Even before you started, I knew what #'s 1 and 2 would be; I still do use both for my VO projects and yes, Audacity is an excellent way to start out, the BEST way to learn this art of VO recording- Plus, very detailed (yet a bit overwhelming) tutorials!

I am a little surprised that Reaper didn't make the list - maybe it seems intimidating at first, but Booth Junkie's tutorials and free course on setting up Reaper for VO smooth the path, and I can't imagine using anything else. Twisted Wave is also popular among Mac users.

Very surprised indeed! I guess I should have voted :) Reaper is used by many pro's, has all the benefits the others have, and more. (It is capable of more as any other DAW as you can change about any function). And it's only 60 euros. Not monthly, not yearly, but for a one-time purchase with free updates for a couple of years. I use it for composing film music too.

as far as i’m aware, adobe still has a monopoly on top level production of next to everything (source: everyone), so i don’t believe reaper would be more capable, but better value? probably.

Very surprised not to see Reaper. It's a fantastic piece of software at a reasonable price. Yes it's geared towards music, but as others have pointed out if you take the free course that Booth Junkie (big thanks M.D.) has available you can customize it so that it works incredibly well for VO. It comes with great plug-ins and has most if not all the features of the more expensive DAWs.

I use Logic Pro with iZotope plugins. I started with GarageBand, and once I realized there is no way to export as mono in GarageBand, I switched to Logic. I also tried Adobe Audition, because I ran into an issue with Logic, and people raved about Audition….but I HATED it. 😂 Thankfully I fixed the Logic issue, so I’m back to using that. To each their own! ☺️

I feel you, I think Audition is the hardest one to understand. The plugin 'rack' and the multitrack vs single track editing took me a while to wrap my brain around. I feel like the design is very different from what other DAWs do. Are you liking Logic? I feel like it's probably outstanding for VO. -Randy

@@voices Yes! I really did not like the multi vs single track editing in Audition. That drove me bonkers. And yes, I love Logic. It feels very intuitive (but then, most Apple software does to me), and I love that my edits aren’t destructive. And the ability to use iZotope plugins is awesome! And I can turn them on or off and bounce whatever a client wants. I also like that Logic was a single time purchase (with free upgrades!) and I don’t have to keep paying for it. The funny thing is, I’m tech savvy, and someone who picks up new software quickly, which is why I was rather surprised when I hated Audition so much. I can usually adapt well. Maybe I’m just too set in my ways for VO. 😂

It's Justin! Yeah, they've built the tool for the job, which is really nice. I find the UI a little confusing coming from ProTools myself. If I wasn't so familiar with Premiere Pro, I think I'd be even more lost in Audition. That said, the built-in tools are next level. Spectral editor for the win! -Randy

Nice video. I really wanted to get into voiceovers but signs are kind of pointing to a dying industry. Wages going down while cost of living is going up. I have a free Voices account but hesitate to get a paid version with a low chance of income. I already have a good sound treated recording room, good mic, interface, watched many of your videos and others. I'm just not getting the feeling it's a booming growing field. I'm a confident and optimistic person too. If you have some industry stats or knowledge that says otherwise I'd be interested to know. Thanks for the video.

I totally respect that position. Well I would agree that there can be a 'race to the bottom' on other platforms, we have minimum budget guidelines based job types that help maintain a fair marketplace. It means that people who are looking for a $30 voice over will go elsewhere, but we're okay with that tradeoff. We want to bring great paying jobs that are sustainable for our talent, and worth their time. In terms of the size of the industry, Voices has been growing year over year. Online content is only growing, and we're anticipating the need for authentic, human voices to continue to grow. I hope this helps give you some insight. I'd recommend checking out our annual trends report on LinkedIn. It has some of the numbers if you're into that! -Randy

@@voices I agree with you Jay. I have been a premium member for 6 months and have not booked one gig on Voices. So far $375 down the drain. I have a professional set up, but just absolutely cannot get anything going, not even a response or feedback from any company I have submitted an audtion. Got shortlisted on 2 auditions, but nothing. Not a word. Hard to stay positive, and Voices customer service gives you absolutely nothing but scripted responses and directions to "how to videos." I'd say there are about a 4-5 new auditions posted per day mon-friday, but not all are a fit. And you'll see 20-30 people submit auditions just within the first hour. So far I've had 67% of my auditions "listened to." It's hard to stay positive knowing Voices get's 20% plus the yearly buy in, and it's like playing the Lotto. I wasn't expecting a huge first year, but I also was not expecting a vast desert. Not sure if it's the economy overall, all the points you make, a combo of all. I'm just one person but so far my experience with Voices has been pretty awful.

Outside of the very talented, established and lucky there's a reason a lot of voa's have youtube channels, offer coaching, DAW training, studio consultation or even have day jobs. It's not an easy industry to break into or make a living from. When I think of the whole "it takes money to make money" I think of my musician friend. He has a home studio, has worked with a legendary hip hop group yet he's still a barber by day. I mean playing at Sydney Opera House is a pretty big deal but he never gave up. That's the difference. Most people give up when it gets hard but my friend and the guys I mentioned in the beginning did not.

@@deltahomicide9300 Not giving up is nice and all, but doesn't mean too much. Many never give up and never make real money in the "arts." It's just therapy. The business side of a company like Voices is becoming increasingly more shady looking after 6 months in my view. They effectively act as agents or middlemen that take 20% of all gigs. That should be plenty, but to charge a substantial buy in from the small guy (talent) just to get access and not get any real benefit or service from that payment, is what all the shady talent agencies in the industry do. It's very weird to me how this is just accepted in voiceover like a rite of passage. @voices feel free to correct me on anything

@@Ellsworth_Musiq I won't deny that the playing field is more uneven now. However I struggle to think of one working artist friend who didn't go through years of struggle (and I'm talking way over 10) to make a living at it. As far as vo I'll get real specific and say I've been at it 3 years. I don't like to talk money but suffice it to say I'm in the hole. What I've made barely covers the cost of my mic. I'm working though. Training even KZitem commenting grew my network, and this industry is full of helpful people. That's unusual in the creative fields boy lemme tell ya. Try going offline to get jobs. Show your personality and make friends. Otherwise you're just another name audition and demo - which gets homogenized on the interwebs.

These are audio recording softwares, so yes none of these will show video. Alternatively, you can watch your videos on another window while recording audio in one of these softwares. There are also video editing softwares that allow you to record audio within the program. That's probably the best option for what you're looking for.

I'm struggling to find content on audio recording for just recording KZitem videos. It seems so simple, probably too simple and I'm making it more complicated than it needs to be. Is there anything different? Filming on my iPhone and with Yeti plugged into my MacBook. But every audio related video is about music, voice overs or streaming. I need something for KZitem video creation including video podcasts. Do I just record in audition and add to premiere with my iPhone footage later? Isn't there a smart way to combine it all?
@voices
10 ай бұрын
Yup, that's exactly what you can do. You can also plug in the microphone into your phone and record that way. Doing this will automatically sync the audio and video, then you can just edit later. Another way is to ditch audacity and record your voice over directly inside Premiere!

Might be a hot take but... we think Adobe Audition (for editing Voice). It is super intuitive, especially if you're familiar with any other Adobe products. No destructive editing, like Audacity, and you can learn how to truly process voice recording. GarageBand is also easy to use but is more focused on music processing. So depending on what you're working on, you can definitely pick and choose.
