Rinaldo Alessandrini conducts the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and the Radio France Choir performing Morten Lauridsen's O magnum myst. Excerpt from the Christmas concert performed at the Radio France Auditorium on 22 December 2018.
For over half a century, the American composer Morten Lauridsen has dedicated himself to choral music. From 1994 to 2001, he was the composer in residence for the Los Angeles Master Chorale, performers of many of Lauridsen's works. One of the composer's most celebrated works is the motet O Magnum Mysterium, inspired by the text of a sung response from Catholic liturgy during during the traditional monastic nighttime liturgy of the Matins on Christmas day: a secular prayer from a sublime poem that inspired countless composers from Palestrina to Poulenc.
This bewitching work radiates a profound feeling of peace, offering a peaceful meditation upon the pastoral image of the animals surrounding their Lord in manger.
