"Sandkings" by George Rail Road Martin is a great short story in the sf/hor mode. I'm interested in Blindsight by Peter Watts and you made it shift toward the top of my TBR list. The Space Vampires by Colin Wilson is an odd duck of a novel. It sounds like pulp and certainly has those elements but it's also full of philosophical and scientific discussion with serious themes. Not sure it's entirely successful but it is interesting. 14 by Peter Clines is one of my favorite conceptual horror novels. Compelling stuff and great fun.

Another great horror SF short story is Window by Bob Leman. Also, High Eight by Keith Roberts (written under the pen name David Stringer).

Blindsight is the most horrifying sf novel I've read in years. The aliens are kinda scary but the real nightmares come from the implications about consciousness and intelligence.

Honest question: what is so nightmarish about it? I think it’s mind bending and certainly makes you reconsider the nature of intelligence and consciousness. But why is it horrifying?

One that immediately comes to my mind & it was pretty good ( scary & atmospheric ) is Richard Paul Russo's " Ship of Fools" ( also known as " Unto Leviathan " in europe ) from 2001. Generation ship looking for remnants of humanity among stars stumbles upon giant alien ship, presumably abandoned... I'm going to try "14 " by Clines ..I heard about the book , but forgotten about it..

I’ll have to try Hell on Mars, and Video Night. I just read Manel Louriero’s first zombie book (English translation). I was pretty good (aside from some icky statements regarding a 17-yr old, which really comes across as the author’s wish fulfillment fantasy). Im going to try reading the next novel in Spanish (or maybe I’ll try the first novel in Spanish since I know the plot and dialogue now).

You could call Peter Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy scifi horror. It's only a 3000 page commitment. The Blindsight short film is impressive: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t6GImJykkYRhhoI I think of Leviathan Wakes as a 400 page book, since the audiobook is 20 hours.

Leviathan Wakes did such a great job mixing in horror. I was bummed the show omitted (most of it) that part when I watched. The escape of the station with Miller and Holden was terrifying and wonderfully written. I just ordered a copy of Blindsight to read as soon as I finish Project Hail Mary.

Just a recommendation - if you like well done cosmic horror graphic novels (I do- I can't get enough and read every one I can ger my paws on) "Nameless" by Grant Morrison is phenomenal. I don't want to give any spoilers, but at only 6 volumes, it's well worth the time. My all time favourite however, is "Clean Room," by Gail Simone. It's hands down the most creative take on sci-fi horror I've ever stumbled across. There's nothing else like it, and she creates a believable, vibrant, gruesome world that absolutely sucks you in. Hardly anyone seems to have heard of it, since she's better known for her Marvel stuff, but I can't say enough good things about Clean Room.

I want to check out Hell on Mars and 14. I DNFed Leviathan Wakes. Just couldn't connect. You should try Parasite by Darcy Coates. Definitely more horror than science fiction but I thought it was a fun time. I was hoping you were going to mention Paradise 1. I know it just came out today but I was hoping you had an arch of it 😉 or maybe you did read it but it didn't make the list because you didn't like it 😂 I just recently bought The Last Astronaut by the same author and hope to get to them both soon. Btw, I am currently reading Sea of Rust and it's great! Thanks for putting it on my radar.

For a purely Lovecraftian novel with a compelling tone, try That Which Should Not Be by Brett J. Talley. It's not science fictional, despite some fictional science in it, but gives great story by the shovelful. Fun book.
