Morrowind's combat does its job perfectly, minus the bugs that keep it from working 100% as intended. It was made to run like a tabletop RPG but in a video game.

I wouldn’t call that good combat to be honest. If I’m up close and I physically make contact with my target with my weapon I expect it to hit and not magically miss. It may be more fun to some but not to me. The original comment is correct in what they say.

@Nrex117 You didn't "physically make contact". It's assumed that your weapon slid off their armor, or they dodged, or any number of other things resulted in you not doing any damage. People used to be capable of suspending their disbelief enough to enjoy these types of systems. Now most of us can't, which I personally attribute to brain rot but eh, to each his own I suppose...

I've played many, many CRPGs of varying types and, no. Morrowind's combat does not do its job "perfectly." There's no point to the stamina system that says "you're a jerk for running so now you will be at a disadvantage for... hmm... all of your rolls now. yes this is fair" If you wanted me to not run just remove the run button from the game. Its even more ridiculous when you realize the entire system is pointless because you can wait for an hour and get all stamina back. There's no point to the differing attack types _at all_ and the game experience is objectively improved by turning on "Always use best attack" in the options. Requiring the player to aim to use ranged weapons completely undermines the TTRPG style rolling system because you have to both be a skilled player and a skilled character in order to hit. The point of TTRPG style rolls is to remove player skill (or lack thereof) from the equation, which makes the narrative about the character, not the player. It's blatantly unfinished, in particular because of the attack types. As are most Bethesda games.

The saving grace of Morrowind's combat is that despite being a clunky mess that seems like it is in alpha testing, you can work around it if you know its flaws and limitations. Skyrim has baked in shittiness like the finisher system which really brings down the game. OP had it right, they're all shit, and Morrowind is the only Bethesda game with good and engaging writing, not to mention a cool setting. It's the only Bethesda developed game post Daggerfall that doesn't feel like they were really trying to play it safe.

I actually like Morrowind's 'dice roll' dungeon and dragons style combat but I don't like the chop slash thrust system or at least the way it was implemented in the game. I think Daggerfall implemented it better where you could swing in different directions with your mouse. However in Morrowind you have to move in certain directions to preform chops, slash or thrust attacks. The animations for those attacks also look pretty blocky (almost like Minecraft) It feels clumsy to use and I always just play with 'Always Use Best Attack'. Morrowind's combat has a lack of melee combat feed back indicating a failed swing. However that said, Skyrims combat is barley that much of an improvement, in fact in some ways it is actually worse. It is also even worse then Oblivions combat. Skyrims melee combat is actually more tedious then Morrowind or Oblivions combat that everyone just plays Skyrim as a Stealth Archer anyway because that is the only way Skyrim can be somewhat enjoyable. Morrowind, despite it's barebones combat is actually quite an impressively detailed and fantastic game in other areas.

@@BaldRice Not at all hahaha. I really wish it did lol but that would require remaking all the enemies from scratch with custom animations, attacks and making new mechanics then rebalancing the entire game to even work right, AT LEAST. What would be awesome is Dark Messiah based combat and physics modernized with features inspired by the soulsborne series and heavily modded skyrim, but it isn't likely to happen ever unfortunately as you would require a rework almost the entire game to make sense. I hope openmw gets there one day, sure would be cool to play like that in morrowind with VR and online with friends. I Think vanilla morrowind combat is conceptually cool being based on tabletop games but for me isn't actually fun or rewarding and just leads to cheesing to save time on the grind then being overpowered for the rest of the game.

Ive broken down the pro's to all the combat systems in Morrowind, Oblivion, And Skyrim. This is actually something I thought of a lot, and each combat system has its pros. Keep in mind that some combat systems are restricted because of the game engine they were built in *cough cough* Skyrim. But anyways heres the pros of each one Morrowind: Can become god, custom spell crafting, superman-like abilities, skooma, and spears. Can also use a 2 handed, a shield, and magic simultaneously. Oblivion: Can use a One handed sword, a shield, and magic simultaneously. Goofier physics provide you with the benefit of launching enemies 100's of meters on occasion. Skyrim: One of the most limited, You can only use a sword, and a shield/magic/sword in offhand. The bow combat seems to be where the game outshines the rest, especially when considering if an enemy has arrows in their hide, and you bash them, the arrow damage gets thrown on top of bash damage. Unfortunately, with this game once you become powerful it basically just becomes a hack n slash with 24/7 execution scenes. Thats my contention of all 3 games.
