This was taken Sunday, September 3rd at around 10:20pm PST in Southeastern Arizona. We were roadcrusing for snakes and came across these two on the road. Happy to come across a doubles, we got out of the car, then we noticed the larger snake was a Desert Kingsnake. Knowing that this snake was most likely hunting the smaller gopher snake, we stayed a ways off. Which is why the video is so low quality to start.
From what I've seen, I think snake-eating snakes will roll up to the prey snake to check if it's of edible size. And this kingsnake started to do that. But the gopher snake dipped and it just grabbed it by the tail and didn't bother really constricting it. Just took it down tail first like a total bully. I think the reason it did this was it probably typically hunts amongst the rocks and vegetation, but since it was in the street, it couldn't sneak up on it. It probably panicked and just took it down.
From initially grabbing the gopher snake's tail, it took 12 minutes to swallow it down. If you watch, you can see that occasionally the gopher snake would regain ground and pull out a little bit here and there. If the gopher snake hadn't hooked it's head around the body of the kingsnake, it probably would have gone down quicker. Totally brutal event and we were stoked to see it. No cars came by the entire 15 minutes we were stopped on the road. Such an amazing experience.
