Is it actually a bad idea given that so many people were willing to throw millions of dollars at him the first time? Not just the people paying for tickets, but the investors as well. If there's anything I've learned over the past 13 years, people don't want to invest money in things that have basic sustainability, steady-net profits. They want to invest in stupid-moon shots that sound ridiculous promoted by people with pie in the sky egos and sales pitches. If you can't beat them, join them.
@Proserpira

Charlie got the ticket price wrong, as no one had ever been proven to have paid $25'000 for a ticket. It was spread by media and naturally hadn't been fact-checked. The reason so many people got scammed is because the ticket prices were so cheap. Some people managed to only pay $500, and that's for two weeks in the Bahamas including room, food, music festivals and so on. It had big names behind it, and the project didn't show any signs of being a scam right until people showed up and saw the tents.

As bad as Billy is, the fact that this many people didn't even bother to use some simple common sense is staggering. This is akin to the phone call scammers or the "I'm a prince" e-mails that they used to have back in the day. You can't fall for this stuff unless you genuinely turn your brain completely off.

To be fair a lot of pirates were also theater nerds. They would entertain themselves by putting on plays on the upper decks, sometimes hosting mock trials where they recounted the various crimes a crewman had committed. The crewman would plead his case and the crew would decide his "fate."
