These huge temples, which cannot be manned fully and will only be open mostly by appointment or only on certain days, are ridiculous!. Wouldn't these gazillions of dollars be better spent doing charity work in the countries where these temples look grossly out of place and like the castles that kings built to keep the peasants out? Schools, farming projects, health care would be nicer ways to use these funds. But sadly, Russ has no intention of backing down until he's 6 feet under. And then what will Jesus do?

I just realized something when you started talking about the taxes and home values that I hadn't thought about yet: in Texas, there isn't any income tax, and they make up for it with propery taxes. So, increased property values will just end up costing the residents more money every year (even if they don't have a mortgage). And if people are retired there, they're not planning on selling, so there is literally no benefit to their property values increasing. And I cannot believe they actually say that if they don't like it, they can leave. They were there first! It is their home. You don't get to come in and change the rules and then push the residents out. That's not ok.

do they, I think they want to be known as Christ's church, not a stringent following of Christ, but following him, there were temples in the OT, and people went there and we don't know a lot of what they did, because those things are not written down in the bible, but we know that people who went there were priests and they were goodly people and in that temple everyone wears white, so there are no divisions of education and such, and it has a peaceful surrounding and we go there to reflect on those things in our lives that we want to understand better, so temples are built and those priests who we read have the power to bind things together and to break a sealing as we read in the OT, marry couples for eternity, which is the perfect way of living, living righteous life so that you can be together with that person and perhaps your children. And we know we are to be baptized and we do baptisms for those who are waiting for their baptism done by proxy and I have to be temple and felt certain people very strongly who accepted that baptism. Years ago, the church built a temple in my City in a commercial zoning area adjacent to a very expensive residential area with extremely strict zoning. I worked with the City's planning department at the time it was going through the approvals, and the church was quite reasonable. As a result, a temple was built, and while it was big, it's not higher than allowed by the zoning. I believe they requested and were granted an exception that allowed them to have a small spire that was slightly higher than the zoning allowed for, but in all, it fits with the zoning and the area it was placed in. I do not understand why they'd now take a belligerent/non-conformist approach for planning applications. It will only harm the reputation of the church and make the neighbors resent them.

There is a passage in the Bible in Matthew 24:1-2 where the disciples are marveling at the temple of Jerusalem, and Jesus says to them ‘Assuredly I say to you, not one stone shall be left upon another, that shall not be thrown down.’ Basically, Jesus was telling them instead of placing their confidence and hope in a temple building, they should place their hope in Christ Himself. He sensed they were making a false idol out of the temple as if it was going to bring them closer to God, when in fact, God in the flesh was literally standing right next to them. His prophesy that the temple would be destroyed came true in 70 A.D., and it signified that there was no longer a need for temples going forward as we now all have direct access to God through Jesus. Somehow the LDS church has missed this key aspect of the gospel and made an idol out of their temple buildings. This has become very clear to all who are witnessing this Fairview example.

Aside from the overall bad look that the lawsuit & the breaking of the zoning laws gives the church, I think this publicity about temples in general is going to lead to so much bad PR. People who are unfamiliar with Mormons are going to look up what temples are like and the videos on their feed will be about all the weird movies, clothes, and rituals that go on there. And that the general public is not allowed to use such a huge building in any way! People are going to change from the opinion that "I wouldn't mind a reasonable temple" to "I don't want that cult in my neighborhood at all."

You can make a case for many more churches, and you can make a case for a very big church. You can not make a case for both at the same time. A temple that is 30 ft high can contain the same number of parishioners as a 270 ft high temple. In this type of construction, the vertical space is grossly underutilized or totally empty. The tradition of very high temples came from the Byzantine era, when the only way to have a large ground-floor area was to make huge arches that were much higher than wide. Nothing of this is necessary any longer.

At this point, the LDS Church should build a community center inclusive of all zoning requirements that will be beneficial for the entire community such as a library or recreational center or both! They need to cut their losses and ask for forgiveness. How can the genpop membership be ok with this? Yes, you want to do work for your ancestors, I understand this. However, Article of Faith 12 states: “We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.” (Articles of Faith, “Pearl of Great Price”, 1851.

The mormons built one of those tall temples about half a mile as the crow flies from the house where I grew up. Our quiet neighborhood on the outskirts of town suddenly had to contend with this ostentascious white spire that stays brightly lit all night (the church claimed that since they had an idol of the angel Moroni on the top, it was like an American flag). My parents were furious, since we'd recently moved from Las Vegas and got away from the lights of the strip shining on our front yard the exact way that temple now did. The same area also allowed a giant warehouse-like Bethel church and several smaller churches all in the same area. Traffic down that road on Sundays is horrible.

I work in Zoning for a living. Whatever is being built aside, I completely understand the frustration with codes and I've seen some great projects get the boot because of zoning codes. That said, unless the Board has decided a substantially similar project has been approved in this zoning district under the same exact administration OR the courts go completely off the wall, there is no way the church can get away with suing for religious persecution. Code is code. That's all that matters here. I could go on for multiple paragraphs about this, and I'm sure the Board is a little nervous for a religious persecution lawsuit that will unfortunately cost the taxpayers no matter what, but code is law and again, unless a substantially similar project has been approved under the same exact administration in the same exact zone, they (should) have absolutely no case.

I wonder if the local residents realize the extent in which they will not be able to interact with this structure as they would with other community buildings or churches. It can be a little misleading as on the surface it will appear that “all are welcome” possibly not fully disclosing upfront that all are welcome if they conform to their ways of worshipping such as baptism, regular Sunday attendance to their smaller local buildings of worship, pay 10% of their income and then if they are found “worthy” by a bishop, they can eventually enter this temple to then perform work that some find unsettling as it pertains to the dead and where they will make promises to donate their time, talents, resources and life if asked of to the church. So it’s not as simple and sincere as “all are welcome”. It’s a little more involved just like the full truth around the church’s history as it pertains to its truth claims. For example, the difference between who they say Joseph Smith was, the origination of the Book of Mormon and versions of the first vision compared to what the actual facts show. There is so much more to Mormonism than what appears on the surface. I’m all for worshipping how one chooses, but would like to see full disclosure upfront giving folks the opportunity and courtesy to make informed choices.

In 2021 the church changed their plans to build a temple in Erda, UT to Tooele, UT instead because not only did they plan to build a temple but a high density condominiums and parks to surround it in a rural area. I moved to Tooele recently and it definitely sticks out from its surroundings, especially with how bright it’s lit up at night. I hope all works out in Fairviews favor because it will change the feel of the area for sure if a fair compromise can’t be made.
