On the last day of my senior year of high school, I intentionally showed up late to the last class before I graduated knowing that I could easily troll the teacher there. Doing Cleese's walk, I entered the room and delivered the line "Sorry to have kept you waiting..." in my best Cleese voice. The teacher yells "Meyer, is that some kind of Monty Python crap? I hate those guys!" I have no regrets.

What I think gets lost over the years is the brilliance of seeing this for the first time. The way it's introduced, with Cleese entering another sketch and you think he's just a throw away random character and the Eric Idle pharmacy sketch will continue. But then Cleese turns around with this insane walking stance and for a good 30 seconds you have no clue what the fuck is happening but you're dying laughing.

The secret to Cleese's extraordinarily silly walk was not only in the length of his legs but also his skills as a footballer. He played for his university team and was still playing in a Sunday amateur league while doing Monty Python, and that gave him a great deal of dexterity in the legs and feet.

People complain about 2:12 not being able to hear Cleese's dialogue while the live audience is laughing, but the whole point of that gag isn't what he's saying, it's that he's saying business stuff that isn't important while doing a silly walk. It's funny because he can keep composure while being so ridiculous. Geez people it's supposed to be silly, stop complaining about petty dialogue.

Yeah, you can note earlier that he deliberately pauses the "my walk has become rather sillier lately" line midway through to make sure the live audience isn't drowning it out, because it's an important part of the bit. So if he doesn't pause, you can be pretty sure the important part of that part of the bit isn't the dialogue.

It's the contrast between the silliness of Cleese's walk and the seriousness of the characters and script. Same way the Little Britain sketches with Sebastian and the PM were good, with David Walliams being silly and Anthony head playing the PM dead straight. Only in this sketch Cleese manages to do both himself. His physical movement is brilliant, look at the way he sits down and puts his feet up as he comes in, and sits down again after doing the 'C' shape thing.

I’m not sure it was specifically trying to make a point about the British government being wasteful. You need to accept certain limits of technology if you want to watch a tv program that's older than you are. This was the best audio they had at the time. None of us could have done better.

CapnTates No, they couldn't. It wasn't calibrated for today's machines. This was meant to play on a type of tv you have probably never watched. It sounded different in the UK living rooms of the time. Not only was this not made for you, it wasn't, by a fucking long shot, made for your device.
