Normally, a Mohawk, Adirondack & Northern freight train on the railroad's 45-mile Utica-Lyons Falls, NY line will consist of one engine and one to four freight cars all destined for customers in Boonville, 35 miles north of Utica.
However, when the railroad begins storing cars north of Boonville in late winter, cuts of fifty or more cars are not unusual. During such moves, MA&N will often use all its Utica-based engines, Nos. 2042 (the "Atomic Engine," so named because it "starred" in a TV mini-series several years ago), 805 and 2456, Alcos all.
On March 6, 2019, the MA&N brought 70 empty tank cars out of its Utica yard with No. 2042 on the point followed by Nos. 805 and 2456. This was truly a MONSTER TRAIN for what in normal times is a quiet branch line.
We catch the big train passing through the picturesque village of Remsen, NY early on the morning of March 6, 2019. Winter retains its grip here: plenty of snow on the ground, more on the way, and a chilly 7 degrees.
