Some time back in the 90s, I was by myself, dipping the ends of cello or viola tops in the melted wax. We used to melt the wax in an old frying pan that was sitting on a wood fire near the mill. Anyways, I bumped the pan with a piece of wood and tipped some melted wax into the fire. This resulted in a rather exciting fireball, near tons of dry wood, and there was only a single piss can available.

At some point safety was left behind, the mill is a place of production. That being said I have moved the dipping operation further away from buildings, so hopefully that helps. I would like to build a slightly more sophisticated dipping station and i kind of like the idea of using wood heat, just maybe not as sketchy as back in the 90s. A modified wood stove with a built in pan maybe so that the fire and wax are fully separated.

A froe is used do controlled splitting and never should be hit with an axe. The edge should be rounded so that the fulcrum works correctly. Please make a wooden club and take the time to learn this wonderful tool. Gransfor Bruks has the best geometry in my opinion,

Totally! It is a great tool, yes what we are doing is not really froe work. That’s the wrong way to use a froe, I cover the side effects of using a froe with an axe in another video, but we are production splitting with a deadline, so at the time speed out weighed tool preservation. I would loved to use a mallet and take my time. I have a nice froe now with a mallet that I pull out once in a while for special occasions, maybe you want to see that one.

Any red spruce in your area? I stopped using engleman to make my violins a few years ago.. the grain isn't always so straight in red spruce but the sound difference is astronomically better

You haven’t tried our Engelmann, do you like high density or low density when you build?

Engelmann, we are up in the mountains There’s only a few places engelmann actually grows and at the correct elevation and latitude to make really nice tonewood.
