Thank you for citing UW’s “partnership” with OceanGate, as I was curious about that after seeing the clip that ended just before the 15 minute mark with interviews from UW staff/students. Pretty much every other KZitemr (at least those I’ve watched, which is several) covering this story has made generalized statements regarding both Boeing and UW releasing their own independent statements to the public stating they did NOT in fact partner with OceanGate/Stockton Rush - “Generalized” being the key word here, as they alluded OceanGate never having worked with Boeing or UW, failing to mention that neither specifically worked on Titan, but at least UW partnered with OceanGate on their previous submersibles. Now I’ve got to do some research regarding Rush’s NASA partnership claim, as I haven’t heard much on that yet.

Obviously OceanGate didn't execute well and cut wayyyy too many corners, but honestly they had a good vision. The vast ocean is too unexplored for it being right here on earth. Making the ocean/deep sea more accessible for scientific research & materials is a worthwhile endeavor.

I still can't believe the friggin pressure vessel was capped with titanium via a glue joint. I mean, as a plumber, the idea of any critical joint being done with glue with zero redundancy is just mind boggling. For instance, in people's homes when it comes to critical joints like water supplys and gas piping the joints are designed so that factors that could lead to failure actually work to strengthen the joint. A simple example would be the titanium ring being a male piece that would slide inside of the carbon fiber tube and then be secured with a compression ring. That way when the ocean presure starts to compress the carbon fiber it actually pushes it tighter to the titanium.
@Insideoutcest

the pressure squeezes it shut so the glue is pointless. even screwing the front was kinda pointless since the force of the water could bolt it harder than any metal

From what I can see, he got greedy. He was salivating over the fact that each submersible drop was bringing him at least $1million in revenue (taking 4 people at a time). Imagine doing just one dive per week. Going early one morning and back later that day. From what I see, he was headed in the direction of turning this dives into a fast-paced tourist attraction that would net his company massive $$$.

What is amazing to me is that Titan even managed one deep dive, considering all the flaws in its construction. Stockon clearly got some things right - but a lot wrong. there were much more than just one successful dive, there was at least 22 to the titanic site itself, but there were also many others all over the world, some again to the same depth as the titanic, I believe the total number of dives to be around 150 in its 7 years of operation. Furthermore to what the OP said, Stockton actually spent a lot of time, money and resources in testing, not only did they test the actual submersible for 4 years before taking ‘tourists’ but previous to that they had done many tests on carbon fibre models as well as full sized carbon fibre hulls and the pressures it could handle.
