My DFAM is a SUPERSTAR This bundle is so smart. It feels like it can be for total beginners (Bleep Bloopers), musicians/songwriters looking to expand their colors, and even Eurorack Wizards who want something small and deadly! It's practically adorable in size, YET the infinite combination of Sounds and more importantly, GROOVES (2 sequencers!) is IMPRESSIVE! My Subsequent 25 will have the Black Grandmother join us before the Summer ends, so I'm deeply in the MOOG family, and am not ashamed to consider myself to be in the ASPIRATIONAL Artist category. As a Graphic Artist, I LOVE the superfluous stuff... the Packaging, the Font/Coloring, and all the ATMOSPHERICS. U nailed it. I appreciate the thought and detail work.... the BUILD Quality. (when u put that first patch cable in, your body reacted to how SOLID it was, "Nothing moved!") It just feels like an Instrument. I will MOST DEF transition my beloved DFAM into my Eurorack Phase Two (It looks gorgeous on Modular Grid... Phase One begins this Summer... can't wait!) Love this channel!

These kits are a great idea - I paired a DFAM with a Subharmonicon right from the start, and now have a full tower including a Eurorack bay... Mother32 just arrived! They're fantastic semi modular synths - fair warning though you will want some Eurorack utilities to really make the most of them - not NEED, but WANT. Pamela's New Workout is such an amazing addition on its own - once you can clock everything at different divisions some really interesting options open up.

Interesting idea! As a newbie, how would one go about adding a Pamela's New Workout module to this setup? I have seen it used to great effect in generative, easy listening synthesiser music with other modules such as Qu-bit - Nautilus, Make noise Music - Morphagene etc. How does one understand how to add the clock of PAM to this setup? Many thanks.

The Moog experience already starts with the unboxing. It's just Moogtastic ! I've been opening and closing the cardboard box of my Werkstatt-01 a few times before taking all parts out of there. And yes - the Werkstatt was exactly what I was looking for (a starting point to decide how to build my own modular synthesizer) but it's tempting not to throw some money on the Moog sound studio. It's not just the combination of the DFAM with the Mother-32 but it's the whole Moog experience.

Great review / unboxing. One thing I found I was thinking after your summarizing is the overall build quality of the Moog units. Components, circuit board design, cases and overall sound, has to be worth a little more than the Sometimes questionable copies / alternatives. These units will be sold on as vintage gear in 10,15 or 20 years time where some of the others I doubt will even still be working. Cheers. Steve.

Hello Robin, fantastic review/unboxing, as usual very entertaining and informative. Thank you. I am very interested in your little chat at the end of the vid re who these things are aimed at. The bundle has everything one would need to get started and has the Moog name attached so if you are a beginner, you sort of know that you are relatively safe buying that brand and perhaps that's worth that bit extra cash for security. After months and months of research about a 18 months ago (I come from a guitar playing background) and educating my self to the point of making a simple drone box, with help from Look Mum no Computer, I purchased the DFAM. Based on that philosophy. I knew that Moog weren't the cheapest synths around but, despite my research, I went with Moog, seeing them as a safe bet. Once I purchased the DFAM the research and learning started to fall into place. It was the hands on experience that allowed my knowledge to grow. I was blown away with the DFAM and immediately became hooked on its unbelievable range of sounds and the rabbit holes of creativity it opened up for me. I have found it to be the most expressive instrument that I have so far encountered. I then went on to purchase the M32, Digitakt and a Werkstatt. Out of that bunch the only one that I vaguely regret is the M32, I just can't gel with it even coupled to the DFAM. I'm now considering selling the M32 and going for the DFAM, Subharmonicon bundle leaving me with two DFAMs and the Sub/H. The posters etc that come with the bundle remind me of buying vinyl back in the day, Dark Side of the Moon for example, coming with stickers, poster and postcards as you inferred, all part of the product image that makes one feel part of something. I would recommend the DFAM to anyone, it is so much more than a drum machine offering the east and west coast synth experience. Again thank you for the excellent video.

I haven't bought any of these, but I've been looking at them (for now, I have a Mavis). As of July 2022, the synths are priced separately at $699 each-so if you purchased separately, they'd be $1398 (plus tax) for the two, or $2097 for the Mother/DFAM/Subharmonicon trio. The two-tier rack is $59, the three-tier rack is $79, and there's a four-tier rack available for $99. Meanwhile the two-synth Sound Studios are $1399, and the three-synth Sound Studio is $1999. So the bundles do actually give you a bit of a break on price, since they include the summing mixer and rack kit. Yes, the Moog synths are a bit spendy, but then a lot of the artisan synths cost considerably more.

US pricing warning: If you get a fairly minty set of these (box, instructions, cables etc) you can get each for $500-$550 used (what a beginner should actually do,) and a rack for $60. So about $1060-1160 for a set sold at $1400, making the extras you cant get elsewhere $240-340. Incidentally, this is exactly what I am currently doing. For what its worth with the pricing of these Moogs; yeah Subharmonicon and DFAM have no competition, but they will because I think the M32 was in a similar position when it first came out, and now it takes up way too much HP for anyone to include it on their Eurorack for it's functions. Aside from obvious branding as value, they cost more because Moog innovates, a lot of others react. And your choices in synth purchases seem limited to 3 types of choices: American made heartland tonka tough expensive Anarcho-cyber-communist open source DIY Starvation wage community existing just to put together Behringer products it's up to you to build your personal brand off these choices I guess

Good Job Moog, you could hardly find any better to demo this bundle. -Mother was my intro eurorack. At some point I expected to sell it as I bought more and more modules. But this is not how it works, because as I get more modules I always find a use for that extra lfo, envelope, mult, mixer, noise etc. The sequencer and I are not good friends though, but as they say, "one does not simply" sell ones mum. -That cable holder is actually a shelf for a delay and a reverb pedal. -When I become dictator all eurorack manufacturers must include cardboard foldable thingies/friends for messing up people's clean studios. -I first thought that game was a joke but this seems like fun. Could be used in a live setting and bring in people from the audience to throw the dices. : ) -Yes to a three moog bundle. I would have liked one with two mothers and a defam. -Yes not cheap but compared to yourorack it's not really that expensive either, and in this rack it's actually a rather cheap controller for a small spaceship. -Double + good is that you now got a cat. Hey Robin - Love your reviews and this is the best I've seen of this bundle. Thought you were getting a bit carried away by the Moog marketing machine towards the end :-) - aspirational! - but you did come back down to earth. Moog is certainly a premium brand and you buy into it like phone users buy Apple. In other words, in my own opinion only, it is slightly over-priced. I have a Grandmother and a DFAM and love them both , having said that, I do like Moog gear. With my cynical hat on, it looks like they have too many DFAMs and are trying to move them. why not a Mother 32/Subharmonicon bundle? (I had a Subharmonicon but was, alas, disappointed and sent it back.) Did you not, in an earlier video suggest that you might be getting rid of your Mother 32? Anyway, it's an 'interesting' bundle but forr the price there are many, many alternative propositions. Keep up the great videos and reviews.

Would you recommend the DFAM and mother combination or the DFAM and Subharmonicon combo?

Some help, please. The Barrel-to-Barrel Power Distribution Cables that go from the mixer to the synthesizer. Mine came with a dead cable. Does anybody know the specs to look for when finding a replacement?

You just need to measure the inside of the barrel and google for one the same size

I bought the Moog Sound Studio and I use the summing mixer to connect to my audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett 2i4), and from there I have the audio interface connected to my PC and my KRK Rokit 5’s respectively, but for some reason, I’m only getting sound from one of the speakers. Can you please advise if I need to add a mixer to this device chain(?)

Are you only plugging into 1 channel on the Scarlett? If so then in the software app make it a single channel panned to the middle.

@@MoltenMusicTech Hi, Thanks for getting back to me. - Yes, I am only connecting to one In port on the front of the Scarlett. - I have gone into Ableton and tried the 1, 2, and 1/2 channel options respectively, but none of them results in sound coming out of the ‘quiet’ monitor. - I have tried disconnecting from the left side In port on the front of the Scarlett, and connecting into the other In port, and then the sound transfers across to the other speaker that was previously quiet. - Weird. - I don’t understand this stuff. - It’s frustrating, because I just want to get started creating chaos noises.

Ok, so you've established that both channels 1 and 2 on the Scarlett are working and are panned left and right and so setup as a stereo channel. Forget Ableton, make sure that's closed. Now open the Scarlett software mixer - if you don't have one then you havent installed the Scarlett properly and you need to get the software and drivers from Focusrite website. In the Scarlett monitoring software you can choose how your inputs behave. Try looking in there to see if you can monitor your input centrally through both speakers. There's no magic to this, it's trial and error.

the think that you don't know what to do is your Mother 32 tuner you must put it is your VCO 1 and follow the instruction on pag. 61 on your Mother 21 manual.

So are they going to do a bundle with all 3 and a 3-teir rack? Personally I'd like a bundle with the M32 and Subh. as I have no real interest in a DFAM. Also - individual prices - M32 - $650USD , DFAM - $650USD , Subh. - $700USD , 2 tier rack - $60USD - and the mixer doesn't seem to be available separately.

Its a class of product i refer to as "hobby in a box" its a creative product sold as a zero research, one purchace solution to "doing synths". Theres nothing wrong with it but its not aimed at anyone watching this channel. Its being marketed to people with more money than time, and no time to research where to get started in a new hobby
@darrenringer9811
Жыл бұрын
Nonsense, you can't get into eurorack for less than that with the same features. Arguably it's not 100% eurorack as it's only semi-modular and it uses weird voltages, and of course if one just wants to buy synths for cheap Behringer has you covered all day long. But this is a real instrument, up there with anything else, and your condescension is totally unwarranted.
