Till 1954 it was believed that nobody can run a mile in less than 4 minutes. Even the best of the best athletes could not break that record.
Experts said our bodies are not designed to run a mile in less than 4 minutes.
But one man decided to break that record. Roger Bannister, a medical student from Oxford. He believed he could run a mile in less than 4 minutes.
Like others he practiced really hard physically and also mentally, he visualized breaking the record on his mind.
On the 6th of May 1954, he did the impossible, in front of a big crowd in Oxford, he successfully ran a mile in 3 minutes 59 seconds.
IT was a big news that time, he made history, world record.
The interesting thing is, after he broke the record within 46 days (about 1 and a half months) one man in Australia, John Landy ran a mile is less than 4 minutes, within 3 years 16 more people ran a mile in less than 4 minutes.
As on date thousands of runners have conquered a barrier that had once been considered hopelessly out of reach.
From 1865, hundreds of athletes tried to break the record, but nobody could till Roger Bannister proved to the world that it is possible.
When that limit was broken, the others saw that they could do something they had previously thought impossible.
It was not a physical barrier; it was a psychological barrier. A mental block .
As Human being we have tremendous potential, but what stops us from getting the results we want is our limiting belief system.
When my dad was doing 10th standard, if you pass 10th standard you are doing an excellent job, when I was in 10th, if you get distinction, you are good. But today when the results are out, askyour family members or Neighbours who are in 10th standard, you will not hear anything less than 90%. The first rank holder is some 99.99%
The standards have gone up, because our belief system changed about what is possible.
It took 23 years for Infosys to become a billion-dollar company , but it took just 23 months to become a 2 billion-dollar company . There was a shift in belief about what is possible.
Look at the no of unicorns in India, 10 years back we hardly had 1 - 2 in a year, now every month we have 1- 2.
Because there is a strong conviction that it is possible.
If you look at our world, most of things we are using now, it didn’t exist 100 years back, including the phone you are watching this. Someone believed it possible and they made it a reality.
Most of us don’t get in to breakthrough thinking because of our past experiences , its like this
If you force a grasshopper into a jar and fasten the lid, the grasshopper eventually shortens its jump after hitting the lid enough times.
After a while, even if you take the lid off the jar, the grasshopper will stay there - over a period it will forget that t can jump high.
We are a lot like grasshoppers in this way.
Limiting beliefs keep us in our comfort zone. Limiting beliefs are false beliefs that prevent us from pursuing our goals and desire. Limiting beliefs, in most cases, are unconscious thoughts, which appear as defence mechanisms to avoid possible frustrations, failure and disappointment.
So, how can you overcome your limiting beliefs?
Identify your limiting belief, you have to do some reflection and see whether it is a fact or fear.
2. Challenge your own belief - By taking action , do things which are scared of doing .
3.Raise Your Standards - Think Big , Do some Moonshot Thinking
Moonshot thinking challenges us to question what’s possible and to take on huge goals.
The word moonshoot thinking came from John F Kennedy’s famous speech . He pushed everyone to think big and man landed on the moon .
This is the power of moonshot thinking in action.
When we’re kids we believe we can be and achieve anything. But then, slowly, our big thinking starts disappearing, and before we know it, we’re playing it safe and setting goals we already know are achievable.
The problem with playing it safe is, it never results in a breakthrough.
As Henry ford said - Whether you think you can or think you can’t - You are right .
Business leaders are moonshot thinkers. They dare to dream the impossible.
Let us think big and hang out with people who are thinking big.
As they say Aim for the moon, if you miss you may hit a star.
