Mexicola is one of the most cold hardy. I am not surprised that it is thriving there.

Hey, do you want to test out my Rootzilla avocado in northern CA? I want to give it to someone so I don’t lose it because my conditions are too cold here for it but it has solid traits as a vigorous rootstock. it’s not sensitive to overwatering and root rot like any others I have tried. Started it as a seedling from a very large thin skinned avocado the size of a large Pinkerton that was likely a Mexican hybrid. Just want someone who’s into avocados to try it out in the real world and not just indoors and greenhouses

Scale has finally got the better of my Washington Navel. Couple days ago I grafted a fairly dry branch onto a healthy lime tree as a last ditch effort to preserve the material.

I forgot where you are located. You definitely get colder Temps than I do here in zone 8a/8b Northeast Texas, but I still haven't gotten brave enough to experiment with too many things by putting them outside in the winter. For some reason I have had a hard time with keeping avocado, but I do have some seedlings going again that I hope to graft to. Lila and Mexicola are on my list of scions to obtain. I will eventually get me some Peruvian Apple cactus to accompany my dragonfruits.

Ever experiment using old school christmas lights and fleece? I've seen it done on citrus trees, during the dead of winter it can be 5 Celsius while tucked in.

I agree, it wasn't minus 9 Celsius in there. I've watched avocado leaf damage carefully at different temperatures. That looks like right about 26 to 27 Fahrenheit type damage to me. (-3 C) If it was even minus 5 Celsius (23 F) I think there'd have been more fully brown leaves on the seedlings. The Reed failing first is not a surprise... Guatemalan heritage tree...

Do you think the trees will recover? I use biocontrol so I might use Aphytis melinus or Lindorus lophanthae in the spring for the scale. I usually order from Natures Good Guys. I ordered predatory mites for spider mites and fungus gnats in my green house.

I planted two Bacon variety in Sutter county and they have grown nearly 20' and have produced very nice crops. I've sprouted 20 seeds here in Ohio and they're doing very well indoors this first year. We'll strategically plant in numerous locations across two counties this coming year.
