Speaking of Diggas, fun fact: Waaaaaay back in the days of Rogue Trader, human mercenaries were sometimes recruited by Orks. By Blood Axes mostly, but some of the humans mimicked Orkish culture well enough that other Warbosses would hire them too. It's in the book "Freebooterz: Space Ork Army Lists". Here's a direct quote: "When confronted by such a strange aberration as Humans doing their best to swagger about like Orks, speaking in pidgin Orkish and dressed up like some ungainly parody of the Orky race, any Warbosses might be sufficiently baffled and flattered enough to let them come along with the tribe for entertainment value if nothing else". So yeah, Diggas have existed since first edition, though they weren't called that.

Wanted to make a ork warlord that was a sort of joke play on a "equality" movement. Where the warband is lead by a famous and infamous ork philospher who faces many criticisms from orkish society for being unorky although his followers think he's one of the orkiest orks that exist that's so orky he makes other orks insecure. He thinks that fighting is amazing and that green isn't a colour on ones skin but a colour within ones soul. The orky warband is extremely agreeable and trustworthy by orky standards and highly open and creative. and make extensive use of xenos who love to fight as well. The warband contains former khornate human outcasts, ogyrns, former imperial and chaos beastmen, etc. Whoever loves fighting is welcome to join the warband whether they're orky or not. The warlords dream is to have the entire galaxy erupted into co-operative light hearted wargames. So that Gork and Mork will be finally happy with the state of the galaxy and come for a visit. He loves looting and fighting and learning about how other cultures fight. And the warband doesn't discriminate heavily against certain types of fighting. Believing that it's the fighting that counts and that all races should be given proper equity based consideration for how they fight. Humans are squishy and will prefer to fight with firearms, and that's alright as long as they're fighting.

Somewhere between the release of 2nd and 3rd edition, GW decided that to bump up the player base of 40k they needed all the fanatsy factions to also be in 40k. But that took time to create rules and models which is why some of the fanatsy factions didnt appear until 3rd, most notably Dark Eldar and Necrons, the Exodites was the plan for the woodelves making it into space and the return of the slann and or zoats was the lizardmen. But then everyone stopped playing fantasy and start playing 40k, so a lot of the plans were suddenly dropped and it was decided that 40k should not be just fantasy battle in space (as that was the games biggest criticism), which is why the necrons were totally reworked from metal skeletons and metal zombies wearing flesh into what they are today, the exodites were quietly dropped as eldar riding dinosaurs shooting arrows at space marines is frankly laughable and instead we got totally unique factions like genestealer cults, ad mech and tau. GW makes cool models to sell....then makes the lore and rules around that model not the other way round. Which is why factions just disappear so easily, its not that GW have forgotten about them but they are not selling models or dont have models so are not making profit for GW therefor GW dont care about them. I guarantee if a large portion of the player base went out and bought raven gaurd upgrades along with a ton of space marines we would see more raven guard in the lore.

What's interesting with Chaos is when looked at through a lens like people of today, I can fully believe billions of people switching to worship them over another God, when you go from purely having to believe in signs of faith vs seeing actual embodiments of these gods, walking physical signs that they do exist and directly interact with you, even if you end up a writhing tentacled mess dripping with nurgles sticky blessing. It's that appeal to serving a higher purpose and shows not just physical but the mental toughness of guardsmen, they are fighting the forces of gods they know are real and exist, sure astartes might decide to show up but if you're not one of the few valuable assets you and your boys are alone. Actually beastmen have their own comic series. Summary it’s set on a war torn world that is still in the feudal era, there are regions afflicted by the warp and the story more or less follows a barbarian outcast mostly humanist beastman (can disguise himself but can’t use a laser because he almost lost a arm doing it- summary his finger for wedged in the trigger and stuck between letting the gun overheat and explode or destroying it… well yeah he destroyed it) However we pretty much know how the story ends because it’s shown in volume 3. A black Stone Mountain. A flash forward to the future where said mountain awakens and Necrons leave the planet. This happens just as the planet is on route to becoming a civilized planet by imperium standards. Needless to say the planet doesn’t withstand the Necrons so the ‘story’ we know is already doomed but not for the time as the character lived. Oh also he’s a beastman but basically he can shave- so he looks more like a mutant minus him having a lot of scars to remove ‘bad skin’ and so on. We’re on volume 16. There Is Orgyn that does sign language too… sign language being: finger painting what you want instead of sign language. Also demons aren’t effected by radiation because there were a few cultists using a crater as a summoning ritual but… for good reasons: remove the mutants of the land so they their city may spread. They also chose the radioactive crater so that they wouldn’t live past this heresy even if their hearts were in the right place. Also after this he is picked up by the Ogryn and because he has no hair because of radiation he’s welcomed mostly into human society thinking he’s a malformed or malnurished ogryn. Currently in volume 16 he’s in the hive and finding the cultist leaders. Summary: ‘if we are invaded by demons then the imperium will see our world as valuable because why else would we be attacked?’ So yeah, not higher ups causing this it common citizens more or less. Jk jk, I made this up (/0w0)/

As someone who grew up on the old rpg book of Warhammer 40k (that was my second foray into the word after dawn of war) I have a very very conflicting relationship with modern lore. I loved the navigator lore, the crimson guards concept (before the skitari truly became a continuous concept), the diverse Imperial Guard, the all concept of the agent of the dragoon (tech-heresy inquisition from mars), the various warp and space threat that are not the big threats. I love that chaotic world, which was very humourous and dark, yet human. 😊

Shoutout to the Arkhan Confederates, an Imperial Guard regiment that only exists in the book "Fire Warrior". They had an advanced, space-steampunk pocket-empire that stayed isolated from the Imperium until 998.M41 so they are still getting used to the whole "God Emperor" and "Tech-Heresy" thing. Plus they have "Steamblood Zouaves" which are aristocratic "knights" who walk around in Steampunk Power Armor. "Seven Stars for Old Fury!"

Intrax, or however you spell it, coming back as like A Foundation style opponent to the Imperium would be cool. It would really highlight how grime and terrible the Imperium is to show that dispite what they say this level of brutality is not nessary. Kinda like Ultramar or the Tau, but a little more refined.

Ya know hot take but I wish we had models based on the various factions/campaigns during the Great Crusade. Since a few were mentioned during this video but some other interesting factions were human empires that sadly lost to humanity such as the Auretian Technocracy and the Dulanians who were both advance human civilizations that rivaled Space Marine Legions

Thank you, Chonos. Always happy when a lore guy covers something I had forgotten or didn't know, which is becoming rare. I love the dog soldiers, and would love to see more. I know I am biased, though, because of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers, their code of loyalty and honor, and the fact that as a Marine, being likened to a Devil Dog has been part of my culture for one hundred and five years.

I would love to see you (and others) go over the Yu'Vath and the Umbra. Syama Pederson's short film, "Astartes," has two spherical, xenos entities which seem to me to be either Yu'Vath constructs or members of the Umbra species/whatever. Details are scant outside of early Rogue Trader and the more recent (as in, newer than the 1990's) Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader tabletop RPGs, but what we do have is both cool and creepy AF.

I want to see more of the Q’orl, the Umbra, and the Thyrrus. I made homecrew codexes for them back in 5th edition. Would love to see any of them in the lore again.

I wouldn't say the lost and the damned faction have been forgotten because we got a whole range of chaos worshipping humans and mutant miniatures for the 9th edition chaos codex along with a traitor guardsmen kill-team and we even got a beastmen kill-team boxset with gallowdark a BEASTMEN boxset of all things soo they're not forgotten more like fallen off into irrelevance? IDK but forgotten they sure are not

Dude those fraal or whatever the hell they are look and sound sick. And agree as someone that dislikes chaos, they could definitely use some actual chaos guard regiments that are more than cultist rabble.

Yeah honestly, I thought the major races in 40k were the only races for a long time, knowing that there are smaller xeno empires out there does make the setting feel more open, like there's more to explore, well more than what's already in the lore at least

Id really rather nit have the Rangdan come back. Their much more interesting as an unknown that the imperium actively suppressed the knowledge of. Further the fact that the imperium deployed weapons that wipedout the very information of the Rangdan from the universe both makes in almost a certainty that they are long gone, and that their very existence might have been some kind of memetic/cognito-hazard.

I feel like Rogue Traders have not been forgotten, they just don't suit a wargame faction so much. They're the focus of TTRPGs, video games and so on, they make for good unique main character perspective, especially when you need one with some flexibility in a generally inflexible world.

Eldar Exodites are the ones I’d like to see return as models the most. They don’t need a full army, could do a warband of them for whatever the 40k skirmish game is called again these days.

I think a good way to being back the exodites would be in a kill team like the corsairs were. I think itd be easier to explain a small exodite hunting party out and about doing shit than entire exodite army. Plus the kill team specific boxes tend to look real good.

Hmm, when you asked about if wh40k should have more serious things or comedic stuff in stories and games, I think Rogue Traders would be the best solution to cover all creatures, wonders and themes this galaxy could offer. If not a big ass game, maybe a movie or tv series could show many cool things you mentioned in your videos. With traders GW can show and tell all kind of fun stuff when ever needed too :)

For the brotherhood of the knife the character you are thinking of is Criol Fowst. He's the guy who slowly wormed his way into their ranks from Terra. Gets shot in the face near the end of the book, it was neat.
