Regarding that well ghost in stage 2, you're right to think what's being thrown are plates: they are! There is a Japanese ghost story about a woman named Okiku. There are many different tellings, but they usually involve an expensive plate being lost or broken, which causes Okiku some torment and leads to her being killed in a well. It does also seem to be the inspiration for the Sadako story from The Ring, so good catch there, too. I hope this helps make the connections fit for you!

So Shrimp Attack is one of the more "odd" ones to figure out. Some bosses are Japanese lore, some are American horror movies. So is Shrimp Attack, or, "The Fry". The grey ovals on the side are teleporters, referencing "The Fly". But why an onion ring and shrimp tempura? In Japanese, there isn't an L sound, so it's replaced with an R. Thus, the Fly becomes, "The Fry"... Fried tempura, shrimp, and onion rings!

That dead boss in level one that the manual calls a "Giant Spider" is actually based on a weird Japanese model kit called a Torigaran. It's supposed to be some kind of chicken creature cradling a painfully bloated stomach. I learned this from watching UnPlayedAThing do a full playthrough of the final release of Monster Party, followed by a trip through the prototype cartridge while pausing to explain where most of the different enemies, bosses, and level ideas came from.

This game stands out as one of my favorite NES games back when I was a kid, before the Sega Genesis (and later, the TurboGrafx and SNES) came out in full force. Whenever I was bored and didn't feel like playing anything too long (usually an RPG or Adventure game), I'd just pop in Monster Party. It probably helped that even at that young of an age, I was already a horror fanatic in the making as I loved ghost/scary stories and Edgar Allen Poe's works even though they gave me nightmares. :)

Probably one of the weirdest and most interesting idea ever for a video game. The Japanese rom makes the creation of this game more legendary. What happened with Level 7 if I remember correctly was that there was only two bosses in the Japanese rom, but they added the rematch Spider for a third boss in the states, but forgot to take to account getting the key and it created a bug if you fight all three bosses and making the game unwinnable at that point.

Classic NES era game, I think everyone I've talked to knows this game, mostly because it looks super rad on the box and then you get it home and it's super hard. This was also my first time playing a horror video game and the transition on the first stage actually scared the shit out of me and gave me nightmares for a week, no joke. I never beat this game, I've gotten close, but the game is such a pain in the ass. You already got problems like game mechanics that aren't explained and then game rules that suddenly change near the end that have been previously enforced since the beginning. No other stages has you scrolling to the left like the final stage. Not all bosses have to be beat, there's a bug near the end that can softlock you out of beating it. Just a huge mess. Which sucks because otherwise, I really liked this game. There wasn't many horror games on the NES.

@@Johnnydubois I mean clearly the developers had a plan when they made this game, as our kind host has shown us that monsters will continue to give away power ups, bosses, even the ones that appear impossible, all have a pattern that makes them very easy to beat. It's just the process of finding that all out that makes it teeth grindingly difficult.
