The first punch was bad. He hit a defenceless, unconscious man on the floor, with the second. Lucky not to be charged indeed. I read a follow up article where he was incredibly remorseful about it, and did learn a lesson the hard way. But the assault had a hugely negative impact on the other player. Lance Hohaia. Very nasty incident. Thankfully not very common at the highest level.

@@tannerannichiarico7255 red carded 2 minutes into the Grand Final, and lost the Grand Final for his team. I want to also say he got sacked as well, but I’m not sure. Hohaia had to retire early from Rugby, and still has vision problems to this day from it.

To get a little colored card shown at you and be removed from the game is NOT the hard way to learn a lesson from an act that could easily carry jail time and/or heavy fines had it been done in... well any other scenario than on the field really.

The Ben flower one always confuses me. It's only 2 minutes into the game. To act like that 2 minutes in he must have done some big pre-hame psych ups. Yes he's annoyed about not getting the try but....2 minutes into a grand final

Nothing confusing about it, Hohaia tried to obstruct Flower, got knocked over. Then attacked Flower with an elbow to the head from behind. Had Flower not thrown the second punch, both players would have probably got the red, Hohaia's indiscrection just seems to get forgotten about.

Watch the original video. Hohaia first nudges him within the first 5 seconds, then tries to obstruct him and when he fails, he tries to go in with his elbow. That and the frustration of missing a try prompted him to do what he did.

They don't get beaten that often but when they do, mothering Jesus, the excuses are beyond ridiculous and in my opinion disrespectful. No matter where you are from or what team you support, any fan would want their team to play their best and win but apparently according to a lot of NZ fan's, that entire way of thinking is outrageous. A true fan in my honest opinion, is a fan that accepts the good and the bad and call player's out when they should be for whatever reason

I'm not sure that Rugby fans, of which I'm definitely one, should be clapping ourselves on the back here. Some of those tackles were utterly, utterly reckless and the perpetrators should have been banned for years. I remember Peter Clohessy being banned for 6 months for an egregious head stamp. How often are punishments like that meted out these days?

The amount of times I've had kids screaming and throwing fits after I've sent them off for doing something stupid on the field like picking someone half their size up and dumping them on their head right in front of me. (Qualified referee btw, in case that wasn't obvious)

I was not a good enough tackler to ever deliver a tackle in that sort of category, but I can imagine rugby players are more accepting of the punishment due to what consequences it can have. Perhaps

Indeed, even though some tackles are reckless. Still in football you notice that even when they're standing on the feet of the opponent they still come complaining and pull this face like "me? It can never be me". It's a physical sport and it can get rough and that's accepted but at least accept the punishment.

I'm guessing at the highest levels, refs know the players pretty well; sometimes it's a rush of blood to the head or a niggle earlier in the match that makes the offender feel justified in such violent actions and the ref can if not sympathise, can understand. Woods stamping, Stander taking the player out are inexcusable and could change a player's life.

What is soooooo clear in all these videos is yes many of them are quite violent and inexplicable, however all the players respect the ref. There is no arguing back as you see in football. Usually the players just politely admit the messed up and gently Hogg off the field.

Agreed. I watch for example at 2:47 and think had I seen this sort of thing anywhere other than a UFC match the person would be arrested for assault. There has to be some sort of clause in the rules of the game where people are immune from breaking the law. I find it difficult to believe anyone would watch that clip and not think that this person is trying their best to do as much damage or even murder the other person. It completely blows my mind that you can do that to someone in a game where fighting is not the objective, and the only consequence is being shown a red piece of card and not being able to play rugby for a comparably short amount of time. If that were a regular person that attack would have killed them, given the force of the strikes and landing on the head. So maybe it's because they are thick-skulled 18 stone rugby players that these kind of assaults are not taken as seriously as the same events happening outside of the sport.

This is proof, to me, that the red card is ineffective. IMO, every one of those incidents merits a ban ranging from 6 months to lifetime. Is it going to take a globally broadcast death on the field of play before this type of shithousery is eliminated for once and for all?. let's not get carried away... it's tempting to look at only some extreme examples and draw conclusions that aren't balanced... but by the same logic we can conclude that traffic lights don't work because they don't stop all traffic accidents in intersections. Red cards are clearly a deterrent work but will not stop ALL infringements... neither will lengthy bans, an eye for an eye or even death penalties. I can guarantee that 99% of red card offenders regret their actions a few seconds later

I mean, 9 minutes of horrible tackles, but you have to remember how many thousands of hours of rugby have been played to make this compilation. The red cards are a deterent, and in recent years especially you can see how the style of rugby has changed, with big hits not being as present in the game in favour of faster play and avoiding penalties.

I'm an Irish fan and I remember thinking at the time that his timing was just very bad. Maybe he could have turned his hip in the air, but he was committed to the block down, IMHO. Also, CJ was probably the cleanest player.

Is the fact that he was 19 actually relevant? It was an awful tackle, worthy of a red card and a ban, but I don't think him being 19 somehow makes it worse. If you're good enough to step on the field at that level, you have to take what everyone else takes. You wouldn't expect players to 'go easy' on a lad just because he's young.

possible stupid question incoming, but can someone explain why the first one was given as a red, i’m a student referee, and thus haven’t had many instances of Red card offences and I agree its at a minimum a yellow card for late etc but i’m curious as to why it was a red, appreciate it seems to be a stupid question but i’d like to hear the thoughts of more experienced refs etc.
