It is because of albums like these that I'm reminded again and again to listen to my own curiosity, trust my judgement. I know that for many, foes as well as fans, this album became some kind of a mark post of Morrissey's supposed artistic wane. And even Morrissey himself has tended to disregard this album. I don't believe he ever plays anything of this album live. But I've always felt that Morrissey was inherently not a singer, but a writer who sang his work. Among all his work, Smiths and solo, this is most developed in Kill Uncle. Kill Uncle feels like an anthology, a short-story collection, a coherent whole out of many deepingly revealing parts. For its bravery, and not only for tackling a new new voice in lyrics, but also taking on music that seem more like traditional ballads than contemporary pop music, this is Morrissey's finest solo work. In Kill Uncle, Morrissey and his band reinterpret traditional ballads as contemporary popular music. This album deserves much more respect and exploration.

@@jamesvozniak1149 Mark Nevin: “Then when we [the band] did the first song, ‘Our Frank’ we hadn’t heard the lyrics, then Morrissey came along and put the guide vocal on it, they put a real Elvis echo to his voice. We were nervous like, it was like the first day of school and the energy around him; you don’t feel relaxed around Morrissey. Then he sang the ‘frankly vulgar red pullover’ bit - are we supposed to laugh or not? Bom, trágico, doce, satírico, absurdo...enfim uma janela espiritual nessa porra de vida maluca sofrida e sem sentido nenhum... uma viajem da alma do início ao fim... a energia lembra tanto legião urbana dos primeiros discos... e nem me refiro as alusões românticas, respeito e até fico admirado pela capacidade poética... eu mergulho na visão do sofrimento que ele deve ter vivido e transmite muito bem... rejeição da diferença, sei bem o que é... “I’m just passing through here on m’y way to somewhere civilized” 🙌🏻🧘🏻♂️🙏🏻

I had this cassette in 1993 when my mom gave it to me I believe. I was in second grade. I loved it. And if you think I was the only second grader who had this, you'd be wrong! I met a kid Brett Arnold in my class who ALSO loved "Kill Uncle" and told me he had the CD at his house. Well, needless to say we became friends. The kid came from money and had a pool with ceramic lions spitting out water. We'd sit in his pool with Kill Uncle going and Rattle and Hum by U2. I haven't heard this album in about 25 years. Now that I'm hearing it again, it really doesn't have the same effect. I think you had to hear this stuff back then, because I'm not getting the same vibes from this that I used to. The only songs that seem to be as great as I remember them are "Our Frank," "Found Found Found," and "Driving your girlfriend home". Maybe a few others, but quite a lot of the album does not sound as special as I remember.
