Bolshaya Polyanka.
Bolshaya Polyanka was part of the road from Veliky Novgorod to Ryazan. It began at the Stone Bridge, and in the 17th century it reached only Staromonetny Lane. Further along stretched the fields, which later gave the street its name.
In the 15th-16th centuries, at the beginning of the street there was a settlement of “kadashs” or coopers - artisans who made barrels and tubs.
At the end of the 16th century, the Skorodom fortress was built along the route of the current Garden Ring, and Bolshaya Polyanka became one of three rays - Pyatnitskaya, Ordynka, Polyanka - connecting at the Serpukhov Gate.
In the 17th century, a linen production facility was located at the beginning of the street and Kadashevskaya Sloboda became a “khamovnaya” - weaving center. It was one of the largest, richest settlements in Moscow. At the same time, at the beginning of Bolshaya Polyanka, the Kosmodemyanskaya Church was built (destroyed in the 1930s) and the street was named Kosmodemyanskaya. Here, beyond Kadashi, archers settled in the 17th century. One of the parish Streltsy churches was the Church of Gregory of Neocaesarea, built in 1667-1679. The temple, magnificently decorated with tiles and a tented church, is still the main decoration of the street today. Behind the Streltsy courtyards there were Cossack settlements. The memory of them is preserved in the names of the lanes adjacent to Bolshaya Polyanka. Here were also the courtyards of the Moscow nobility: the courtyard of boyar Repnin, steward Poltev.
After Peter I liquidated the Streltsy settlements, Polyanka was settled by merchants, minor nobles and officials.
In the 18th century the street was named Bolshaya Polyanka. After the revolution of 1917, it was called Soviet for a short time (1918-1922).
Today Polyanka has a length of 1 km 125 m and runs from the Maly Kamenny Bridge to Dobryninskaya Square.
