" Your character has two diagrametically opposite facets, courage bordering on the lunatic, offset and balanced by profound tactical and strategic intelligence." What a military leader and equally skilled at the diplomatic level too.

He was once one of Orde Windgate's students. Orde Windgate, a British Major General, is buried in Arlington National Cemetary. Orde Windgate was a young officer in the Mandate in the pre-World War II era. You could say that he was one of the officers who would create what we know as Special Forces. He came up with the idea of reprisal. fighting at night and Unit 101. Things that to this day the IDF excels at. Moshe Dayan was by far not a perfect person, but he sure knew how to defend his country. Oh, and Ariel Sharon was in the same unit with Dayan. Another bigger-than-life IDF General.

I know this channel is supposed to show Israel and its history in a good light, but in this video some criticism of Dayan’s actions would’ve been in order. Mazar’s quote about him seeing with his one eye “more than ten professional archeologists” is alright if only archeology was an Indiana Jones type of activity. It’s not, and when surveying a site what often matters more than the actual artifacts is the context, i.e. where exactly was the artifact in relation to everything else on site, how deeply was it buried, etc. Dayan may have dug up many pretty objects for us to look at but thanks to his actions we have lost much data about ancient Israelite/Canaanite history irrecoverably. Please don’t gloss over such actions with things like “yippee he was a real life pirate!”

It was more than simply the eye patch. That's part of it. Not so much that the eye patch made him reknown, but from how it came about and the aftermath of it. He was a soldier, in what was then Palastine fighting Vichy French under command of the English army. One day, he looked through a pair of binoculers to assess the ground situation when suddenly a bullet came through one of the binocular lenses and into his eye socket leaving him with only one eye. Being thrown into that situation he did not give up and proved himself capable as a military leader. He eventually became the top commanding general of Israel and thereafter retired from the military. In 1966 just a week before the 6 day war started, he was in Vietnam supposedly as a war correspondent. However, it sounds more like a clandestine mission for him to observe the situation and give a report on his assessment of the war to the American command. He was called back to Israel because there was the dire situation of war looming. Again, the eye patch did distinguish him, however, the main point I'm making is, as a military leader, he had a way of instilling his personality on those around him which makes a military unit cohesive. This is the reason why he was suddenly interjected as Minister of Defense, just one day before the 6 day war broke out. In short, the Dayan effect imbued troops.

Ezer Weizman would disagree with you, he flew Dayan by helicopter to Jerusalem after it was taken by Israeli paratroopers under Mordecai Gur. There were bullets still flying around and when the soldiers saw Dayan in the helicopter they almost jumped into it. Weizmans words were that " I knew then who the leader was in Israel. You see Dayan had an effect on soldiers by his brilliance, personal courage in the battlefield, he made men believe in themselves. He was always around where the bullets were flying.

No one has as strong claim to their country than Israel. - 3000y history, also documented in the paper. - They have fought for their indipendence - And they bought also legally lands with money,. - + other countries wanted the Jewish state. Arabs living in Israel didnt have national identity. They felt they belong to the same great arab comminity with the neighbouring countries. Only After Israel indipendency they took the flag. Roman commander who occupied Israel named the land first Palestine ( reminding them from the old enemies Philistines that were not there anymore, ( they were uncirumcised also unlike arabs ) ) Palestine had e.g Jewish orchestra, people lived there mixed. "The Palestine Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1936 under the leadership of Bronislaw Huberman. Huberman, a violinist, at first envisioned an international center for the arts, but instead focused on developing a critically acclaimed symphony orchestra. Conditions in Europe had become such that the orchestra could serve as a haven for persecuted Jewish musicians. Many immigration certificates became available, as the orchestra could provide employment for the refugees. The new immigrants themselves provided fresh talent and energy for cultural pursuits in the yishuv. " Land was in horrible state and started to bloom only after hard work of the Jews that setteled there.
