For me its the sound of England crashing out of the 2002 world cup after BBC used it. m.kzitem.info/news/bejne/y5eQp55th4ype6A They always seem to pick the perfect song for that, another one is Green Day’s Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life)” that evokes the same memory for me and will forever associate with huge footballing disappointment in that moment

At the 2002 world cup. The England v Brazil game was broadcast on both the BBC & ITV television channel. Both channels had a bidding war to play this song after the game if England lost. England lost. I think ITV won. I can't remember, I was drunk in a pub at around 10am. The tournament was in Japan & korea so the time difference meant the games were at like 7.30 in the morning. Good times

As I recall, the germ of an idea that created the song was that Noel had a friend who was going through a messy divorce with the house, the dog, the kids and so forth. He'd come up to the house, sit at the kitchen table and just sob about it. That's where the "take what you need and be one your way and stop crying your heart out" part came from.

Little fun fact (not so fun if you’re English and old enough to remember) This song came out around the time England lost in the football World Cup to Brazil in 2002. And this song was on every compilation.. which Noel later said made him a killing although he would rather it didn’t! Haha
