Adding a couple of sticks to a mesh bag so the walls don't rub together as much helps some, I've found, but yeah more rigid containers for better with more delicate mushrooms.

Well, this certainly made my birthday morning a lot less depressing than it was half an hour ago, thank you! I cannot get over those Morels. The day I find one on public land here will be a very special day indeed. I want to photograph them on macro so badly... seriously couldn't believe my eyes seeing that absolutely ginormous Peziza either! Blimey! I can't help but think about how magical the primeval forests once were; the size of the fungi our ancestors once saw. They would have taught their children everything you mention in this video, noticing the signs, the small pointers, subtle clues, the connectivity. Seeing that bounty at the end, glistening in the sunlight; you can just imagine the woven baskets once carried by people thousands of years ago, and that exact same feeling they would have had that you guys did. It's beautiful. This is true human continuity. 🌲🌳🌲

Happy Birthday! 🥳 🍄 Wishing you lots of smiles, laughter, lichens, mushrooms ... and all the other makings of a perfect day! Always appreciate your comments and insights! And I bet that morel is waiting for you out there - they truly are incredible photography subjects and would make for terrific macro shots. I think you're right about the whole foraging thing. It really does connect us to our past and seems to be hardwired into our DNA. Few things bring the satisfaction of a full basket ... and I always feel that so much of nourishment comes from the process and just being out there. Hope you're having the perfect day!

@@MushroomTrail Thank you! I've been trying to give myself a break from painting, so I've mainly been hanging out with the starlings and napping with my cat (and eating pastries), so definitely the perfect day in the end. I must try to start filming those birds soon, they're getting friendlier and friendlier every time I go out there. You're so right when you speak of nourishment in the process. See, this is the psychological antidote against any trial and tribulation relating to human survival and comfort in the wild. It feels right to repeat these behaviours; it's like an atavistic release of serotonin. Nothing in life was meant to be a chore, and I don't even think the concept existed before we invented things like 'washing-up'! I don't know if you've ever heard of a woman called Ffyona Campbell (an incredible long distance walker back in the 90's, Africa and Australia etc... and lived with Aboriginal tribes and African Pygmies), but if you can get a copy of 'The Hunter Gatherer Way", her unusual insights might blow your mind a little, likewise a follow up book called "The Beat of a Different Drum". It did make me sad wishing I could step outside my door and forage so easily too, but I'm wary of pollution so I have to venture to spots I feel 100% safe picking from, which is tricky without a car, but I'm determined to get my bike set up for summer. I might be another year older, and my knees feel like they've lived a dozen lives already, but I'm not admitting defeat just yet! (PS, I think youtube thinks I'm spam, maybe because I copy and paste from a notepad, so I'm sorry if this comes out twice because the other comment didn't show up my end!)

I'm not familiar with Ffyona Campbell but will have to give it a look - I like the sound of long distance walking! And I hear you on being wary of pollution ... it often pains me to have to pass on massive flushes of Agaricus augustus due to the simple fact that I don't typically want to take anything from the roadside home to my plate. So it goes I suppose. Glad the day is treating you well - watch out, those Starlings just might break out in a Happy Birthday chorus one of these years!

@@MushroomTrail Yeah, I remember reading about the heavy metal content in Agaricus. Similar to arsenic in Laccaria sp. Wild Food UK did a brilliant youtube video about radium in agaricus by a road. I worry about run-offs from the car parks too. I'm actually collecting a fungarium of dried specimens, mainly from one location in particular, because I'm convinced someone will find the lab results interesting one day if they are ever tested. With such high footfall to this place, and the spreading of spores on feet and paws, perhaps the DNA strains will be of use too. Either way, it's all a great way to learn, and at least I've got a good source of material for when I get a microscope one day. Spore portraits are on my to-do list! Right, I better go and get those mealworms soaking for the morning and prep all the food tubs. I've got a squirrel that comes for a shelled walnut and some peanuts every morning, and he's getting a Brazil nut treat tomorrow. You can't give too many of those though, as it makes them a bit nut-drunk apparently! I'll have to teach the starlings to serenade me for next years birthday, at the moment it's mainly lots of squawks, barks and squeals, along with that amazing buzzard impression and 1980's robot sounds. I've just got to document them. They make me smile so much, they really do. I think they've brain washed me into spending all my money on bird food! They're domesticating me!

Hey there, great video, thank you for sharing a great adventure. Been getting out a few times as well , and your right starting to show up. Thanks for the great tips, look forward to more morel finds. Always love discovering key indicators or things that stand out in each area. Any upcoming trips again? Will be heading out this week also. Be great to geet together is heading to the same location. With all the rain we have had and with the upcoming temps should be exploding everywhere next week for sure. Thanks again👊🍄

Thanks! Just checked out your vids/posts - and sub'd - great stuff! Very cool that you're cultivating wild strains - love seeing that culture of wild Chaga! Don't have any current plans to get back out there at the moment, but you're correct, that rain combined with rising temps is about to treat those burns well. Would be great to cross paths - let's be in touch!👍

Morels have such a lovely texture when eaten. I've never been able to figure out how to find them in W. Washington except for landscape morels. I've done well on some salmon enhancement projects though, lol.

I agree - soooo good! And I would recommend beginning either under Black Cottonwood (where you've got a good chance of Verpa bohemica, Morchella populiphila, and Morchella americana) and in recent (first year) wildfire burn sites. Those naturals aren't as easy to come across here in the PNW as in parts of the midwest and elsewhere... but so worth looking for!

@@MushroomTrail Thanks 😊 I actually grew up picking Verpas under cottonwood, but they just aren't the same as true Morels! Lol. Everyone called then morels though anyways when I was a kid.

Yep - I agree! A lot of times the true morels will actually show up in the same spots as the Verpas (just a couple weeks later ... but can be tricky, and obviously not always the case). Happy Hunting!

What kind of day and night time temperature are looking to see to know when it is a good time to go looking for morels? Also thanks for taking the time to make these.

It really all comes down to soil temp - and most people agree that low 50's is an ideal soil temp (so often the southern slopes that get more sun exposure begin to fruit first). But it is worth noting that not everyone agrees and there is certainly some debate on the specifics. I've heard that when the daily low and high temp add to 100°F you're usually in a good range, and this seems to be true for the most part. Personally, I like to see those overnight lows hold at or near 40°F

I ended up finding the area based on our past communication. I had some luck and found my and the kids first morels. We also saw a bear on the drive in and heard of another bear sighting near the burn. We didnt discover any amazing flushes but just a couple of groupings of 2 or 3. Our finds were the narrow skinny, very pointy, darker color variety and also some all dried out and past their prime. Also found areas of gyromitra which show up before or along morels?

That is awesome! So glad to hear - and cool to get the kids out there ... sounds like quite the experience between the bear sighting and morels! I saw the biggest flush of Gyromitra that I had ever seen out there on a big downed tree down slope from the initial high shelf (towards the river) ... definitely a toxic mushroom to avoid, but so fun to admire! Congrats on the morel finds 👍

I also was down there a few weeks ago... lots of foot traffic for a small burn... but did find a few handfuls. Was kind of thinking on hiking up the mountain there to that 2yr old burn. Maybe might fine bigger ones & better quality... for sure less foot traffic.
