You describe "Parable of the Sower" in a way that makes me add it to my TBR. I've never read Octavia Butler, but I know how influential she is and I think finally getting to her work will bring a lot of food for thought.

Beautiful Wrap Up Elliot - I just love watching your Videos. I started to read Parable Of The Sower and at the time I was reading it I just could not get into it but since you have read it and explain how the book is I am going to re-read this one and I will have my own copy of this too. I was reading the Library Copy of it and that might have had something to do with it since I was trying to get the book done in a timely fashion. Castles In Their Bones sounds really good and of course The Fifth Season and the first book you mention - these all sound good. I have these written down. Take Care & Happy Reading ❤️🤗🔰📚📖❤️

I think a lot of world building answers are reveal in the last book for Broken Earth. I personally didn't feel like I had too many questions after that so hopefully you feel the same! I really liked Sorrowland but my brain also put it more into the sci-fi/horror genre as a read it so I don't think I was as jarred by the contemporary setting. One of my favorite things about that one is that its genre is so hard to pin down but that also makes it hard to recommend lol

I was curious about the Girl who fell beneath the sea so thank you for this short review. I think I will be picking it up at some point this spring :) I’m also hoping to get to parable of the sower this month. After reading Kindred I was blown away by Butler’s writing. I just have too many books already reading so I have to wait haha I’m glad you gave the fifth season a second chance. You seem to have the same opinion about it to me! I wished it was a bit longer, or idk at the end it felt like the story got cut a bit abruptly. The third book is my favorite in the trilogy, I think it truly brings everything together and makes the journey worth it.

I thought this was an early March wrap up but it’s actually a late February. 🤣 A couple of these are on my tbr. I read The Broken Earth Trilogy last year. I totally understand lol. I truly thought it was brilliant, but it’s also not what I would consistently reach for. I read it for live shows on Beautifully Bookish Bethany’s channel and that really helped my enjoyment to be able to discuss each book in depth after we read it. Plus half of us were reading it for the first time and half of us were on rereads, and I think that also really helped. 🥰🥰🥰

This was a great wrap up Elliot- I need to go back to Justice of kings soon as I did attempt to read it a while ago and just didn't gel at the time. I just finished reading The Girl who fell beneath the sea and it was a good read but I do agree with you that we should have gotten more in the story.

I loved Parable of the Sower, but in the same way as you, as in it's obviously horrific and depressing but it's so good and beautifully written and interesting. I also read the sequel and then I bought those gorgeous editions (although I wish the art wasn't so covered up on the dust jackets...) I don't like reading sad books because they make me happier about my life; I just think it's important to try to read some painful experiences because it helps us to be more empathetic.

Justice of Kings, Parable of The Sower, Trailblazer, all these books highly appeal to me, I'm so glad you reviewed them! I was also attracted to The Fifth Season, but I've been unsure ever since I've heard about polygamous relationships in the books. I can't wait to listen to your husband's thoughts as I'm also a very theme-oriented reader! 👏

Hey Elliot, thanks for another video. I love your reviews! I feel like you give amazing constructive criticism and also talk about the books you've read in an 'objective' way, but also threading in your own lovely opinions into the review. I find that a lot of the booktubers I watch on KZitem don't give that kind of 'power' to the audience as much as you? Haha, like, 'oh this didn't work for me because x, y, z, but I can see why someone would like this because of a, b, c ' instead of 'Oh I hated this book because the characters are dumb' something like that hehe. The way you talked about Sorrowland makes me want to read it asap sounds like a sad but insightful and beautiful read :) I was wondering if you heard about The Starless Crown by James Rollins? It was released earlier this year by Tor and I haven't seen many booktubers talk about it. I'm reading it now and it's really good! It's a fantasy book that takes place on a tidally locked planet with a cast of characters. I'd in be interested to hear what you think about it! Can't wait for your March wrapup 🥰

The Earthseed duology is... not at all fantasy? Has it ever been marketed as such? I've always seen it classed as sci-fi dystopian (with the SF elements pretty much limited to what you mentioned), which it very obviously is? Octavia E. Butler was definitely principally a sci-fi author, not a fantasy one. But in any case it's great you "enjoyed" the first book so much, that duology is defo my favourite dystopian after The Handmaid's Tale.

Now… I REALLY didn’t like The Fifth Season. At all. It was the main character. I hated her. And the fact that it was partially written in 2nd person made it feel like I was responsible for all the horrible things that woman did. It made me sick. Then I read the synopsis of the next book, and that was enough to make me decide the series isn’t right for me. And now that I think about it, the odds of me picking up another N. K. Jemison book are astronomically low.

I’m hoping to try other works of hers to see how they compare, but I get having a hard time connecting to the Fifth Season-the characters are definitely not heroes!
