Gringo here. Growing up poor was hard. I didnt have a ghetto I had trailer parks and low income housing on the edge of the city. Hip hop always spoke to me because while my skin color is different. Ive seen a lot of the same stuff, been insulted for our economic status, witness, used, and sold weed to help pay bills. Mos Def always helped me remember that our fight isnt against one another but the people doing everything they can to leagally rob us.

CJ Some of my facts may be off but back in the day, the govt gave “Freeway” Rick Ross crack so he could distribute it into the low-income neighborhoods and ghettos. This sparked an epidemic that saw many African Americans die or get put in prison. That’s why Mos Def mentions the high population of African Americans. Crack was used as a way to regulate the black population by making them addicted and having them kill each other off or die from substance abuse, or by giving police a reason to lock em up.
