I prefer the smoother tone of the Fox in this video but both are nice sounding instruments.

Does the Moosmann have a model number?

Hi Michael, the Moosmann is just called the Performer because it's made exclusively for Richard Craig Woodwind. There isn't a specific model number.

That explains it. Do you know how it compares to their standard lineup?

It's basically a 150 with a high E added.

The Fox seems to be a student bassoon. The Moosmann is more a professional one. The Fox is nice but sounds a little bit dull in comparison. The Moosmann has more overtones und vibrates more. The sound is bigger and more full. It is not the top of the line Moosmann, but it has professional qualities and possibillities, so it is at the beginning a little bit harder to play on. The Fox seems to be a nice bassoon for a student.

I like your comments. They are both intermediate level bassoons with identical keywork, and they are in the same price bracket. That's why I chose those models for comparison.

By my opinion fox basoons dont have soul. They have very poor sound quiality, only plus is because they are easier to play at beginning. On the other side moosman is other universe. It is harder to play on beggining but after few weeks when you get used to is you start to develop richer and more powerful sound with more ( a lot more ) colours than fox. Thats my opinion from my experience from playing those 2.

I would agree with you on the Renard bassoons (the 240 here is one of their student models, which isn't made clear at all). The professional instruments are very different, much more colorful, clearer, and for me stand up to just about any other maker, though of course it's all a matter of personal preference. When I got my Fox II after playing a Renard 220 for a couple of years, I felt like all of the things I had been trying to do tonally were now possible. I like Moosmann instruments a lot; just decided to be a Fox player myself.

I am currently in the market for a bassoon. My heart is torn because I have loved the Fox Model IIs that I have tried but I did get to try an orchestral model Moosman once I believe. The instrument belonged to one of the graduate assistants that attended my university and I only used it during the masterclass of a young student at our double reed day; we called it "the blonde". At any rate, I remember that the Moosman responded VERY easily and I could play all sorts of dynamics that I hadn't achieved before. I didn't feel like I was lacking control either as you suggested but the instrument had been broken in by this point.

I know I'm a little late but I hope you went with a Moosmann if you have already bought your bassoon.
