I had beautiful elkhound as a child. Her name was Bow. As most little boys are, I always enjoyed exploring in the woods and my parents never had to worry about me. I was about four years old and it didn't matter where I went, Bow was always there. I remember many times we shared but the times that stand out most of all are the times that I came outside and called for her. It didn't matter where Bow was, as soon as she heard my voice, she always came and eager to go on any adventures I chose. Despite what people say about their hunting skills, although they are in fact excellent hunters, I also had two ducks and Bow never bothered them. She was very protective. It didn't matter if it was either parent, if they showed any kind of aggressive actions towards me, like whip my backside when I deserved it, it was never done in front of Bow. My mom called out for me, and although she knew I was ok, I was hard headed and didn't respond or come home when I was supposed to so she greeted Bow and I on the front porch. I knew I had it coming but Bow had different plans. Bow began to walk very small circles around me and always kept her eyes on my mom. Being the mischievous little boy that I was, I thought it was funny and remember laughing at mom, and although she ended up laughing with me, Bow made sure that she kept a safe distance between me and mom. I recall times that I would be out playing, Bow repeated the same protection mode by walking circles around me and unless I told her that It was okay, nobody was going to come close enough to cause me any danger. I'm now 47, and I've had to have many surgeries from a major car accident, a Veteran, and when things aren't going well, I can close my eyes, and drift off to those days again and I still dream about her. I'd give anything to have Bow back. Although it wouldn't be Bow, I'd love to have another Silver and Grey Elkhound. I live in Virginia and I would love to hear from anyone that sells them. It's really ironic but today has been one of those days, just sharing my story has helped me. These are absolutely amazing family members. I'm very interested in adding to my family. Thank you for reading my story, and God Bless.

- THANK-YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE Mr. Randall ! ...Wonderful story & thank-you for sharing it. - My friend & I rescued a so-called 'Finnish Spitz' when she was approx 5 yrs old. She had been neglected & confiscated, but we don't think she was physically abused as she has few phobias. DNA testing has shown that she is #1 Norwegian Elkhound. #2 German Cattle Dog. #3 Chinese Sharpei. #4 Labrador. She is a prissy thing & has all of the coloring patterns of a the Elkhound but she is brown & blackish. We love how sensitive & observant she is. LOVE to watch her walk & trot & run....Not kidding, it's all ADORABLE! (She is now approx 10 yrs old) - We wish you well & hope you are finding positive & affirming experiences!

I got mine from a kennel in Rutledge, Georgia. The breeder is devoted to producing dogs of sound health and temperament. They are the best canine companions one could wish for. Elkhounds are the best-kept secret of all the family dog breeds. Also, have you looked into a rescue? Good luck in finding your canine friend.

Thank you for sharing your story. My big boy, Baldurdash, just came in to check on me. He's a fifty-pound silver, grey, and black with a happy disposition, and he loves everybody. I also have his great-grandmother, who kept my mother company during her final illness. No other breed is more in tune with their people than the elkhound. Have you looked into breed rescue?

Hopefully most of the pain has subsided by now. I just found your channel because I was looking up elkhounds after watching a short by mulvaney on Odin approving their creation (pure comedy, not real) anyway I didn't know about the breed previously. Beautiful with abounding personality is how I would now describe them. I hope this note finds you well and happy today

Our moose dog loved our 3 kids so much. We could hear her vocalizing to the kids where ever they went, which was an extra safety factor. We never discouraged it because it filled our home with happiness. We would go for long walks in the woods and we always knew where each kid was because we could hear Sasha barking at them. She loved doing the thing in the woods so much. My middle child passed away from cancer 2 years ago. I pray that God has her running around in a forest with her dog having a great time. We had 2 girls and they often were put in the bathtub together. It was not uncommon to hear a commotion only to find Sasha had climbed into the tub with girls. She loved when the girls had bubble bath, you could hear her happy bark.

My childhood dog, Gunner (pronounced the German way) died over 15 years ago. He was such a treasure- he loved being with us kids and always being a part of the action. I couldn't have asked for a better dog to grow up with. Anytime I see an elkhound (which is rare) I think of him and mourn him a little. I hope your little elkies are off playing with mine somewhere- telling stories and leaving giant grey clumps of fur everywhere. Thanks for the video. Brought back happy memories.

Your Norwegian elkhound reminds me of the one my family had when I was a teen. Very VERY protective she was. She was such an amazing loving dog. But she was taken away too soon. She was only 5 years old when she passed. Such a beautiful, tentative, loving, loyal and protective dog. But, she was such a hand full when we first got her as a puppy. WOW she always would bite at the back of your heels. Not fun trying to train them to not do that. I am sorry for the loss of your N.E.H Monty.

Mt Elkie, Wiggy, just turned 18 this year. She is losing her eyesight and slowing down but still loves to take point when we walk in the woods here in the mountains. She has helped me raise 3 special needs kids, never once ever growled or bared her teeth or snapped, no matter how many toddlers crawled over her and tugged on her ears...an absolutely perfect family companion and she is regarded as family every bit as much as the humans...she has been around so long when people send Christmas cards and such they are always addressed to Wiggy as well as us....I cannot imagine life without her....complete love and dedication.

We discovered Elkhounds about 10 years ago. We lost our first, Thor, to cancer last summer. Thor didn't talk much, but was much beloved by us and all our orchard custormers. We got his companion, Freyja, about 4 months before Thor went to Asgard. She tells stories like your Monte. We are currently babysitting Freyja's younger brother, Balder, while my sister is on vacation in Fla. If it's not an Elkhound, its just a dog!

There is no silence like not hearing that click of claws on the floor. Hope you get to see the "arfspring" on visits to your parents. Actually, our new arrival, an almost-8-year-old retired show champion, has adapted well to city life over the past month after spending most of her life in a rural community. She talks to the neighbors' dogs whenever she hears them, whether they are outside or not. Best wishes to you, your parents, and the canine contingent!

You will not find a more faithful reliable babysitter for your children, I promise you. We got Shasha as a pup from the breeder and she was the best dog in my whole life of owning dogs. We had 3 kids and the dog slept with each part of the night and with our youngest the 2 of them often slept throat to throat, now that is love. If the kids were digging a snow tunnel the dog dug along with them. When she was 8 she got cancer. Now she comes to me in my dreams but it is OK because she talks to me..

So sad for you! We lost Moose to kidney failure in early May at age 14. Go ahead and get another elkhound. There are some great breeders out there, and the John Nelson Moosedog Rescue group would also be happy to see about hooking you up. It won't be Max; don't expect that of the next dog, but once you get to know him (or her), the new dog will fit right into that empty space in your heart! Good luck!

They are the most versatile breed of dog. From the comments of their people, it looks like they have more breed-loyalty than most other breeds. When I take Moose out, she always gets remarks about her beauty and people ask if she's a husky or a malamute. I could almost let them think that, as I don't want to see them go the way of dalmatians or Saint Bernards or whatever the pop culture breed of the week is. I always set them straight, though. Scratch your arfsprings' ears for me!

@njneopatriot Sort of hard to tell; according to the genetic evidence, the breed is not as old as previously thought, but then, what is genetic evidence when compared to skeletons dating to the last ice age? Actually, the scientific name for the domestic dog is Canis lupis familiaris, classifying all dogs as a subspecies of wolf. They are the result of a lot of selective breeding. I'm prejudiced, but elghunds are the best!

He has the build of a husky, but the color and behavior of an Elkhound :D He is missing the curly-cue tail (opted for the husky variety), and his coat is not a "poufy" as an elkhound. He has a medium build (about 40-45 lbs right now @ 10 months). I wish I could post a picture, he's such a lover :) People around town here get a little apprehensive when I walk him--they're all like, "Omg! Is that a WOLF DOG! Omg! Does he BITE?!?" LOL! Right. He will lick you to death before he bites.

@pLuMLoCo04 I brush my Moose out and carry a bag of the fur with me when I'm vacuum shopping. I've found that some of the cheaper models work better than the expensive ones. If it wasn't for Elkhounds shedding, there'd be a lot fewer birds with such cozy nests! I used to brush out my Elkhound in the spring (repeatedly....day after day after day) and watch birds come and get the piles of his soft winter fur to take back to their nests. They certainly shed, but are such beautiful dogs.
