Audrey's actually in a sense a victim of her looks and fragility. But no way she's overrated.The Nun's Story, Two for the Road, Wait Until Dark, The Children’s Hour all of them proves she's capable of playing roles that are different from those people often attach to her name. As for Sandler, I think playing a safe bet just proves he's nowhere near the best comedian actors of his generation, let alone actors overall. Long ago I'd say something similar about Jim Carey but then he made Truman's Show and more importantly ESOTSM, a masterpiece in which he showed glimpses of that comedic note that always goes with him, but elevated it to a fantastic level. Sandler could never do that.

The thing about Will Smith is that while I agree that he wants to be a leading man in blockbusters, his choices have in the long run hindered him in that pursuit. If you look at other leading men from the 90s who have had lasting careers (Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Leo DiCaprio, etc.) they've all been willing to take risks and play against type in a way that Will was never willing to do. Because of that, they established a perception that they at least had the ability to play complex characters, which I think even today is key to a long and consistent career as a blockbuster star. If you look at some of the big blockbuster films of the past 2 decades, a lot of them had leading men characters who were vulnerable or in moral grey areas (i.e. the Daniel Craig James Bond movies, Nolan's Batman, Iron Man, Logan, The Bourne series etc.). Even non-franchise blockbusters like Inception, or Tarantino's more recent work have characters who aren't your typical 90s action hero who can do no wrong and always saves the day. Will seems to have missed this, or just isn't willing to break from his 90s persona. IMO, it's why many of his movies that were supposed to be blockbusters were mostly met with 'meh' reactions.

He's also been blessed with the opportunities to play more challenging roles but didn't stick his neck out. Turning down Django (after initially accepting the role) shows he's either got really bad advisors or is just the most unambitious actor in the business.
@yashnigam6

@@highnoon7097 I remember watching Good Time not too long ago, and for some reason it made me think of The Pursuit of Happyness. Both movies are about men who find themselves in a desperate situation and need money fast. Both are about men who are devoted to their family (Will with his son, Pattinson with his brother). Both leading characters use their charisma and charm to navigate the world. But whereas Will's character is constantly noble and always chooses the moral and legal way to get out of trouble, Rob's character is a scumbag who will manipulate, cheat and steal to get what he needs. Anyways, the reason I bring up Good Time is because it's an example of the type of movie Will could have done to show that he can subvert type, while still playing a similar type of character (a charming, confident guy). It's like how Matthew McConaughay subverted the fact that he always plays the same southern guy by still playing a southern dude, but in roles like True Detective and Dallas Buyers Club.

Well, I think that Meryl is so often thought of as GOAT, or close to it, because she can play both Sophie in "Sophie's Choice" and Miranda in "The Devil Wears Prada." She can play Julia Child in one movie, and turn around to play Margaret Thatcher in yet another. She plays in the Charlie Kaufman/Spike Jonez "Adaptation" then turns around and makes the David Hare/Stephen Daldry "The Hours." I mean, come on. And that is simply scratching the surface.

I couldn't agree more. You'll have trouble finding someone like Meryl out there, who has such an extense repertoire of characters and delivers every single time. It is unfair to judge an actor's ability or quality based primarly on their recent role choices. If an actor has proven to be capable, they are, regarless of how safe/unsafe you may think some of their roles are. Nowadays people judge Meryl's quality as an actor as if they expected her to do something that she hasn't done yet, but the thing is... she has already done pretty much everything: that tells us how great of an actor she is indeed.

She can be subtle, she can be over the top, she can be safe, she can take risks. She can do anything. Sophie's Choice was a GAME CHANGER amongst what Hollywood actors could do. Sissy is probably one of my favorite actors as well and she has a lot of respect amongst actors, it's just she hasn't done anything really that great recently, but most people know Carrie and Badlands so... Glenn and Sissy are the two actors that match Streep in my opinion. Actors such as Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon are overrated beyond belief. The older she become the safer? Mamma Mia may be corny film but her taking the role was not risky. Many thought it was a ridiculous casting and she delivered. I have to disagree with Dune not requiring a great actor. The role of Paul Atreides really does require a great actor, even if I don't think Chalamet is that actor, for two reasons. First, is the general reason that you usually need a better than average actor for sci-fi to help with the suspension of disbelief. The second reason relates to the books themselves. Paul Atreides isn't the hero of the story, his son will be, and its arguable if what his son does is heroic, but he does sacrifice himself for a great and terrible purpose. You see, Paul Atreides gets to see the future. He sees "the golden path" and when he sees what he must do to achieve it, he can't bring himself to commit such an act. (The golden path will make whoever walks it a living God, controlling all time and space and knowing all things. All of humanity will become a slave to their will, and those that walk the path know that they're destroying all free will and all ambition for a greater purpose: to psychically scar humanity so deeply that all they will wish is for freedom for all time. The Golden Path is to do the most horrible thing imaginable for the greatest reason you could, and do all of this knowing just how hated you will be and what it will cost you personally. The golden path is going to teach humanity how horrible their desire for a God really is, and that anything else is better than that foolish desire to know the will of such a being and then embody it because you have no other choice.) In the first book we get to experience his youthful foolishness and brash anger, and toward the end the actor has to show us how terrified Paul is becoming of what he's unleashing on the universe, but because he sees the future, he knows he can't stop. He must show a brave face while the fear of the truth breaks him. Think about how an actor shows us that, and then realize that he's going to be a shell of a person in the next book, so we're basically throwing his role out from that point forward. All of this is easy to show us in a novel, but on a screen? The actor has to be top notch. Even worse? The first movie is basically a prologue to the actual story, but it needs to be done so well that people want to experience what comes next. All of this can't be done by one actor, but it does require some great work on an actor's part to launch an entire franchise of this sort, and then manage to hand it all off to the actual actor that will carry the franchise in the next movie without overshadowing everything.

For the record, growing up, he was my favourite movie star, but then i made a complete u-turn on him, after finding out about the level of his ego and arrogance. You are spot-on, that he always wants to be the main man. Think about the premise of the majority of his roles. He's a "handsome playboy, more often a rich trust-fund kid, a player type, that has ALL the ladies in love with him"🙄. Did you know that he was earmarked and was the 1st choice to play Neo, in the Matrix? But after meeting with the Wachowski's, he apparently demanded that Neo should be like so.....A rich playboy, who has multiple women fawning over him.....they told him to take a hike!😂.

Who's overrated? All of them... They are all STARS! Movie Actors have to be both actor & star. What's an actor with out a stage? But calling them "Stars" is like calling them saints, and saints they are NOT! I like to think Tashiro Mifune is the greatest Actor/Star, as he is a chameleon, who is always still recognizable, despite his dynamic characterization. He can play a short young man, a tall young man, an old man (I Live In Fear), a John Wayne hero or a slick Cary Grant type... Mifune is rightly celebrated as a great artist, but most people do not know his name, so is he a star? MAYBE MIFUNE IS OVERRATED!!!! I love Barbara Stenwick for the roles she plays, but that's the part, not Stenwick... Stenwick was an ok actress. They always give her parts that are like a soliloquy: The writers always give her over the top statements to the audience. I think Helena Bonham Carter is a great actress, but I always forget her name, so she can't be called a star... IMHO

If you don't like somebody, then gee, a whole mass of people out there MUST be overrating him. That is a hubris-boosting mechanism right there, guys. Just say you like or don't like certain actors and why, then move on. You gotta have the right mindset to do film criticism. You are reviewing movies, not the thoughts of other movie watchers, which you have no way of knowing anyway unless you can read minds.

I loved Bill Murray b4 he became a cult (before Rushmore). But if any actor deserves to be a cult, it's him.

I still think that Adam Sandler should have got Oscar nomination from Uncut Gems. Loved that movie. Great video Maggie and take care and stay safe 👍.

Not a fan of Audrey Hepburn. I certainly enjoyed some of the films she was in but I’ve always felt she would have been replaceable. Her awful cockney accent in My Fair Lady was every bit as bad as Dick Van Dyke in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The love affair was unbelievable as well - a marriage of convenience at best. Hepburn just didn’t have the acting chops compared to, as you say, Barbara Stanwych. Watch Double Indemnity and then a Hepburn bubblegum performance and it’s clear as day.

I don't like Bill Murray, as a person. He seems like a creep. Everyone he works with seems to hate him. He almost assaulted Richard Dreyfuss, insulted Lucy Liu, Also there's a video of him getting weirdly handsy with Geena Davis on the Arsenio Hall show. It made everyone in the room super uncomfortable.

I think chalamet is "overrated" and "underrated" actor at the same time beacause of his look. He is beautiful and it is not acceptible artistic feature for a male actor. beside that he is too young to judge .i think he is lead actor in less than 5 movies. but i think overall he did a good job especially in cmbyn , beautiful boy and king.

Bill Murry, Audrey Hepburn? The thin selection cut out of the many celebrated bad actors awarded praise and millions, this list imo is misguided and the critique is milquetoast.

@@acouelfoly Don't forget her genre defining role in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Meryl Streep is the name I immediately thought of when I saw the title of this video. I am sure she is amazing, but not the GOAT. How can she have more nominations than a Katherine Hepburn, but of course she has better roles than Hepburn had. They didn't make a Kramer vs Kramer in Hepburn's era, but still I am tired of hearing about Streep.
