I'm quite surprised how many of them survived the war, given the huge attrition rate on U-boats in the latter half.

I assume many of them where promoted to commander positions or training advisors in order to not lose their expertise. Willenbrock for example became commander of a U-Boat Flotille in Brest and later the commander of the „Fortress“ of Brest and after breakout from Brest a commander of a U-Boat Flotille in Norway. He is portrayed in the famous movie and TV-Mini-Series of the 80s „Das Boot“, he was commanding U96.

If any of you wonder, why so many of the commanders survived the war while 75% of all U-Boat-Men died, the answer is simple. It was an order of Doenitz (after he talked with Hitler about it) that his most experienced/successful Commanders has to take Positions on Land to keep their Knowledge and Experience for the following Commanders/U-boat-men. That saved many of them while their former boats and men died during the war.

My uncle, Canadian Naval Officer and graduate of the Radio College in Ontario survived the war ....on loan to Norwegian tankers carrying oil and AvGas (Trieste and the north sea) He passed in 2005. Sent his Bonds and pay checks home to grandmother as he didn't expect to survive the U-Boats. They were in the St Lawrence when he'd sneak down to Newport News and load up on special loads, before the US even entered the war!

The german navy was the least controlled by the ideology out of the three... Quite ironic
@esajuhanirintamaki965
Ай бұрын
@@besthuskydog7330 No, it was not so ironic. Decisive reason was, that Hitler did not understand naval affairs, not at all. Onkel Adi was just a lance-corporal (Gefreiter), who crawled in Flanders muddy trenches. When he read Giulio Douhets book from air war, he got his insane idea of Blitz-bombers (Me 262 tragedy!). So, he didn't even consider Navy as an effective war-machinery. Stared just giant battle cruisers (with an hard-on). "How a lovely Panzer, in architechtual character and how tasteful gun barrel this 88 mm has." He said once when some new warmachines introduced to him.
