Those rotary pots seem so much more practical than the dirty scrapey sliders on the old Arp, though there's a visual feedback element to consider. Nicely replayed.

Thanks! Yeah, I've always preferred the look, feel, and generally better reliability of good rotary pots with good knobs over sliders.

You are most welcome, thanks for watching and commenting! Do you need to repair a Sub Phatty?
@zachledoux2117
Жыл бұрын
@@JohnLRice Yes, I never understood why the filter acted like that. Mine would track the cutoff until I took my hand off it, then it would go to some random setting. I messaged Moog, got the board, and installed it tonight. It was easier than I thought. A plastic pry tool (like a plastic mini crowbar ) was the only specialty tool needed to take the knobs off. A #11 socket and a #13 socket (for the headphone jack) here the other tools needed. When I first put it back together I forgot about the spacer for the filer pot that goes between the board and the face. Had to take it apart again. But otherwise was pretty smooth. Your video definitely helped. Thanks again.

@@JohnLRice Great demo. I note you are attaching the Synthcraft wood side panels to the Sub Phatty. Do you know if the Decksaver dust cover for the Sub Phatty will fit over the synth with these installed as they seem thicker in width than the old rubber panels which you have replaced?

@@gordonbennett7931 Thanks! 🙂 I'm sorry I don't have a Decksaver for my Sub Phatty so I can't check for you. Probably best to write to Synthcraft and ask if the Decksaver is compatible or at least ask them for the exact dimension of their side panels and then ask the Decksaver folks if they think it will work? Good luck! 😎👍

I haven't had any problem with my oscillator knobs. The octave pots might be damaged like the filter cutoff pot but I'd check for bad solder joints first? Good luck!

Hi, no, I don't know (or don't remember) if there was a serial or product number for the replacement board. I just contacted Moog service department through their website and described the problem I was having and asked if they could tell me the part number of the pot or if they still had the replacement boards I had heard about. I just paid for shipping an they sent me the board. Best of luck!

Those pots all look like plastic trimmer pots rather than durable metal pots. Am I seeing that right? Seems very odd Moog would use such cheap parts for that....

Right, maybe a step up from trimmer pots but not by much? I think a large majority of modern synths from most manufacturers use these sorts of pots, (or worse?), to keep costs down/profits high and at least partially to be able to cram more functionality in a smaller panel space? With the Moog modular reissues they used full sized metal shaft pots but arguably not as high quality as the originals. (the originals used robust Allen Bradley pots and the reissues have common Alpha pots)

@@JohnLRice its such a shame when companies cheap out on pots and jacks. I'd pay 10-15% more for a synth with premium pots and jacks. Can't stand those plastic pcb mount 1/4" output jacks with plastic nuts, especially on a $4-5K synthesizer.

Hey thanks for the info, I'm having the same problem. What steps did you take to get Moog to send a replacement panel?
@JohnLRice
10 ай бұрын
Hi, I submitted a support ticket and explained the problem and that I had heard there is a replacement board available: moogmusic-help.freshdesk.com/en/support/tickets/new It took them almost a month to get back to me but to be fair I sent the support ticket a couple days before Christmas 2022 so a lot of the folks there may have been on extended vacations? That said, in case you haven't heard Moog was bought out this year and is undergoing changes so hopefully they will be continuing the same high level of excellent support? An alternative if you can't get a replacement board and are up to the task of desoldering and soldering, would be to just find the value of the bad pot and order it from an electronics supplier like Digikey or Mouser etc. and replace the bad one. You could either get an identical replacement or you might look into getting a more robust pot that wouldn't solder directly to the PCB but you'd need to be prepared to fly wires from the pot to the PCB and deal with any physical size limitations etc. Good luck!

Do you know how to increase the movement force of the potentiometers on a Moog synth? I cleaned the filter of the mother 32 and now it moves easier that the other ones... 🙄
@JohnLRice
Жыл бұрын
Hi, what did you use as a cleaner? Many potentiometers use a dab of light grease, something similar to Vaseline, inside them to create the pleasing torque resistance. If some sort of solvent or contact cleaner got inside the pot it may have dissolved the grease so now the pot feels loose. Unfortunately the easiest and best way to fix this would be to unsolder the pot and replace it with a new one. If you don't have the technical skills to do this and you don't want to pay a tech to do it for you you might try taking the knob off, find a piece of felt or cork or rubber etc. material and cut a disk of it the diameter of the knob, cut a hole in the center for the pot shaft, then put the the felt over the shaft and replace the knob. The trick will be finding/making the felt piece the right thickness so that it adds a little turning resistance but not too much. Good luck! 🙂

i need to replace or resolder the usb port in my subphatty , do i have to take off the front panel ?
@JohnLRice
Жыл бұрын
I think you'd just need to remove both sides and then flip the front panel forward to get access to the small I/O board? (no need to take all the knobs off etc.) It might even be possible to just remove the left side but I can't remember how that little I/O PCB attaches to the bottom of the case so it might be difficult to remove and reinstall it with the front panel in place? Good luck and please come back and share your experience here so others with the same question can know what to do! 😎👍

I just did the same repair and when I power on the unit, all panel lights are reversed. Reinstalled the firmware but the panel lights are still inverted. Any suggestions?
@JohnLRice

How do you mean that the lights are inverted? They are lighted when "off" and dark when "on" or something? My first thought would be to recheck all of the multipin connectors but they are all polarized (I think) so it would take an effort to manage to connect them the wrong way. Is the synth functioning correctly otherwise? Best to contact Moog support if possible and ask them what to look for?
