As a middle-schooler living in Hawaii at the time, it was terrifying. People were in the streets staring at the sky. People jumped in boats and kayaks and tried to run off into the sea. People jammed to the available airports. The sirens blaring across Oahu made everything seem out of a movie. I texted and called loved ones. I sat with my mother in our car, sipping on a drink that tasted like sludge. I never expected to die that day, and I had 15 minutes to sit in silence about my mortality and the fragility of life. THIS WAS SO FUCKED UP. Millions of us didnʻt even get an apology or anything. No "sorry you were told you were gonna die."

I just left Hawaii after My Papa's funeral. I was sitting with my Mother-in-law in the mainland when I saw the facebook post from my cousin. At first I was confused I thought it was a joke since it was no where else and nothing on the news. I quickly realized that it was not and started calling all of my family members. I was sick to my stomach to think that I would lose each and everyone of my family members in a single moment. All I could think was I didn't want to be the last one left, I just lost the most important person to me I didn't want to lose everyone else at the same time. I just wanted to be there with my family, at that time I would have rather died with them all then live without any of them. All I could do is pray and cry. It was so traumatic I still shed tears to this day anytime I think about this, I'm just so glad that it wasn't real I don't think I could bear that.

I looked at my phone and my heart sank. Initially thinking this can't be real, then hearing the panic from neighbors surrounding me. I ran inside to get some sort of plan together. I had a million thoughts going through my head, where should I go, what should I bring, I'm too young to die. Started frantically changing clothes, putting important stuff in a back pack. Thinking I need to call Kaley, the love of my life. I grabbed my weed and was deciding which pipe to take when I accepted reality, then felt calmness and clarity takeover. I am about to die alone, and Kaley won't want to talk to me. so I'm getting high one last time. Sat down on my bed and fired up,

Most of the fighting happens in remote areas far away from big population centers.

@@hassanihsan6863 According to official Pentagon reports, 130 civilians were killed by drone strikes in 2019. However, according to independent researchers such as Airwars monitoring group, at least 416 civilians were killed in Syria for the first 6 months of 2019 alone. 130 dead civilians are already too many innocent people dead in the span of 1 year. And of course the Pentagon is inclined to report the most minimal figures of casualties possible because it is against their favor to report accurate numbers of how many were killed. For the 2018 figures estimated by Airwars, at least 5,947 civilians died at the hands of international military in Iraq, Syria, and Libya. airwars.org/reports/annual-assessments/ It doesn't matter how "completely normal" the main cities in Iraq and Syria seem. @@hassanihsan6863 That's not my image of those countries. I'm an Emirati citizen and lived in the Middle East for a chunk of my life and I know how great life could be in that region. Same thing applies in the current country I live in, the Philippines, where life is good where I live but activists and people living below the poverty line are regularly targeted by police brutality and parts of the southernmost region is war-torn due to Islamic militant groups. I just think that focusing on the "normal life" within the urban areas of a country with obvious glaring problems is choosing to be ignorant of your privilege. People yelling at us because we couldn’t provide them with more information. The hotel staff were all separated from our family members trying to make the best of the situation and here we have people yelling asking for protection from a NUCLEAR MISSLE. Afterwards when it was deemed to be a false alarm, the number of individuals requesting compensation from the hotel was ridiculous. That was quite a difficult and frustrating day.

I still can’t believe this happened. It was shocking to see just how poorly designed the user interface of Hawaii’s emergency alert system was. I’m an information technology major in college, and the fact that an interface THAT bad was implemented for a system as critical as EAS is astounding. All it would’ve taken to prevent this was a simple confirmation prompt. One prompt that pops up after clicking the button to send a non-drill alert that says something like “WARNING: You are about to send a REAL emergency alert for ‘missile strike’. Do you wish to continue?” would’ve stopped this, and would’ve taken at most a couple minutes to program into the interface. But what was even more ridiculous was that it took 38 fucking minutes to tell the people that it was a false alarm. Zero excuse for that, and they barely even apologized for traumatizing thousands of people.
