Its America, people joke "don't let infants have access to arms without adult supervision or training", because we are all taught how to safely use them since young children. But lets say a child does get it, the good news is most shotguns in the US are 28" barrels, the distance from the trigger to the tip of the barrrel is about 35" (about 3ft), its actually really difficult for a child to injur themselves unless they are trying to on purpose using their toes to push the trigger down (minimum height would need to be about 40" to bend your neck to move your head in front), so its really much safer than handguns which is why children are taught to use rifles first (they are also much easier to use). Also depending on the weight it may be another challenge (many adult females significantly struggle lifting a shotgun, which is kind of pitiful but its why its often not a great choice for females either, not that I haven't shot skeet with an 8 year old girl in our 4-H youth club, but you probably need to be at LEAST 5 years old to be walking around with it and by that age you probably know how to safely use it).

It is a nice 2 piece bent metal welded with bracing in the mid section and finished well enough. I think it should have pads so it doesn't scuff the finish of the items being placed on it, but really for $40 who else is going to make it? Sure I could, but besides adding pads to it, I don't see much improvement that it needs and that's not terribly expensive plus most people don't have a welder (I do of course, but metal is EXPENSIVE! especially when you aren't just buying random metal scraps from the junkyard at scrap iron prices)

I agree with the thought of this product being a *hard no* for people with children. When I was younger my mom had a gun for when she had to take my little brother to his dad's farm for visitation, because she was worried he might get violent with her again. But, she wanted to make sure we couldn't hurt our selves with it, so she kept the cylinder locked with a gun lock, in a locked gun case, on the highest shelf of the pantry, with both keys stored in two hidden locations, and the ammo was stored in her closet. There was no way we could get at any of it. If you have a shotgun rack on the bed and shells in your nightstand, anyone who has access to your room has the ability to handle your shotgun, and children don't know the risks involved, it's just a bad idea.
@Pepe-ts9ec

I think it’s situation dependent. My father introduced me to firearms at a very early age. First, I learned gun safety with empty firearms and the chamber exposed. Then, I learned how to clean them. Then I finally got to shoot for the first time. By the time I was at the range for the first time, safety was of no issue. When I joined the Marine Corps I soon realized that 18 year olds who have never shot a gun in their life are more dangerous than 7 year olds who have shot multiple times.
@Scorch052
2 жыл бұрын
@@Pepe-ts9ec No. There is literally no scenario where a bedside shotgun rack is anything but an utterly retarded concept. If your point is simply that some kids can be taught how to handle guns safely, no shit, but that doesn't resolve the issue of needing to have the firearm secured so it isn't easily stolen or misused. We certainly have more than enough examples in the news of kids who knew all too well how to handle a firearm, and had parents or relatives who didn't mind leaving a gun easily accessible to anyone in the house.

This looks like something you could make yourself within one hour after a trip to the hardware store, but they're charging $39.95 plus shipping and handling for it. I realize that's not the point, but I wonder how much overlap there is between Back Up customers and people who claim Americans lack the "get up 'n go, do it yourself" kind of attitude our forefathers had.

Lol my older cousin had a "bed rack" like this but then his grandson was trying to climb up the bed to sit with him and one of the hooks broke so they're not that sturdy. He was worried about replacing it and it breaking again so instead he bought a whole new bed frame to get one with drawers underneath and that's what he keeps all his guns in now. He's even got custom cut display foam and everything (gotta make sure your guns are tucked in for nighty night I guess) Edit to add cuz the replies brought up good points: we've all told this story so much over the years it's almost a family tradition but it's *only* funny because nothing bad happened and the first thing he did after getting the bed was install a lock on the drawers. Seeing Aiden laying on the floor next to a firearm, even if it was unloaded, was a major wakeup call for him that if kids were going to be visiting the house again he needed to start locking his weapon collection up again.
