My dog shakes off as we enter our apartment block at the end of practically every walk. But he lives for his walks, it's his absolute favourite to go outdoors. Could it just be that he was so excited to be outside and now he's just releasing the tension from the excitement? ie in this case the stress is a good stress so I'd need to be concerned? I'd think that if he was suffering negative stress that he would show reluctance to go outdoors. Also, thank you for that point about cueing movement behaviours rather than stationary behaviours. It was a light bulb moment for me.

Great tips, as always. "It happened out of the blue" because we ignore those subtle signs of stress!

“, If your dog is looking a lot, you need to intervene. This gives me a question I’ve been wondering quite a bit recently. If the dog is doing this and you can’t pinpoint the stimulus, how can you intervene?

My dog does the whale eye when he has something in his mouth that he doesn't want me to take, like a bone.

This video was so helpful! I used it to notice my puppy was uncomfortable on a walk today and I was able to pinpoint it's because he was hot. He was more reactive than usual also. I noticed he was VERY happy to lay down on the grass to cool off, so he offered behaviors that felt natural at the moment (down, crawl, roll over) that he seemed to think were his idea, but I used them to recapture his attention (so we could get back to the car and get some water and shade).

Great video! I watched it and took my dog for a walk straight after. Right away I noticed lots of yawning and lip licking as I gathered what I needed for the walk. We got to the gate... “sit!” Biggg yawn and more lip licking... on the way to the beach, no visible signs of stress. He is 9 months and I’ve been working on leash reactivity (too happy when seeing other dogs) and he did a great job controlling himself as we walked passed 2 small dogs. As soon as we were past them, body shake! Thank you!

What should I do about my puppies seeming unwillingness to perform "sit" and "down". Everytime he has to sit or lie down he whines, shifts around as if he were uncomfortable, and sometimes gives me the whale eye. It makes me worried that I'm stressing him out but I'm not quite sure why 😅

Thank you and I think the last part, being realistic about what you can expect from your particular dog is super important. I'll be studying my dogs every move.
