Blazon: Argent an eagle displayed with two heads sable. Crest-An eagle displayed sable. This was the coat of arms of the Morris family of The Hurst, co. Salop, England. The family is said to descend from John Morris, an Alderman who lived in the 16th century, the son of Morris ap David. And here we see a picture of the family the seat, The Hurst, near Shrewsbury. It was built sometime between 1813-1835.
Blazon: Sable on a saltire engrailed ermine a bezant charged with a cross couped gules. Crest-A lion rampant or, charged on the shoulder with a cross couped gules within a chain in the form of an arch gold. This was the coat of arms of the Morris family of Clasemont. The Morris Baronetcy, of Clasemont in the County of Glamorgan, was created in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom on May 12th 1806 for the copper and coal magnate, John Morris, son of Robert Morris and Margaret Jenkins.
Here we see a photograph of John Armine Morris, 3rd Baronet (1813-1893). And here is an oil painting of his daughter, Henrietta Ellen Morris. And lastly, we see a photograph of Sir George Lockwood Morris, 8th Baronet (1859-1947) who was a Welsh an international rugby player who won five caps for Wales.
Blazon: Quarterly, 1st and 4th, guardant a lion rampant reguardant or; 2nd and 3rd, argent three boars’ heads couped sable Crest-A lion rampant reguardant. or. This was the coat of arms of the Morris family of Netherby, a family who claims descent from a powerful Chieftain in Wales who lived in the 900s AD. The modern branch of the family was founded by Owen Morris, born c. 1670, who had five sons and three daughters. In the 19th century, the family was represented by Rev. Francis Orpen Morris of Netherby, North Riding, co. York, who was Chaplain to the Duke of Cleveland.
Blazon: Azure three eaglets displayed or, on a canton argent a castle gules. I believe this was the coat of arms of Robert Morris of North Elmsall, co. York, who was born c. 1645. The canton in the arms alludes to the seizure of Ponefract Castle by his father, Colonel John Morris (d. 1649) during the English Civil War. Colonel John Morris, the eldest son of Mathias, was a celebrated and dashing army officer of the First English Civil War. Her served on both the royalist and parliamentary sides of the conflict and was tried for treason.
Blazon: Gules a saltire engrailed argent guttee de sang. Crest - A lion’s head erased guttee de sang. This coat of arms was granted to Captain Richard Morris on April 10th, 1677. My best guess is this was the coat of arms of Captain Richard Morris, who was born in Tintern, Monmouthshire, Wales, in 1616 and died in New York in 1682. Some sources have him dying in 1672, so maybe I am wrong here. Captain Richard Morris was among the bravest of Cromwell's warriors. Their most famous exploit was the capture of Chepstow Castle. After buying an estate in Barbados Richard and his brother Lewis still yearned for the excitement of war, and urged Cromwell to attack Spain in the West Indies. He was apparently unsuccessful, because he sailed for his plantations as a settler and not a soldier.
