After watching this Q&A, I have a lot more respect for surgeons now! Bleeding so much that you can hear it?? I can't even imagine that. I will probably freak out so much! How do you stay up for 24 hours? That is crazy! What if you are called into the operating room towards the end of your 24-hour shift?😱 Also, love the philosophical answer for how to fit our interests into our lives. Yes, we will never "have" time for things we are passionate about, we just have to make time! Don't delay and start now :)

Hi David, I am a fourth year student who will be starting my general surgery residency this July. I was wondering about your experience as you transitioned from a student to a resident. One thing I have noticed at my home institution as a student, is that people don't seem to trust me as much in the O.R. simply because I am a student and they don't know me, which is understandable. But I feel like i have struggled more lately as I am getting ready to transition to being a resident and lost some confidence in my own abilities. People seem to treat me like I am a brand new third year student sometimes despite the fact that I am a fourth year getting ready to graduate and going into surgery. I have sutured and assisted plenty of times throughout the last year, but despite that fact, it has felt like people don't always put much confidence in me because I am still a student. Does it get better as a resident? Did you feel like you fit in with the people in your residency better than with the residents you worked with as a student? I think I am getting in my head a little bit and just fearful that I won' t be a good resident because of some of my experiences as a student.

Hey James, congratulations on the new adventure you're about to be starting! I can completely relate and remember some of the feelings you are describing, and in short, yes - I do think you are getting in your head a bit here. It is always hard for a med student, even when advanced, to get universal recognition and trust from EVERYONE on a team, because there will always be folks who don't know that you're an already-matched, destined-for-surgery, med student. To some people you're still a stranger and a student, and they may lump you in with more beginner-level students. In full candor, there is a bit of this early on in residency, especially when you're an intern and are on the wards a bit more than you're in the OR, but you'll very quickly start to reach the point in your training where you sort of know everyone in the OR - the nurses, the techs, the anesthesia folks, and you'll start being treated (and feeling) like a colleague. So my best advice is to let it roll off your shoulders and not take it personally when you feel someone isn't giving you the trust you've earned, and recognize that it will be coming very soon. Hope this helps a bit - and grateful to have you as a subscriber!

I have my first aid training over here in Australia and tourniquet are generally considered specialised medical devices only used in specific circumstances like a cut artery or venomous snake bite, generally any bleed other then an artery should be absolutely fine with direct pressure

The dedication & pressure that I saw Interns & Residents was amazing. Seeing that intern work in the wee hours of the morning assessing & treating the patient at their most vulnerable moment- with little sleep-will always stay in my mind. I can still see the Resident in the dim lit nurses station writing his notes after seeing the patient. He went onto be an amazing Colorectal Surgeon & I did the instruments for Inferior Colorectal Resection. Although the patient had Superior & Inferior open Colorectal Resection.🇦🇺

Hi, a second year medical student from The Czech Republic here. I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your videos. You give off this super chill vibe even when discussing serious topic which makes me less scared of the surgical field. I do love to work with my hands but the amount of responsibility can be overwhelming sometimes.

Hello, amazing video by the way!!! I am a non traditional student getting ready to start a year long masters program. I just turned 32 and plan on applying to medical school once I am finished with this program. In a perfect world I will be 34 starting medical school given the year long application process and such but I would really love to do surgery. Through shadowing surgeons and working in an anatomy lab and doing autopsies I know I love to work with my hands! In your opinion do you believe there is a certain point where a person is to old to pursue a surgical speciality? Iv heard so many answers but I’m just curious what your take on it is.

Hi Jordan, thanks so much for the kind words! Honestly I don’t think there’s a certain point here that would apply across the board. It really comes down to what you want - both in your medical career, and in the rest of your life - and how this would impact that. You know?

Hello Dr. Hindin, I recently flipped through Zollinger's and Schwartz's (operating texts), both of which seem quite dense. What strategies do you use to absorb the information in these texts? How did you study during residency given its arduous nature? Thanks and I enjoy your videos.
