Oddly enough, this isn't actually far off from what (supposedly) happened! Story goes, the whole Roman suit was supposed to be a full sci-fi space suit, with a ray gun and all. Apparently, somewhere along the way, the main body of the suit got lost/damaged, meaning it couldn't be used. Knowing they needed to start filming soon, the director (or at least someone working on set) had a spare gorilla costume lying around that hadn't been used in a while, so while they knew it wasn't exactly what they had planned, they decided it was better than nothing! Honestly, if it WAS just an ordinary sci fi space suit, I think this movie would have just been lost to time due to being another generic sci fi movie.
