This film has a wonderful self aware humour to itself which makes it easy to like. It's most evident in the Johnny Cage character who thinks the whole thing is as ridiculous as the audience, which quickly gets the audience on his side. Raiden also has a great comic touch.

A very faithful and inspired adaption of the MK game. I think its definitely a cult classic. Even Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa who plays Shang Tsung has reprised the role in the latest game MK Aftermath and he is superb. A great villain helps make a movie memorable and he certainly was. This was one of my favorite movies as a teen, but as I got older I didn't go back to it much. I agree that a lot of the CGI effects have not held up well at all. Honestly, some (like Reptile) weren't even that great when it came out. I think if it had more practical effects, it would hold up better today. I do feel the story is fine for what it is though--it captures the essence of the game very well which I think is important for this type of movie. Shame the follow-up was so.. bad in comparison.

The original screenplay for the film was more faithful to the game, in that it had graphic violence and strong language making it a R rated script. However, the deal that the producers had with New Line Cinema included that they deliver a PG-13 movie to keep the film accessible to the target audience (mostly teenagers). For this film, Linden Ashby trained in Karate and Tae Kwon Do. Ashby had practiced martial arts before he was cast in the role. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa who's Japanese American played Shang Tsung who's Chinese. Jean-Claude Van Damme turned down the role of Johnny Cage to do Street Fighter (1994). The character in the games was allegedly originally based on him.

The only thing I was disappointed was the guy who played Raiden, they tried to make him funny which he wasn't, instead they should of kept him more serious. I did love the soundtrack, mainly bought if for MK theme song and other electronic tracks on it. After few months of listening to it metal bands also grew on me, especially Fear Factory, Gravity Kills, Bile, GZ/R and Napalm Death. I do own all 3 MK soundtracks Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat: More Kombat, (that came out between the 2 films) and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (great soundtrack shitty sequel movie).

On the topic of the best videogame adaptation though, I'm probably in a very tiny minority but I loved Warcraft. I REALLY enjoyed what they did with Super Mario Bros. Street Fighter's only saving grace was Raul Julia Mortal Kombat was alright(and yes, the music was kick-ass), but they should have made it more violent and bloody. Part 2 was hilariously bad! And I'd kick anyones ass at Tekken!
Movie was cheesy but atleast it's more faithful to the videogame.

If the SFX aged better, this would be a more solid flick. It actually works overall.

I'm not ashamed to say that I love this film. It was solid, the cinematography and set design were great, and the fights were very well choreographed. The humour landed every time as well, and there are some genuinely quotable lines. Linden Ashby really stole the show, and Trevor Goddard was amazing as Kano (I still laugh every time he does his chuckle). A few things bugged me, like Scorpion's spear being organic, and they missed a beat by not casting Cynthia Rothrock as Sonya (especially as her China O' Brien co-star Keith Cooke was Reptile). All that is forgivable though, becasue the film is just a great looking slice of entertainment, and for basically being a re-skinned version of Enter The Dragon, it has enough of its own charm and style to really work, and work very well.

I'm one of those "fans" of the Resident Evil movies! Why, you may ask? Because they're fun to watch.

While this movie is far from good, it is still one of the few video game to movie adaptations that is both good and fairly loyal to the source material. If anything this movie has an iconic soundtrack that pretty much any MK fan knows by heart.

Kind of interesting how this movie influenced the later games as well. Trevor Goddards portrayall of Kano pretty much became how Kano would look and act like nowadays . Not to mention its still one of my favorites parts of the movie albeit its just very brief . Probably main reason Kano became my favorite MK character and the one i use the most when i play a MK game. Sad Goddard died in 2003 :( .

An addition to those of us who didn't grow up in the largest or most cosmopolitan cities/areas (such as my self watching this in New Mexico.) The soundtrack introduced a lot of us to different forms of electronic music most of us had never heard about. While everybody liked the main theme simply because it's so catchy and exciting, the industrial stuff was the thing easiest to latch on to. Rock being the huge thing that it was in the United States. My brother, friends and I were all mesmerized by Halcyon+On+On, however, and we went on to discover a lot more because of it.

One of my old college professors worked for Midway. The name Sub-Zero is programming lingo. The array that held that character was array[0], hence the name. :) The more you know!
