I've tried hitting that high C# at 5:01 and it is so hard. Otherwise, I love this piece. I'm playing this as my solo this year.

My senior year in high school I played this piece and that C# is indeed hard to play but it’s not impossible. Don’t shy away from something that’s too hard because that’s the areas where you can strive to be great at.

Thanks for posting your recording, Dave! Back in the late 1970’s when the Roseville Community Band had a weekend retreat in upper Minnesota at Gull Lake, we played concerts there and on the way, and I was the featured euphonium soloist on this piece. I've sent my daughter and grandkids a link to this video so they can hear what a fine piece of music it is.

Preparing this for my solo for my freshman year contest. The range isn't the issue, it's that blazing fast run in the end from the Eb to the Bb is the hardest part. This solo makes me wish i could play it on two different instruments, trombone and euphonium. I think that haunting opening and its sweeter sounding restatement is, for the most part better played on euphonium. However, the section from 1:07 - 1:30 as well as the allegro section and the end are just better suited to the brighter tone of the trombone. This recording is still one of my favorite ones out there for this solo, second only to the Victor Teuler one. Phenomenal job!

Have you heard the christian Lindberg recording?

Jackson Hunter Yeah, it’s a really good one, but I’ve always found his tone to almost be too smooth, and his vibrato is a bit too wide for my taste. Still an incredible player though.

Yep the Eb to High Bb scale thing at the end is the hardest part imo other than that its fairly moderate to play to

Great job, Dave. Thanks for posting. I remember hearing Andrew Justice (principal trombone of the Salvation Army’s ISB) play this at an impromptu talent night during a SA music school around 40 years ago (when we were both teenagers, I should add). It was much in vogue then but haven't heard it that often since. Have never heard it played on Euph but you have shown how well it works. Thanks so much for this and for your regular postings. You are an inspiration.

Nice playing Dave, I've played that piece on trombone at the Conservatory in my young years and tutored a couple of young players who were preparing it for college audition. I'ma also fooling around with it on tuba.

Dave, you mentioned that both bass and treble clef solo parts are available. Just out of curiosity, do you generally prefer to read bass clef or treble clef, or does it even matter?

I'm comfortable in either, but I like treble much better (it's more "logical" to me).
