Albert Camus, a French philosopher during 1942 introduces his philosophy of the absurd in the essay ‘The Myth of Sisyphus’. Sisyphus has been condemned by the gods to endlessly push a boulder up a hill only to have it roll back down again, and then repeat this task for eternity. The last line in the essay is ‘One must imagine Sisyphus happy’. Camus is suggesting that our own lives are as meaningless as the life of Sisyphus. He pushes a boulder back up a hill over and over but it will always fall back down. He compares this to the human search for meaning in life. He says that life will never have meaning because everything we do just brings us closer to inevitable death. This contradiction between the search for meaning and the inability to find it is called "the absurd". Camus says you should embrace the absurd, and search for meaning, knowing that you'll never actually find one. No matter what, you and everyone you know will eventually die, and everything you do is therefore meaningless. Therefore, the search for meaning is a pointless task, like Sisyphus with his boulder. To be happy in our own lives, we must imagine Sisyphus happy, because we too are stuck in an endless pointless task. It's once we have accepted this “task” that we can then start living life to its fullest. He's not saying "Sisyphus must be happy", he's saying "we must imagine Sisyphus happy, because if we can't then we will never be happy"

@octag0nal

@@Mok1986maybe a little bit, but he’s real clear with his main point: living is meaningless, so anything that WE find meaning in IS, functionally, that meaning. he’s not telling us to enjoy one thing or the other, he’s specifically saying that joy (and meaning) is subjective

My sister did the three peaks challenge a couple months ago, she had a great time doing it but the team that took her were terrible - too many people, not enough guides, not letting people get their bags out the coach between mountains so going ages without food or water or a change of clothes, leaving people in places (my sister got left twice), loosing peoples bags etc etc. Can't imagine having all that to deal with on top of doing all the walking! talking about the blisters - two of her toenails came off a week or so after!

I need you guys to do an episode on Appalachia. Superstitions, sayings, folklore, accents, history, foods, etc. Search “missing people from Appalachian trail” and look at the map. The mountains used to be connected to the Scottish Highlands, so there are some interesting similarities between the populations (big up Pangea). It was also connected to the Anti-Atlas Mountain Range (Morocco) and together were called the Central Pangean Mountains. You could do true or false with the folklore because it’s wild. Our mountains are older than Saturn’s rings and we have our own dinosaur, Appalachiosaurus. I feel like this would tickle your brains with history, dinosaurs, missing people, folklore, and culture. 🧠 Also, it’s pronounced like “Apple at cha.” Sincerely, a central Appalachian 🫶🏻

RE: Moral Dilemmas. I watch a show called Professor T which’s about a criminologist. He gave his students the situation of “Who would you save from a house fire, your mother or the person who has the cure for cancer?”. The answer that satisfied him was “I would save my mother of course because anyone who leaves their mother to be burnt alive doesn’t deserve to be cured of cancer”. Just thought this was an interesting one because I personally wouldn’t be thinking about curing my own possible cancer but rather the lives I could potentially save. 1 life of your mother vs millions.

With regards to the tribe, surely the most moral solution would be to come up with some sort of plan harvesting the plant in the least detrimental way possible, while also setting up some kind of conservation for the natural area and supporting the tribe either by temporarily rehoming them and ensuring their safe return when possible, or if possible not displacing them in the first place?

There was a portion of this podcast (I can't remember the timestamp exactly - I think it was around 40 minutes) where you were speaking about reducing suffering as much as possible, what is the right decision, and the widespread effects on more than humanity (i.e., ecosystems). You also referred to moral responsibility and saving two lives verses one life (Arthur made a good point with this where you've got to assume nothing else; as soon as you bring context to the scenario, opinions change. For example, say the two lives are two murderers and the one life is your stock standard inherently "good" human being). This conversation boils down to a theory of morality called utilitarianism. I learned about this in an Ethics class a few years back and it's concerned with advocating for a way forward that results in the maximisation of happiness or good for the most people; it's an outcome-based form of decision making essentially concerned with the greatest good for the greatest number of people. It would be interesting to hear you guys speak about ethics one pod! Regarding the toddler face down drowning in a puddle topic (a sentence I didn't expect to think let alone type today, by the way), duty of care also comes into play here. I'm not too informed on the specifics of this, but it might be interesting to hear Arthur's take on that considering it's more in the realm of law.

45:53 When I interviewed for medical school we were given the scenario to argue of there is one bed left in the intensive care unit and one 84 year old with Covid who needs an bed in intensive care but will take 3 weeks to treat or one 30 year with covid who needs a bed but will discharged in 2 days and the bed would be available for another patient and go on to treat more people in 3 weeks. We had to say what path we would take and justify our reasoning, it was a really interesting situation to think about and shows how these hypothetical moral dilemmas do come into play in real life particularly in the medical profession.

For the trolley problem i had initially looked at in a simlar sense to Bach and though that is was if the trolley was going towards the 2 people. Then that was just the way the universe had intended for things to happen and that without my input that woupd be the case. However it cpuld also be said that it was always gonna happen with my morals that i see the suffering of humanity as most important and thus that it was always the way that things would happen because my morals say so. So so interesting 🤔

The myth of Sisyphus “one must imagine Sisyphus happy”. One adaptation reads “as soon as my shoulder touches the stone, I am happy, I have purpose”. The gods gave this task to Sisyphus to punish him, yet his stoic mindset of making it his purpose angered the gods which motivated him to carry on. The boulder stopped being a punishment and became his duty.
