive valley to come through in winter. Although when I did it (2019) there was a lot of ice on the river in the upper valley, and very stony ground either side without full snow cover. So getting through that was quite tricky! But the scenery made up for it. Not quite so much in the lower valley (before Vistasstugan from Alesjaure direction), but I could see this was trees and scrub land. A quick question if you don’t mind. Your video is beautifully made. I particularly liked the few time lapse sections e.g. at 11:03 and 12:35. Do you recall your typical time lapse setting used, the interval timing? It seemed just right for the cloud motions etc. Thanks again.
@exposedpaths
5 күн бұрын
Not quite sure about the time lapse but I think it's maybe 5-10 seconds. Smaller intervals are better, you can always speed the video up later in the editor. I think there's also some motion blur added to make the clouds bit smoother.

Warmth has never been a problem for me, feet generate heat as long as you are moving. Even when it had been snowing wet snow. And for camp, you have dry socks to change into (with plastic bags to slip into your wet shoes, if you do not want to carry separate camp shoes).

Hi, phenomenal video and what an area to hike in! If I could ask one question...what is the skirt like garment you are wearing and why? Surely the high winds make it act like a sail and make walking a struggle.
@exposedpaths
11 ай бұрын
Thanks and I agree, the area is just majestic! The skirt is a rain skirt from northernlite.fi. I find it much more comfortable than rain pants (less sweaty, easier to put on and take off). On this hike I also used it simply as windstopper even when it was not raining because the weather was quite cold. Wind did not grab the skirt itself so much, it just flaps in the wind and wraps around my legs.

Great stuff. When exactly were you there? We may have crossed paths. I went from Abisko to Kaitum village Sep 9-18, partly on foot and partly by packraft (Vistasjohka and Kaitumälven). Was planning to continue onwards to Skaulo, but had to bail due to a freak snowstorm that dumped up to 38 cm of snow onto the area and turned everything into deep winter conditions.
@exposedpaths

Thanks! I started from Nikkaluokta on Sept 2nd and returned there on the 9th so that was before you. I bet Vistasjohka is a nice river to packraft! I heard about the snowstorm, it was the same in Finnish Lapland. (Well, maybe not quite 38 cms of snow.) I was glad to have missed it although weather was kinda challenging also on the first week of September :D
