Mortal Kombat is the definition of a movie that "Understood the Assignment." They knew exactly who they were making it for. From the Opening scream it's like the movie saying to the audience "Yeah, we know what you like!"
@DarkChaos87

There were only 3 games before MK that were made into movies. Super Mario Bros. Double Dragon. Street Fighter. There wasn't really an "assignment," for it being the fourth video game adaptation. The next video game adaptations are: Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Wing Commander. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. Resident Evil. Lara Croft: Cradle of Life. But! The director of MK, also did: RE, RE:Afterlife, RE:Retribution, RE:Final Chapter, and Monster Hunter. Also: I'm not counting Televised films (like Pokémon: Mewtwo Returns), only Theatrical.

These fights never get old. Real martial artists casting as the MK characters was the best decision. No special effects, everyone were really fighting. Even Johnny did his own stunts mostly though he was an actor who had never been in a fighting movie. The set designs were amaizing! The Temple, Scorpion's Lair, the room where Kano ate the chicken. So much thanks to Paul Anderson for being so engaged and putting his soul into every detail. Maybe that's why MK will never get old and will always be loved by fans (even without R ratings).

"A handful of people on a leaky boat are gonna save the world?" "Exactly! The essence of Mortal Kombat is not about death, but life. Mortal men and women defending your own world." Sure you can nitpick this movie to death. But for everything they get wrong, they get ten things right. Yes it is PG-13, however the Johnny Cage vs Scorpion and Liu Kang vs Reptile are the best fights out of all the great fights in this movie (see below). Kano was a Japanese-American assassin in the game, but became an Australian brawler after this movie because of Trevor Goddard's fun performance. The CGI does indeed look bad, but Goro is practical and holds up to this day. The casting is on point 100%, in my opinion. Fun Fact: The film's soundtrack went platinum in less than two weeks. Kombat Location Location Fact: The Thailand locations were so remote they were only accessible by boat. The cast, crew, and equipment had to be transported by long canoes. An outhouse was built in a secluded area near the set so that the crew didn't have to make constant trips to and from the mainland. Missed Kombat Cameo Fact: Steven Spielberg, an avid fan of the Mortal Kombat series, was set to make a cameo appearance as the director in Johnny Cage's (Linden Ashby) first scene but scheduling conflicts forced him to back out. Nonetheless, the "director" character (Sandy Hilberg) in this scene does resemble Spielberg, likely as a homage to the missed cameo. Best Kombat Fact: The film was originally due for a May 1995 release, but was pushed to August after test screening audiences loved what they saw, but thought there weren't enough fights. Extensive reshoots were done to extend the Johnny Cage (Linden Ashby) vs Scorpion (Chris Casamassa) fight, as well as add in the Liu Kang (Robin Shou) vs Reptile (Keith Cooke) fight. In the original cut of the film, Johnny Cage was supposed to defeat Scorpion with the shadow kick in the forest as opposed to being sucked into a portal created by the latter. As for the Reptile scene, it originally ended with his reptilian form being sucked into the gargoyle body (as seen in the final cut), but not actually morphing into the green ninja. Basically this implied that the gargoyle had become his tomb and no actual fight took place. Ironically, these two fights are considered to be the best of the film, most likely because Robin Shou was the exclusive fight choreographer for the reshoots as opposed to the credited choreographer, Pat E. Johnson. For these fights, Shou used wire-work martial arts techniques that he had employed as a stuntman in Hong Kong. Although these techniques became mainstream following the release of The Matrix (1999), Mortal Kombat (1995) was actually the first big Hollywood film to use them.

A movie whose creators fully understood the assignment. The soundtrack is even more legendary than the film itself, as it got a lot of people into electronic music -- including me! "Halcyon+on+on", the song that plays over Liu and Chan's reunion, is one of the most famous tracks by one of the legendary bands of electronic music, Orbital. Orbital is a pair of brothers, and they're still making music! I was a fan of their second-most-recent album, Monsters Exist, but their peak was arguably the three-album period covering Snivilization (1994), In Sides (1996), and The Middle of Nowhere (1999). They have an incredible talent for taking the listener on an emotional journey in each song, despite the near-total absence of lyrics. "Control", the techno song that plays during the Reptile v Liu Kang fight, is a collaboration between Juno Reactor and Traci Lords. Juno Reactor is another legendary act in electronic music, especially for their early work in the Acid Trance / Goa Trance subgenre. Traci Lords is an adult film star who dabbled in music and acting. She plays one of the vampires in Blade, and her collaborations with Juno Reactor made it into several movie soundtracks, including this and the forgotten 90s sci-fi film "Virtuosity". When she's not collaborating with Juno Reactor, her music is... okay, I guess. But those four tracks she did with Juno Reactor are each incredible in their own way. KMFDM, the band who created "Juke Joint Jezebel" (the song for Sonya v Kano), is a German techno-industrial band with a long history. I bought a copy of their album Symbols thanks to this soundtrack, and I still cherish it. Music from the industrial band Stabbing Westward also shows up at several points in the movie, but their songs didn't make it onto the soundtrack. The actual Mortal Kombat theme, "Techno Syndrome", was created by a band called The Immortals. Before the movie, they made "Mortal Kombat: The Album", which was sold via mail-order advertisement screens built into the Mortal Kombat II arcade game. The Immortals were somewhat famously a side-project band by Lords of Acid. Lords of Acid is... um, don't listen to their music when small children are around. (I saw them live at DNA Lounge in SF a few years back!)

The soundtrack was (and is) great, the Traci Lords track got me to look for more music by Juno Reactor/Ben Watkins. His album "Beyond The Infinite" is one of my all-time favourite trance records. I had an obscure early release of his, "Luciana" (a collaboration with Alex Paterson of The Orb) which was a bit too ambient for my tastes so I ended up selling it on eBay. It went for quite a bit more than I expected - the winning bidder actually emailed me to thank me for selling it, apparently it was really rare and he'd been looking for it for years. I didn't want to tell him I found it in a used record shop for £5! 🤣

The best video game based movie adaptation ever! Even modern MK movies can't compete with it. Sure, there is no gore and blood and stuff like that, but this movie is about good story and great action scenes. It's about presentation and about a heart and soul of the series. This is what Mortal Kombat should be, not just in terms of movie adaptation but in terms of video games too. And this is why many people and fans still loves this movie, because it delivers. And as a fan of Mortal Kombat from been 6 years old and now nearly a 30 years old, I can say with clear mind that I'm proud that we have such amazing movie. The only thing that I wish is to see WB and NRS make another successful MK movie like this one but as twice as better, bigger and with incredible action scenes. Sure, 2021 reboot movie is good but it is not even close to top the success of 1995 movie. By the way, my favorite fight from 1995 movie is Johnny Cage vs Scorpion. Not because of how cool and powerful it is, but also of the soundtrack. That's right, I'm a metalhead, and the track that you can hear in that scene is Zero Signal by Fear Factory metal band. I love that track so much that I can just make it play in my head instantly, with all of the vocals and stuff. That is how much I love it! Also, you guys should watch TV series called Mortal Kombat Conquest. It's a prequel to 1995 movie about Great Kung Lao and his friends. Many familiar characters are there but then again there is many more new characters. So yeah, go check it out, and I'm telling you, you will not regret it. It is maybe on the same level as 1995 movie, despite it been TV show.

About the filming location, the temple from the opening and closing scenes are located in Ayutthaya city in Thailand. And if you will be able to travel there, it is still there and more than available to visit. I know for sure that it was possible to visit it few years ago, probably you can do that now too. As for sequels, there was a direct sequel to this film with some cast returning (Liu Kang and Kitana are played by the same actors. Sonya Blade was recast. Johnny Cage was recast too. Raiden unfortunately was recast, Christopher Lambert wanted to return but he thought script was bad and didnt sign the contract.) The sequel called Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Unfortunately the production company decided to go the very greedy way and released this film with about 70 to 90% of uncompleted special effects and cgi graphics, so in result movie had very bad reviews and was huge fail in the box office. The problem was that the production company didnt want to pay more money to the special effects department for second revision of almost all special effects. The movie itself is not that bad, and actually have a lot of beautiful locations and different sets just like the first film. A lot of fights in this film are actually very good. And there is a lot more characters this time, Shao Kahn, Raiden, Liu Kang, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade (in this movie she actually have a lot of different fights and even one cool fatality) Cyrax, Smoke, Noob Saibot, Jax (he had a lot of fights too) Kitana (this time she also have more fights), Sindel, Meleena, Baraka, Motaro, Sheeva, Nightwolf, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Ermac, Rain and Jade, few of this characters here are only for cameo though. So, do i recommend this film? I honestly like it for fights, locations and that it continue the story of the first film. So, if you can sit though some very bad cgi and special effects here and there, im sure you can have fun and enjoy it. This sequel come out in 1997. Great reaction guys, all the best! 😎

@@maplenutsreact the sequel also suffers from very bad writing, not the fun cheese kind like the first one, but just bad. Story is also bad.. honestly, i'd sooner skip it. Speaking as a huge fan f the franchise. Probably safer to go with the Fox Kids animated show(yes it exists) and it follows the first movie's timeline more or less

I played it on an old gaming system years ago too. A small warning, "Mortal Kombat 2: Annihilation" does have some small recasting's. It is still a lot of fun, and is recommended! Great reactions to the original Mortal Kombat film, Kids!!!🎬👏👏👏👏

Fun Fact: not sure if you knew this, but Johnny Cage was originally supposed to be played by Jean Claude Van Damme, but he turned it down to play Guile in Street Fighter. Johnny Cage's character was actually inspired by Van Damme. I love the mortal kombat and street fighter and wwe games. Im a say my favorite fighting games right now are the new MK1 and another fighting game called Shaolin vs Wu Tang, a bad ass game with a bunch of known Martial Artist.

When it comes to the effects, you always have to remember that they are also 30 years old and they were really very good for their time. I even have a memory of seeing it with my father. On a weekend in autumn. Thanks for the reminder. Greetings from Germany PS: Check out American Ninja, The Abyss, Grounddog Day, Ghostbusters (1984), Psycho... all Good Films from the Past.

Bridgette Wilson was really good in this, she was also in Last Action Hero and Billy Madison. Her husband is Pete Sampras, the former tennis pro. Only Robin Shou and Talisa Soto came back to do the second film, Sonya was recast and it was a smart move by Wilson to not do the sequel. Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa was excellent as always in this, he's been in tons of stuff, so he can adjust his acting for whatever role he is given.

Have to disagree that Bridgette Wilson was good in this - Last Action Hero, absolutely. She was very funny in that. She just doesn't have any fight training in this and it's too obvious - the fight with Kano looks ridiculous. She's still fun in her non-fight scenes though, especially with Johnny.

The reason the video game Kano has an accent is because he had an accent in this movie. Thats how big an effect this movie had on the series. Similarly in mk11 we got the skins of Johnny Cage, Raiden and Sonja Blade from this movie. And before that they brought Shang Tsung into the game to reprise his role.

The recent MK Movie is defo based on the more recent games which is also good but you cannot compare this one tonthe reboot so to speak . Also who agree's goro in this movie is far better than the CGI goro in the reboot ????

The old MK games have a slight goofy sense of humor that they captured here perfectly! The whole thing's supposed to be tongue in cheek and not to be taken too seriously. I guess a minor criticism is that there isn't any ultra voilent "fatalities" in the movie...but the martial arts make up for it and its beautifully edited as well.
