I'm off the day. This phrase can be used. It's my favourite set phrase. No one can indicate it. Why no posting as a comment that I'm off the day ? One Pattern English by Japanese might represent somewhat in lines.
I am on a day off today、 とかはニュアンス的に通じそうですけど、使ったりはしないですか?

That makes sense. We tend to skip some words in talking. That's why Japanese words are put into English directly, it sometimes happens that there are something strange in the way of grammars.

Americans speak slower than British speakings. If you listen to Japanese and Japanese speaking media all the time, you would feel faster for his talks sure.

『日本人が海外のホテルで、Call me Taxi, pleaseとフロントの人に言ったのに いっこうに、タクシーを呼んでくれなかった。そこで、1,2分経って、フロントの人に、 繰り返し言ったら「わかったよ。タクシーさん」とうんざりされた。』 という恥ずかしい日本人の例として聞いたことを思い出しました。 これは、I am a Taxi.と同じくらいおかしいということ。 実は、Are you day off next Saturday?とアメリカ人の友人に聞いたことを思い出して 変な汗が出てきました。 Are you day off? も同じ理由で、おかしい言い方だったのですね。

とても為になる動画でした。確かに"I"を主語にしたくなりますよ。"Today is my day off, so I can go out somewhere with my kid!"という風に”today”を主語にしてもナチュラルに聞こえますか?

いつもこの動画にはお世話になってます。 今日のトピックスで思い出したことがあります。 大昔、まだほとんどが中学生になって初めて英語に触れる時代に、1年生の授業でI am~という構文をを習った時の話。 クラスメートが大きな声で、I am an umbrella と答えて、先生から「お前が傘だったりしないんじゃ!!」と怒られて教室中が大笑い。 それ以来、I am~の使い方は気をつけてますが、ぼ~っとしてるとやっちゃいますね。 改めて勉強になりました。

I’m day offは確かに変ですね。変身かぁ...おもしろ!!😂ちなみに私はIhave a day off today.もしくは、My company is closed today.と言ってました。で、私の都合で休みを取った場合は I take a day off. にしてました。

Arthurさん、こんにちは。今日も興味深い動画をありがとうございます。 さて、日本人が「I’m day off today.」と言ってしまう原因は、Arthurさんが言っているように「日本語構造の問題」と「日本語を英語に直訳する日本人英語学習者の問題」ですが、「日本の英語教育が原因」ではありません。 日本の英語教育では一番初めに「I’m ~=私は~です。」と教えますが、その後「be動詞の使い方」として「A is B(A be B)」は「A = B」と文法(英語の文構造)を教えます。これを理解していないと高校受験・大学受験で高得点が取れないからです。 なので「I’m day off today.」と言ってしまう日本人は、学校での英語が得意でなかった方の可能性が高いと考えます。 因みに、私(around 60 yrs)が受けた古い英語教育よりも、今の日本の英語教育は更に良くなっていると思います。 P.S. Natsumi’s smile was so attractive when you said “You’re smiling is so different from normal, it’s very strange for me”. Then you two guys look so happy. I like that. Thank you.

Thank you! I started studying in 2004 and around 2007 I stopped studying and made friends with Japanese people, read Japanese books etc. the key is to use it.

day off って表現を使ったことがないですね 今日私休みなんですって取引先に伝えるときは I'm off work today. って言ってました。
地元だけのスラングかわかりませんが。 僕の周りだと「私は今日休みです」を伝える時は "I'm off" あるいは "I'm off today" とも言いますね。

後半の話は勉強になったんですが、4:37までの話は要らないと思います。私は元々I have a day off today.しか知らなかったので、聞く時やそれ以外の表現について知りたかったのですが、間違った表現を前半に連呼されることでかえって後半の表現が頭に入ってきませんでした。 3の表現の説明は駆け足でしたし、間違った表現に尺を使うのでなく、正しい表現に尺を使って頂いた方がいいと思いました。

Couldn’t you also say “I’m off today.” Or “I’m taking today off.”? “I’m day off.” does sound strange, but if you say “I’m a day off”. couldn’t it mean that you are off by one day? Like you thought it was Monday, but it was actually Sunday (or Tuesday). Anyways it’s a good video. It made me think about differences in Japanese & English.

I Can say my day off is every day or working day Now. しかしこの動画は日本人が日本語を見直す切っ掛けにもなって面白いですね。 日本語のネイティブスピーカー無意識に使ている""~は"、~が"などのニュアンスも言われてみるとトピックとかサブジェクトとか改めて気づかされて日本語の勉強にもなるので。 また日本語と英語の比較から、今の日本人が使っている標準的な日本語は多分明治時代以降に英語などの外国語の翻訳が基本となってできているのだろうなと想像できます。 だからそういう歴史的な背景とか、ただ単に覚えた単語を繋いで使ったりするから、日本人が"I am day off" みたいな的外れな表現を使ってしまうのだろうなと思いました。 そうすると江戸時代までの日本人はどんな日本語使っていたのか逆に興味が湧いてきました。😄
