It's sad that Eric wasn't around anymore when they finally decided to make a "This is Your Life" episode for Ernie Wise. All the people present talked about the wonderful duo and the happy memories from the M&W show, and it was so heartbreaking to see Ernie sit there alone.

What do you say, but brilliant. I have stolen - and adapted - Ernie's joke about school qualifications and used it multiple times in my life and did not remember, until now, where the joke came from .

+John King sadly much of the Thames stuff was a rehash of the older BBC material as has been admitted in various books about them.. In all honesty Morecambe and Wise were never the same after his second heart attack

By 1982 the quality and material of the Thames shows were dire. They also had to encounter the fact that their comedy style was becoming dated.
@dlamiss

+John King interesting point regarding it becoming dated. The Blockbuster sketches with Previn, Bassey etc still stand the test of time but a lot of the bread and butter material such as this sort of sketch has dated very badly. Whereas the Two Ronnies material INHO has aged much better

This is first broadcast [series 1 episode 4] in September 1980 for Thames TV,and this is my all-time favourite sketch,and I remember this first screened on Tuesday night at 8:30 pm,and I`ve got the complete series on DVD,and I hope they`ll bring more shows for Thames TV and release on DVD by Network DVD.

I'm not sure. There were two "This Is Your Life" sketches". One was broadcast on 24 September, 1980 on episode 4 of the first Thames TV series. Second one was in Series 3 on Thames TV. Episode 4, broadcast on 17th November 1982. Both were scripted by the great Eddie Braben.

@BritishAlienCompany I would guess this would be early about eighties. Eric died in 1984 and this looks like on of the ITV shows they did at Thames Television. They left the Beeb around 1977-78.

I'm a bit surprised to hear this was from the Eddie Braben. I never really got on with their ITV stuff; I thought they went rather downhill when they left the Beeb, so I'm surprised to hear it was material from one of their original writers.

Yes, you are quite right. This sketch is a re-working, a remix I should say, of several sketches they did about ten years earlier. I have them on an LP I bought in 1971. The BBC years were their best. They were giants of comedy then. The ITV shows just somehow don't have the same quality.
@martm216

Quite right. It was from an earlier series on the BBC. I know 'cause I have the original sketch on an LP I bought around 1971. The original was better, although this one is of course still funny. They were comic giants. And Eddie Braben was their best writer.
