Iggy is a perfect example of what Monte should've/could've been. If dude was humble and accepting of the new generation of Warriors that were incoming, imagine how a GS team with Monte, iggy, Barnes, Klay, Steph, Livingston and Draymond wouldve been. the vets leading by helping to push the new school to the front and selflessly build the franchise around the new future of Golden State like what iggy and others were doing. They mightve had 6 rings and chasing a 7th right now

THIS. Heck Monta could have possibly been a 6th MOTY coming off the bench. But yeah, Iggy was the vet that Monte should have been. Also I feel Monte played a part a bit in how Steph's persona has been as a vet himself now in recent years. Giving their homegrown rookies like Poole, Kuminga, Wiseman, and Moody chances to grow as well as welcoming in younger guys that came from other teams like Wiggins and GP2. Steph didn't want to treat the younger players like how he was treated by Monta.

Steph's rookie year was my first year of retirement, and I watched almost every Dubs game that year. Ellis also wouldn't slap hands after Steph's free throws, and didn't seem to want to pass Steph the ball, no matter how open. It was kinda conspicuous; since everyone touching hands after a teammates free throw is so standard it seems mandatory. Ellis just wouldn't; and the camera crews started cutting away to something else so as not to show the conspicuous omission. But once it became clear they were cutting away every time (you'd see the guys in the lane bump fists or slap hand then cut away before you could notice whether Ellis had or not, which I noticed specifically becuz I was watching to see if Ellis ever did) that in itself became conspicuous. Steph showed how team oriented he was by, after this had gone on for months, getting out of the way of the offensive action. He spent a lot of time hanging in corners when Ellis was dominating the ball, so as not to get in the way of what the others did. This video doesn't mention what I felt was a key aspect of how that came about. During the We Believe year, when Monte was a rookie, Baron Davis was The Man. There was an attitude at that time, you'd hear it over and over and over from journalists, announcers and players, that at crunch time you ride your Go To Guy. Possession after possession thru the final minutes. When the Dubs beat the Mavs that year, Baron Davis was that guy, but Monte made his contributions with key baskets. In the second round Ellis was clearly gaining confidence and in one game he had a particularly strong finish that took over the game when Davis wasn't hitting his shots that 4th Q. I really felt they might have won that second series if they'd rode Ellis's hot hand more, but later in the series in the Win Or Go Home games they reverted to that Go To The Man mentality and they paid the price. There was a key game where Ellis clearly had a hot hand but they rode Davis anyway in final minutes and it cost them the game. I'd point out here that MJ didn't start winning titles until he learned to make use of Paxton and then Kerr's outside range for game winning shots after MJ had taken it to the D so many times and ways that they were double and triple teaming him when it came to the last minute of the game. By Steph's rookie year, Monte Ellis was that Go To Guy, doing what Baron Davis had done to him, which everybody treated as The Way It Is. Personally I hated it because teams that work together to get open shots are a lot more fun to watch, and Steph's court vision had made me a fan of his during his NCAA tourney run. So I was watching all that becuz I was focused on Steph Curry right from the start of year 1. When I heard about the Monte Ellis trade I was jumping for joy. No dislike or disrespect for Monte Ellis. But I thought then and still think it is the best trade the Dubs have made since the '70s, and I say since the '70s only becuz I don't remember the trades they made in the '60s w/ greats like Wilt and Nate Thurmond. As I saw it we traded Monte Ellis for Andrew Bogut, Klay Thompson, and Steph Curry; even tho' Klay and Steph were already on our roster. Then there was that painful scene at the ceremony to retire Chris Mullin's # when 19,000 season ticket holders wouldn't stop booing Joe Lacob. I've often wondered how many appreciative apology letters Joe Lacob has received from Dubs season ticket holders who were booing him that night. This ownership team is the best we've had since the Franklin Meuli days, by far. And I'm just as glad that that Go To Guy has to take every shot at crunch time concept is mostly in our collective rear view mirror. While agreeing with what seems to be a consensus among hired wise pro talking heads re: the 5 man race of deserving MVP candidates; there's part of me wants to argue that this year's MVP race is a runaway, with the Dubs front office group having lapped the field just by putting this roster together. What a great collection of skill sets, attitudes, energy and synergy. And Nellie must be having more fun just watching this offense than he ever had coaching. Just one man's mouthy opinion; but there it is.

Monta would have been a great fit off the bench when the Warriors got to championship level. Could have been Lou Williams for the Warriors and a 6th man of the year. Of course he wouldn't have gone for it, but imagine a talent like his on the 2015 Warriors bench and his only role would be to come in for Steph and get buckets. If he would have commited to that, dude would be a great help on the bench in 2016 when Klay and Steph were stuggling in those last 4 games. In 2016 the Warriors were counting on Draymond to score in the Finals, and Monta could have took the pressure of all of them especially when Dray got suspended. I know he wanted to be a star, but he might have been remember more fondly if he took that back seat to Steph. Andre Igudala got him a Finals MVP by shallowing his pride and hitting the bench.

Dude was quick , would run the pick n roll to death and get off quick mid range shots over and over again or take it to the rim and reverse, or up and under layup your center to death. Wasn't saying Klay was small. Was saying Monta and Davis were. He got to see that and didn't think it would work with an even smaller Steph(muscle) getting Klay was perfect because Klay was bigger and defensive. The shooting guard they needed. Sadly Monta wasn't the point guard or player to put with him

I always knew Curry was going to be the GOAT. I watched him since HS. I hated Monta because he was just trying to hold the future of the NBA back. My father is a season ticket holder, and he took me or my brother to every game. And every home game I went to , I was the one with the 'TRADE MONTA' sign. That's me in the crowd. And the front office finally listened to me and then we went on to win multiple titles. I knew it. Yay me.

When the Warriors traded Ellis, I said to myself they’re building from the ground up. Davis, Capt. Jack, Richardson was also gone. I had a very good time watching them at Oracle. But when those guys left and Curry was introduced it made me a little sad. Made me think that it’s the owner’s team, he can do whatever he wants. But then they hired Jerry West and Mark Jackson. Made me think ‘ there might be something going on here’.

Idk about that Mark Jackson shot. I don’t think anyone could definitively say his way wasn’t going to work. He got fired for personal reasons between him and the front office after back to back years of highest win totals in like 40 years or something. Coming off of a wcf. They even believed in him because they gave him like a 4yr extension that year, but the relationship deteriorated.
@carteljameson8395

The problem with Jackson is that his offensive sets were medieval. He was never going to get the most out of Steph and Klay's offensive abilities. The potential part of their game that he didn't take advantage of was the spacing they'd give to the entire team. Kerr understood this immediately and created an offensive system that would utilize them properly. Jackson was crucial in giving the Warriors a defensive identity, but their offense was going to hold them back from being truly great.

Monta was phenomenal before the 3 ball era. during his GS days the only drawback was how undersized he was for a SG, so he absolutely did need a bigger guard to play with. Steph at the time was the consensus pick regardless of need. Monta was 100% right that they wouldnt work as a pairing. I have yet to see a situation where having two small guards works out defensively. Monta's time in Dallas was pretty good and too bad it ended so soon, but Milwaukee before and Indiana after were terrible fits for his skills. the other thing that I suspect limited him was he didnt seem to put in the work to improve his outside shot and I think his workout regiment and diet may have been lacking. he seemed to rely upon his incredible natural gift of speed and finishing at the rim until that started to wane.

I did like Monte from the we believe era, however I saw what Steph did at Davidson and paid attention to the draft to see who would pick him. Steph was not an ordinary player. When a player plays with such audaciousness, you root for them because you can tell he would change the game, plus he was an underdog and people thought he was a novelty being the son of a great shooter. I knew Steph would be great if given the right opportunity and coach. If you played bball at any level you could see the animosity Ellis showed Curry on the court. I was happy when gsw gave the keys to Steph so that he could be unleashed to the world. There is a saying - Your attitude determines your attitude, and Ellis didn't have the right attitude when Steph was drafted.

Monta was a beast, I didn't know he was only 31 when he left the NBA that's surprising. I don't remember no serious injury happening but once he left Golden State it seemed like he just became less and less relevant. Actually I remember Milwaukee too when him and Jennings were scoring a bunch together so I'd say after Milwaukee he really became less relevant then in Dallas is where his productivity started going down gradually. Definitely an incredible scorer, at least Golden State retired his jersey for keeping them decent for years. He definitely should've got a couple all star teams too but there was a ton of nasty shooting guards then so it was tough.

TBH, his time with the Mavs should be highlighted a little more. He was doing very well until Rondo was brought in. Obviously being paired with another ball dominant guard isn't always the solution, at least during those years. But Monta was a breath of fresh air for the Mavs post Championship with a declining Dirk. I hated Monta with the Warriors but I loved him as a Mav. I watched Steph in High School and at Davidson and loved his game. But I thought he might not be athletic enough to really excel on the NBA level.
