It might be controversial, but I still don't understand why contemporary books about normal teenagers having issues with their family, school, friends, or mental illness meet some perfect and amazing cute boys or girls that later love them to death and change their whole lives keep getting published. It's like telling us (teenagers, especially girls since we are the main audiences) that you need another person to change your life, fix your behavior, and solve your own damn problems. I only started reading these types of books this year, and it only took me two tries to realize that these are written so bad. Instead of waiting for a boy who just moved next to your house yesterday to make you feel loved, how about being a mature person and working your way up? Sorry if it sounds harsh, but this is the way I feel. We are portrayed so bad that some people start thinking about teenagers like stupid, ignorant, and materialistic. It's amazing to see Emily as an adult having the same opinion. Thank you. 😄

Han Nguyen I completely agree with you, that's my pet peeve with ya contemporary. I read My Heart and Other Black Holes two years ago and it was all good and nice until the boy came around and magically fixed everything. I felt like throwing the book across the room. NO, that's not how depression goes away, stop telling people they're not enough by themselves and need to be saved and fixed! Hmpf.

I completely agree about the love tropes and how falling in love with a boy will magically fix you. As soon as something like that starts to happen in a book, I'm out. being disabled and gay for girls, I can't say that meeting a cute boy has made me better or y'know...done anything for me. and I agree that it is not healthy at all, it freaks me out how much I used to idealise that as a teenager.

HP and the Cursed Child was so awful. I can see how it'd be a great play to see. It seemed like visually, it'd be impressive. But the story was absolutely awful. It didn't feel like Harry Potter. I agree with what you said about YA. I don't understand why it has to be about a boy accepting the girl for who she is and therefore she can now be okay with who she is. I wish it would be more about finding self-love. A quote I think sums it up well is "Real love is responsibility, compromise, selflessness, being present, and all. Fake love is magic, excitement, false hope, infatuation, and getting high off the potential that another person is going to save you from yourself". Video super en passant :) J'adore voir une Quebecoise avec autant de succes!

I didn't hate HP&TheCursedChild as the rest of the world seems to, but I really can see its problems. However, I went to the play in London at the beginning of the month and it was absolutely amazing! It is so mindblowing that you don't have time to think about character development or whether characters were acting like they normally would do. It was more of a what if story and at the same time very nostalgic. I laughed out loud and cried my eyes out. It was really magic on a stage. So if you ever have the chance to see it, do it. It is worth every single minute of it (and I promise you won't mind the book so much after it). And Scorpius is actually the funniest character in the entire HP universe :) Love your chanel!

I Love Neil Gaiman's story concepts, but for some reason (With 2 exceptions.) I have yet to be able to finish a book/story by him, whether it's for kids or not. I have no interest in giving up yet, but it's kind of frustrating. Was not crazy about 'Girl on the Train' by Paula Hawkins, I didn't like the lead character for various reasons, the story was fairly predictable...it did have some good suspense parts, and it was well written enough that I would willingly read other books by Paula Hawkins. The only other book wasn't one I disliked, it just wasn't what I expected though I do plan on buying the next book when it comes out: Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour bookstore.

Ohhhhhh I just got an illumination about one of my fav books this past year or so: Reboot by Amy Tintera. At first, I was: this is way too weird, but I ended up so into it, I can't wait for the tome2... Even though I like Audrey Retrouvée so far, I kinda agree with you with the boy being the savior and all, but I still really enjoy it... but the fact that we dont know the big trauma, it's annoying... I hate not knowing things, which explain why I always read the last pages first... and i didn't mind the last pages of the curse child so I'll give it a go, even thought I know it won't be as good as the original HP. I really liked Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I don't know whether it is because I am an actor myself but I feel that the main problem people have with it is that plays have to be written to novels. Plays have a time limit (Usually 90 - 120 minutes) whereas books can take whatever time limit they want so they have to fit more into a short space of time plus an interval so there has to be a half-point break in the story as well.

(only because I have a 16 year old little girl in my soul that refuses to grow up) I considered getting that book for us to read/discuss, as my daughter also deals with anxiety, ptsd, and a bit of agoraphobia. But, you are absolutely right. No one else, (love) can fix your problems it helps to have loving relationships, but it is dangerous to assume, a boy/girl can fix all your problems. I look forward to reading a story that accurately represents mental illness and trauma. Perhaps, my daughter and I can write it! ;-)

I have found that no matter how well a book is written, sometimes you just don't like it. I know that may seem strange but it's true for me. I'm not really interested in any of the Hunger Games books. I had read some of the first chapters in the first book. They are very well written, but the premise doesn't appeal to me. Same with Game of Thrones. Perhaps it was because I read sooooo much middle ages stuff back in the day that again, the premise doesn't interest me. However, I would recommend these series to anyone that likes that type of genre. Both series are extremely well done and the characters are fantastic. LOL I'm reminded of 'Watership Down' and how it was all the rage when I was in high school. Everyone was reading it! Again, the writing is absolutely fantastic, but I just could never get into the lives of rabbits. Wind in the Willows though? That was right up my street! LOL It's not that a book is necessarily badly written, it's sometimes the premise is just not appealing.

Talking about Fangirl and Everything, Everything! Those are amazing books but not because of the story [which is kinda cliche] but because of the meaning. Let's use EE as an example: the story is the dull YA love story kind and it bored me but, if we add the thing that she try to find herself in her little bubble, it can get really emotional especially if you are in a bad moment of your life. Fangirl helped me so much when i read it because i was working on a short story for a contest and i thought that i would never finish the story and things like that but the book helped me writing it and i entered the contest (still waiting for the results hahhaha). If you don't like that much the YA love story genere you should try All the bright places by Jennifer Niven because it is just a m a z i n g and If I was your girl. In ATBP the story is so unique and touching and i would recommend it to everybody with mental illnesses. IIWYG is more of a cliche love story but, i don't know if i stressed this how much i want, the meaning is just so good for people that, in that time, are having problems.

I KNOW I'M SUPER LATE TO THIS VIDEO BUT OH GOD FINALLY SOMEONE WHO DIDN'T LIKE "EVERYTHING EVERYTHING" EITHER AND FOR THE SAME REASON AS ME!!! Honestly, the whole "girl's life is terrible - girl meets cute boy - girl's life changes because of boy and is suddenly great" is my most hated trope ever bc it's so harmful! A great video

Especially with horror books, I find that leaving stuff to the imagination helps, not hinders, a story's creep factor. Because as what people say, what we imagine is definitely worse than what we actually see. It may be lazy writing sure, but writers should treat the readers as intelligent, right? Anyways, really enjoying your videos. I just thought I'd like to join in on the discussion 😊

I've wanted to read Ocean at the End of the Lane for a while. All the reviews I've seen are great! Good to hear your opinion. I also hate the "guy changes girl's life" troupe, that's too overrated especially in the present day.

Annihilation has 2 other books in the series, maybe that’s why the story was kind of left open at the end. I haven’t read them but maybe it all ties together?

I have the same issue with Neil Gaiman. I read Coraline, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, The Graveyard Book, but none of them was as good as I imagined. The Graveyard Book was the only "okay" of them. My Most Disappointing Books of this year: - Jojo Moyes: Me Before You - Marie Rutkoski: The Winner's Curse - Sophie Kinsella: Can You Keep a Secret - Jasmine Warga: My Heart and Other Black Holes - Anthony Doerr: All the Light We Cannot See (for me it was too long and boring, but the writting was excellent I can admit)

I didn't like Fangirl either, it was definitely one of the books that disappointed me last year. This year I was disappointed by Chew Vol. 1, Where things come back, The absolutely true diary of a part time Indian, and The knife of never letting go.

LifewithEmilyFox It was so hyped that I was expecting to be blown away as I was with A monster calls and The rest of us just live here, but it was sooooooo unrealistic, lots of tropes I don't enjoy. I think that the plot twist was really cheap and unnecessary. Im going to continue with the series tho. I would say give it a try, hahaha, but it is definitely up to you, it's very dystopian-ish in my opinion.

My most disappointing books were Fangirl, The Sun Is Also A Star (I actually did like Everything Everything though, which was kind of strange for me, since, in essence, they were very similar). Also, every John Green Book I read (besides TFIOS - read that two years ago and despised it. After trying my fourth JG, I realized he wasn't for me). Oh, and Clockwork Angel/Clockwork Prince. It's kind of sad to hear all these people raving about books I hated. I always feel like I missed something...

Emily, I think you are just so beautiful! And I just love you to death, you’re the only youtuber that I watch! we have the exact same preferences. Every book on your shelves I’ve read or is on my TBR. You’re literally the only book tuber I’ve been able to find who matches my style so closely & who mixes both YA & adult fic. Also, love your accent and hearing you say things in French! Btw-it’s usually pronounced uh-nye-uh-lay-shun. (Annihilation) I’m not trying to be a brat, but I know I like knowing when I’m saying something differently than most! Also. I completely agree with you about every book on this list. The only one I didn’t read is the Sophie Kinsella one, but I especially agree about the Gaiman and Vandermeer! I have now read 3 of Gaiman’s books tho and have found that I just don’t like him, but I still feel compelled to try Good Omen’s &/or American Gods. Also, I sorta hated Annihilation! I thought it was sorta on the creepy side but not in a good way! I can see how some people might like it tho.

I've heard that Harry Potter and the cursed child is an amazing play (like the actual stage production) and the bindup of the play doesn't compared. At the same time I read the play as kind of a fanfiction type of thing that wasn't connected to the books since JK didn't actually write it. So that was just my perspective on it.

Dumplin by Julie Murphy.I was hyped about the book when I read the synopsis and I thought I could relate myself to the main character. I thought the character could motivate me in some ways. Turns out the character annoyed me so much and the character demotivated me even more. and I just hate the plot because I don't think the story line is realistic. It took me forever to finish reading it and I'm not even happy when I finished it.

(I understand your opinion completely- this is just me stating mine about the subject).I think having someone in your life that understands you and makes you happy can help with mental illness, definitely. At 15, I suffered from extreme depression and anxiety. Then I met my boyfriend. While some days are still hard, they were easier then usual. He made me laugh and made me happy. And made me realize that I had a lot more to be happy about in my life then I originally thought. At 15, I didn't care about my grades or really have interest in anything. I didn't really have any friends either. The only reason I felt like I had to keep going was because I have two younger siblings who needed me and I loved. My life wasn't perfect and still isn't but when I got with my boyfriend it helped so much. He was also suffering with depression from the loss of his mother. I guess we kind of helped one another. I started caring more and ended up graduating with a great GPA. Now at 22 I'm in a much better place and am honestly so happy with my life, they are days that I feel depression creeping up but it's definitely not even as close to being as bad as it was. While it sounds cliché I'm glad I had my now husband help me when I was younger. (Again I'm not trying to be rude just stating my experience and opinion on the YA contemporary trope :D we all have different opinions and different reading experiences :D. Although I'm not much of a contemporary lover, I guess I can kind of connect with them) ( I also realize that not every high school relationship works out the way mine has)

To be honest it sounds like you're the exception not the rule :) There's a reason people that aren't in a stable place will be recommended to avoid relationships (think AA that have to wait 12 months) simply because they're in a fragile state. Doesn't mean it's not nice to have someone there for you, nor that it won't work out for everyone but in general chances are the relationship won't last and the person will end up at square one or worst!

UGH IKR Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows wrapped up the series. It wrapped up all 7 books, it gave us closure. "All was well" you here that ? All was well. Why did they have to open up the series again. Why? To know that all was well, gave me closure for the series, it made me feel warm and safe? And just calm, to know that Harry, Ron, and Hermione's life weren't shit anymore. Why did they have to make Harry Potter and the Cursed Child?

I haven't read or heard of any of those books... LOL. I don't follow book channels, except yours :) I read a lot of YA books as a teen and I have to say It never gave me the wrong message. I mean that in the sense that I never felt like what I was reading shaped how I thought life around me would look. I just read and gushed and fantasied about whatever it was and it made me happy. That being said... now I'm 24, am married with 3 kids and when I reread some of my favorites they are a tad bit cringe-y lol... like extremely predictable in the way the characters might look or get described. I don't find it as charming lol. I have gravitated away from most of the YA books out there... I'm late to the bandwagon but in 2016 I saw the Harry Potter movies for the first time ever.. proceeded to become obsessed, bought and read all the books, some collectibles etc. I get what everyone is saying about Cursed Child, it wasn't the best but I still read it and bought it. I agree that Fantastic Beasts was AMAZING 😍 anyways... if you haven't already read the Sword of Truth series... I began reading it, I'm on book 5 and it's really good ;)

That's kind of why I want to mention the problematic things I saw - as a teenager I wouldn't have noticed but it could have influence me. Like Twilight, everyone loved it but we didn't necessarily realize that... a guy staring at you all night and basically stalking you isn't cute :P

You aren't alone on fangirl. I didn't like it either probably because I didn't relate to Cath as a main character and I also thought the side characters were one dimensional. Also the fanfiction aspect. I've read tons of great fanfictions and fanfiction on here and this one fell flat for me as well as the betrayal of anxiety because not all people who have anxiety are like that. I have anxiety and I only get that way sometimes when I'm having a really bad episode of it but everyone's anxiety is different and I felt the betrayal of social anxiety was just a textbook case here and didn't offer a realistic viewpoint of it, but maybe that's just me.
