Prince knew that if he passed as mixed, he would be more palatable to white audiences. MTV wasn’t even playing Black videos back then. You’ll notice that he was pretending he couldn’t dance on older videos. He was flailing around like Mick Jagger. After he got his foot in the door, all of a sudden he turned into James Brown! 😂 He said it himself in the song What’s My Name. He said “You never would’ve drank my coffee if I hadn’t served you Cream”

That commitment to racism that BS Smith refers to is greatly myth in 2021. Just because say0.5 % are supremists...that does NOT reflect the overwhelming support for equal "Opportunity" in this country that exists today. Equal OPPORTUNITY not, equal OUTCOME. Do I believe racism is dead? no but it IS (imo)highly exaggerated in this country...and many statistics bare it out. I think it s time to think collectively as Americans (Black White,Latino Asian Jewish etc) and take stock of what are REAL issues that desparately need attention and what are issuesare being hyped and are not is pressing. Case in point,education across the board in America is failing Americans focused in on politicized agenda in the curriculum as opposed to the areas we are falling miserably behind in: communication skills,Math, Science Computers and engineering.etc. America s getting squashed by India,China and even Europe there.

why does Morris keep repeating he only got paid 55k for his role in Purple Rain ? No offense but til this day Purple Rain is repeated for one reason...PRINCE. He was the STAR of the movie. Not only that Prince co-directed, co-produced Purple Rain. He's also the reason for ALL the music in the movie LOL. Not only that, Morris said himself he showed up late, he was lazy, he didn't like working hard in acting. Bro you are blessed man! lol

But Prince's narcissistic treatment of Morris and The Time predated the movie. Not to mention, there is no swag to the movie without the protagonist - Morris, and to a lesser degree Jerome (AT LEAST pay the man at co-star scale). The well-chronicled stories of Prince booking Morris's band, having them travel to the venue, and then changing his mind (and not paying them) is ALL post-Purple Rain behavior? None of us are in a position to condemn another person but the bully tactics Prince accused Warner Brothers of was the ultimate karma. Having said that...RIP to one of the greatest ever.

There is no doubt that Morris added amazing personality to Purple Rain but it's fair in business to say "hey since i did 97% of the work and also the movie wouldn't be a box office hit without my name, "Prince" " it makes complete sense! lol Again Morris is great but in 2021 and beyond, newer generations will watch Purple Rain for PRINCE
@marinz4life

@Sign Times well by that logic the same could be said about Prince’s issues with Warner Brothers? Which is more unjustifiable: Prince taking advantage of his childhood friend with a drug problem - OR - Warner Brothers operating to the letter of the law with an artist who outperforms his contract? My real point was everyone wants to be treated fairly. And I understand that people’s version of what fair looks like will differ. I grew up in Saint Paul, MN and many of us know Prince had a petty side to him that very few people outside of the Twin Cities are aware of. I’m proud of his success opening the doors for others but it’s ironic that a person who truly was not into drugs, but truly was a prick towards MANY childhood friends - ended up dying from a drug addiction. I’m not here to bash him as much as I’m trying to convey all of us need to heed the counsel of the divine...especially when we think we have the high-hand. RIP Prince.
@saa9099

@@saiyanleague653 not only did prince do 97% of the work, he had to bankroll 50% of the 7k. To make the movie. Warner wasn't interested in a movie, you can count on one hand how many people financially put in. Prince had to feel some kind of way about that. Then Warner set back and collected because prince was signed to them. Morris was forced to finish the movie, he wasn't feeling it but was under contract, and yes that is how we know his name. He wasn't paid less than anyone else, and as you said he is still collecting too. I enjoyed Morris's character in the movie and he got paid.

@@marinz4life Prince did more than open doors, he created a band for his childhood friends. He wrote and produced all the songs, so I don't blame him for protecting HIS brand. Maybe Vanity would've made purple rain bigger...BUT I always thought that Appollonia brought a sense of innocence/humility to the role that I don't think Vanity could have done in a believable way.

Love Morris, however, he doesnt hold a candle to Prince. Without prince, we wouldn't know Morris. Prince had stamina and work ethic that Morris couldn't touch. Morris cant play 20 instruments, and jump and play guitar at same time. He needs to get off the whole "i got wronged" crap. He's lucky, and if I were Prince, I'd say..ur welcome. Jerome made half of the time anyways. Keep in mind, we r talking about 23 year olds at that time. Thats what is kind blowing. Just say it morris...did Prince sell his soul and none of u did? Is that why he rose and u all didn't? Tell the whole thing. We now know enough about music industry. Prince was multi ethnic. We are one race. Thats what Prince said over and over again. But, nope, here we r and they r still playing the race card. If ur race had something to do with knowing talent and good music, then too bad 4 u. I dont care what he was, his music is what i came to the party for.

Morris could also be an A-hole too Both of them had Egos Also Prince used Majority Of his money for the filming Warner Bros. wasn’t backing him Also they had to Pull Morris up Onset almost every day he was too busy getting high and Wild enough not to film remember he did say they were not respecting his time he seem to be a little arrogant himself and if anything most directors would have fired him Especially showing up to the set drunk and high So yeah he did him a huge favor and cut him a big break but now that prince Has passed on it’s cool to dog him He owed his career to him without prince He would be still singing tracks Prince wrote Almost 40 years ago It’s not cool

I disagree. If Morris is making more money now, it’s probably more because people realize Morris is the next most interesting person in the Prince Universe, after Prince. Yes, some of his journey with Prince may shed a sort of bad light on Prince, but he more than makes up for it by telling how incredible and amazing Prince was and how blessed he was to work with him. I’m sure Prince would rather have Morris make money off his legacy, that the lawyers that control his estate now.

Prince was mixed! Everyone knows that. Black father and if not mistaken, an Italian mother. Obviously, he actually carried himself as a Black man, by speech, mannerism, dress, etc. So, don't trip! All you gotta do is pull out a pic, and look at him! Case closed!

@@lavictorsermons5345 Please cite the source in which Prince cited that his mother is Italian. You know the Purple Rain movie was fictional, right? Prince’s mother is Mattie Della Shaw Baker. Google it... she is a light-complexioned Black woman. Her parents were light-complexioned Black people. I googled her birth certificate and her parents, Frank Shaw and Lucille Shaw are both listed as Black. My colleague is biracial (Black father and White mother ) and she is very brown-skinned.

@@Justheresoiwontgetfined slavery was the way of the world when your people were sold by Africans and Arabs and the Spanish. America had the least amount of slaves and is the only country that fought to end slavery. For example South America had an enormous amount of slaves. It's only white people you're annoyed with that had slaves, that's hypocrisy and ignorance.
