Great review. The last chapter is one of my favorites from all the Bond books. Btw, for some reason the pepper in the vodka idea always fascinated me.

Great overview, thanks! One of my favorite Fleming reads. And it's fun to walk through all the editions. I've posted a link on my Spy Vibe site, with some brief notes about comics and an audio edition. Best, Jason (Spy Vibe)

It would have been nice to include the Pan 1970s cover with photographed objects related to the story

On the subject of elements from the Moonraker novel recontextualised in various EON-films: A distressed Bond and Vesper Lynd embracing under a running shower in the aftermath of a particular gruesome confrontation with the bad guys in "Casino Royale"(2006), struck me as highly reminiscent of the shower scene in Moonraker with Bond and Gala Brand.

The Moonraker is launched from cliffs next to the sea, that's why the sea is seen behind the stock photo missile. Fleming is subverting 'The White Cliffs of Dover', from the WW2 song, and that was the site that greeted the Dunkirk evacuees, and became a symbol of England. There's some irony in having the Bond villain Gustav Graves from Die Another Day playing Bond on the Radio. Where do you stand on the various audio book versions? Dan Stevens does a good Casino Royale.

I'm going through a reread of the Fleming books and admittedly, before recently, I would've said that Moonraker was bottom for me... but after rereading it again, its the first time that I was able to really get into the novel. Its definitely stuck with me and the more I think about it, the more the appreciation grows. Gala Brand is up there with my favorite Bond girls and adore that she essentially is the reason for the mission succeeding. I just finished Diamonds are Forever and can't wait to hear your thoughts!

Oh man, I kind of wanted a complete set of the new hardcover editions with new Michael Gillette artwork that are coming out this month, but you reminded me of that censorship issue…100% a pass if that’s the case.

Someone made a fictional poster with Orson Welles as Hugo in a fake film adaptation, and as you said in your Casino Royale video he would have made an excellent official Bond villain and that role is where he would have best fit, I believe. I have to say, I didn't very much like the actor who played Drax in the radio drama. Personal opinion, but after reading the book, he just didn't fit the character to me.

@@unclesporkums I feel that way about most of the radio dramas. ESPECIALLY what they did to Seraffimo Spang in DAF!!!!

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader I KNOW!! They made him sound like Divine or something! I was excited to hear Alfred Molina would be playing Blofeld, but then I was extremely disappointed with how bland he sounded, like he was just reading the copy without any emotion. David Suchet's off-base and overacting version of Dr. No really appealed to me for some reason, though.

I like the movie for Moonraker. It's over the top but has awesome Ken Adam sets. Its far out fun. 1970s escapism.

I haven't read the book, but I fucking love the movie. Yeah, there's some cringey goofy stuff in it, but having Bond literally save the world with laser-equipped space shuttles is too goddamned cool not to love. The score, opening titles, cinematography, girls, gadgets, hi-tech - it's ALL there, on-screen. And Bond gets the girl in the end, along with Jaws. Hell yes!
