Shawn, you are exactly correct on the song meaning. Justin wrote the song after the breakup. The nights in white satin are a reference to the sheets she gave him just before she left him. So, while the title name fits into the overall album theme about a day in a person's life, you nailed the meaning.

Breathe deep the gathering gloom Watch lights fade from every room Bedsitter people look back and lament Another day's useless energy spent Impassioned lovers wrestle as one; Lonely man cries for love and has none; New mother picks up and suckles her son; Senior citizens wish they were young Cold-hearted orb that rules the night Removes the colours from our sight Red is grey is yellow white But we decide which is right And which is an illusion

Great reaction, great choice of music! You need to hear the first symphonic rock albums all at one reaction per album, but you could play them back as strings of multiple reactions: "Tommy" and "Quadrophenia" by the Who, "Days of Future Passed" (which contains this song at the end, called "Night") by the Moody Blues, and Yes' "Close to the Edge". All are _incredibly_ good albums, great songs fill every one. The Pearl Jam song you mentioned sounds (from your description, I haven't heard it yet) so similar to the groundbreaking "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones.

Black is my favorite Pearl Jam song. I was lucky enough to see them do it right after that album came out when they came to my hometown and played an outdoor show and it was crazy. It was so good. But I love that song so much. I love that you made a connection between that and this. But you should also check out some live footage of them from back when they were young and also their Studio tracks are fantastic. I almost think you may have already done this one, but, I'm just a singer in a rock and roll band, that's a real banger by them. Definitely check out the studio version though.

I actually like this version better than the original. The original album is with the orchestra (i1967), but the recording of the orchestra always - to me - sounds very compressed. Here, the recording of the orchestra is SO good. Justin, of course, nails this. I saw them a few times live (once it was front row center) and you can see how good these are.

Seriously, now. Do yourself a favor. Not for the channel, just for yourself. Choose a 45 minute time to listen to music, maybe while on a medium length car trip, or while doing some light housework, or can just sit and listen, and listen to the entire Moody Blues album called Days of Future Past -which does include the classical instruments, so you can hear it all in context. To avoid confusion: on the album, this song is just called The Night, and it's the second-to-last track on the album, leading into the last bit which is spoken word. This album is often considered to be the first of the "concept" albums and a precursor to progressive rock.

An orchestra is a type of musical ensemble consisting of about 30-100 musicians and the sections of instruments: strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. A symphony is a type of musical composition. Although the term has had many meanings from its origins in the ancient Greek era, by the late 18th century the word had taken on the meaning common today: a work usually consisting of multiple distinct sections or movements, often four, with the first movement in sonata form. Symphonies are almost always scored for an orchestra consisting of a string section (violin, viola, cello, and double bass), brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments which altogether number about 30 to 100 musicians. Symphonies are notated in a musical score, which contains all the instrument parts. Orchestral musicians play from parts which contain just the notated music for their own instrument. Some symphonies also contain vocal parts (e.g., Beethoven's Ninth Symphony). ( symphony examples: Wikipedia, a free web site and app from a non profit organization)

A very good live version, but the album version is better, with great orchestration and the "Late Lament" at the end, which is classic. However, you MUST look for the version that includes "Late Lament" in the title OR look for the album title called "The Night," which is the official title for the entire track. The orchestra is wonderful, the band is fantastic, and the Late Lament is so memorable that you will want to memorize it. There's an old saying about this incredible song, "If you haven't heard the gong, you haven't heard the song." It's true. ❤✌

It's the closing track of Days of future past, though on the album a short poem about the moon is dropped on the end.. when the single was released, it had the orchestral end curtailed. The single has been released a few times. I think it reached its best position in 1972. They don't do a bad job of the live sound, though obviously the studio recording is a bit smoother and rounded. I've never given the lyrics much thought, just get swept away by the music. Can we have some more Moodies please.

Band member Justin Hayward wrote and composed the song at age 19 while touring in Belgium and titled the song after a girlfriend gave him a gift of satin bedsheets. They broke up. The song itself was a tale of a yearning love from afar, which leads many aficionados to term it as a tale of unrequited love endured by Hayward.

My first big date was in 1967. I took her to see Moody Blues at The Filmore East Greenwich Village, NYC. We hopped on a subway from Bensonhurst to Manhattan. I had about two bucks in my pocket but I remember that incredible spring night. The Band was an hour late and the audience waited patiently for the five man band who turned out was having issues with the Mellotron, a keyboard that fired up audio tape to simulate an orchestra. I remember that experience today, and until my last breath.

I didn't know the difference either, so I looked it up! What is the difference between a symphony and an orchestra A symphony is an orchestra's large-scale musical composition, usually requiring 50-80 instruments. SYMPHONIES REFER TO THE MUSIC, NOT THE MUSICIANS PERFORMING IT, and similar to stage plays, they may have several movements or acts of, often complex, elaborate classical music.
